I found it difficult to follow in places but basically the author discovers her father was forced to leave Germany because he was Jewish according to the nazi race policies (despite having converted).

Her mother made a similar discovery about her own father (the authors grandfather)

The family had to escape to Shanghai and the story is told through the letters that had been kept

Some interesting background on Shanghai at this time
