The first time I read this I can remember quite loving the series. That was something like 10+ years ago.
My 2nd read through... well. My first warning should have been, ".... I think I really liked this book but for the life of me I can't remember a single thing about it. Hmm. Odd. You'd think I'd remember something...". After finishing it... Either I've gotten more picky as time goes on - I mean there were literally parts of the book I skimmed through by saying, "Bla bla bla" to the end! - or the book is just that forgettable.
Essentially you have a half-human man-child trying to come into his own non-human abilities who is a pawn by some would be daemon-conjurers. All the characters except the villain are beautiful in all ways. Main character turns out to be a Gary Stu near the end. Thinks he's quite helpless at the beginning but at the end, oh no! He's turning into the most powerful being in the universe!! .
Other fun tropes: Overly used adverbs! The author went from being excruciatingly detailed in that, "And the wind blew by, lightly ruffling his short chestnut hair, bore the faint hint of strawberries and dew" kind of way, only to turn around and give little to no details elsewhere.
Introduces likeable character that gets your interest just enough to kill them horribly. That was a fun one. A literal, "I kind of like this guy, he's kind of interesting. Pity he has an unfortunate issue with that mocking of cab drivers... I can't tell if that's supposed to be a cultural twang he's using or if he's mimicing Jar Jar Binks and... Oh. I guess I'll never know. He's dead. Well then."
Tldr; Book is utterly forgettable, has some good parts, lots of bad parts, over-used tropes, hard to read in areas. I own both it and the sequel. I'm a bit torn on if I'll re-read the sequel and then ditch them or just... purge the author as being not worth the shelf-space.
