Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Hesperides Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
As I continue my reading adventures with European royalty, that for the moment revolves around the Tudors and right now Queen Elizabeth, I stumble upon this book. Edward Spencer Beesly is a product of his time and far from an impartial observer of history and his opinions and judgement crashes through the pages like a chauvinistic bull in a china shop. But when I decided to try to ignore his personal opinions and focus on what he was hoping to share about Elizabeth and her time of reign, I found some interesting tidbits and new views on events that had been previously otherwise angled. His portrait is highly focussed on the religious turnings and impacts but is in no way deep enough for anyone but an introductory reader. I would recommend it less that other beginner books about Elizabeth, and only if male chauvinism doesn't make you boil hot with rage.
