I decided to read "Teaching Writing Skills" because I found myself struggling with teaching writing skills during my practicum in a high school. Personally, I find writing skills the most challenging skills to teach, especially in the context of a 45-minute lesson.
There are 3 things I like and don't like about the book. * Things I like about the book: - It offers me more objective perspectives towards writing skills. Although writing and speaking skills are both productive skills, teachers should not deal with writing skills the same way as teaching speaking skills due to the complexity of coherence and cohesion features. - It provides me with various activities and their examples, ranging from warm-up to practice ones. I can't wait to utilize them in my lesson one day. - It mentions the approach of teaching writing skills for students who are not familiar with the Latin alphabet, which really stirs up my curiosity. * Bonus: The most useful thing I've learned in this book is how to correct students' works. There are various types of error correction that can reduce teachers' burden as well as facilitate students' autonomy of learning.
* Things I do not like about the book: - In the effort to cover all aspects of writing skills, it can just cover basic knowledge of teaching writing skills. Some examples are provided without aiming for specific groups of students, which puzzles me about how to use them. - It was published the first time in 1988, so if you want to catch up with up-to-date knowledge in the field of English language teaching, you can consider other books or articles. - The activities introduced in this book are not really suitable for teachers who want to know about teaching formal writing skills.
