THE DOMINANT SPECIES? The Hellions can barely keep from killing one another, let alone find a way to fit into Krakoan society. Of course, that might be just what Mister Sinister is counting on when he sends them to clean up his messes.

I would like to think Sinister took the name "Hellions" for his latest crew because Emma and Kate took "Marauders" for their Hellfire Trading activities. That said, the name is apt, for this is a rowdy group of troublemakers.

Read as part of the
Hellions, Vol. 1
graphic novel. (July 20, 2025)

The collective review for the entire
Hellions, Vol. 1
storyline can be found on my review of the Hellions, Vol. 1 trade paperback.

This is by far my favorite X-Men series now.

I mean I was laughing so much at some parts. Getting to see these misfits work together is wonderful. Zeb Wells knows how to let jokes just slide out and hit. Plenty of great moments, including one of nana trying to take care of a member, someone getting shot in the head, and a vicious attack from the original Marauders! I'm LOVING this series.

So the “Hellions” first mission to destroy Sinisters old cloning lab. Once they get inside, all hell breaks loose. Nice issue.

This issue had one surprise after another, and a lot of humor amidst the bloodshed. Wells definitely has the right tone for the book.

After the Asian-stereotyping travesty that was Fallen Angels, I like what they're doing with Psylocke / Kwannon here.

HAHAHAHA Empath didn't even make it to the mission. Maybe being on this team will teach him some manners. ...or dare I say it? empathy. lol
I have questions about the clones. Particularly Madelyne Pryor. She's a clone of Jean. Sinister made her. So for The Five protocols how does that work? She's a mutant and her own entity but... she's a warped clone of Jean. Evil. And her gang of Marauder zombies were just talking about EATING Orphan Maker and Nanny. ...I thought Nanny was a robot. I guess I'll be looking that up here in a minute. *update* Nanny is a cyborg and apparently not a sane one. She rescued Orphan Maker (who is also not sane) from Sinister. So the plot of this issue is a bunch of people traumatized by Sinister were sent to his clone farm, where that trauma took place, to demolish it as "therapy". (not how therapy works)
Glad that Psylocke got another chance as a lead character after Fallen Angels. But from the look of things Wildchild is the leader now. And not the same dude as the "clown Wolverine" from the past couple New Mutants issues. That was Wildside. Was there a fire sale on crappy Wolverine knock-offs?

Highly entertaining and tinged in darkness, these issues are like an old X-Force issue and that’s a compliment

I'm loving this series! It got off to a strong start and that continues here, and I really enjoy the team dynamic...by which I mean that this team is a disaster and they. quite literally, kill each other at the first opportunity. I'm wondering if Empath being shot in the head by a team mate is going to become a running joke (really couldn't happen to a nicer bloke).

I love how Alex/Havok feels like he doesn't belong with this bunch of crazies, and even says so himself...but it only takes the appearance of Madelyne Pryor to prove how wrong he is. Given everything he's been through, Alex has issues, and it's good to see a writer finally acknowledging that.

It feels like anything goes in this book and Zeb Wells strikes the right balance between darkly humorous and just plain dark. I mean, any book with the egg shaped Nanny as a team member can't possibly take itself too seriously.

This does feel like a book for long time X-fans, but being a long time X-fan myself I'm hardly going to complain about that.

Some decent moments such as Wildchild with the dog handler and Greycrow capping Empath but the fact remains this is a primarily a bunch of Z Listers with Psylocke and Havok tagged on.

I'm sure you could have picked a load of better villains with troubled pasts to make this more engaging. Particularly irritating is nana in a box and robot child (I have no idea what their names are) I mean just what is the point?

I like the Hellions idea but I'm thinking that without a roster shake up at some point in the non too distant future it will sink.

Fight at the end was decent but not enough to make me care.

Looking back, I don’t know why they even released Fallen Angels when you had something on the back burner that’s already surpassed it in every form imaginable in only two issues. This is the proper series for Psylocke, and it’s off to a damn strong start.

What are you trying to do here with this team, Marvel? They're supposed to be the problem kids of the X-universe, but they're far too small a class for all the psychotic mutants we have come across over the years. And while I understand including Havok so that readers have *some* classic good superhero to look to and root for, he really doesn't belong with this group. Like, at all. His worst sin is that he used to get possessed and/or mind-controlled a lot.

Some nice older X-villains make an appearance here. We already knew from previews that Madelyne Pryor would show up, so that's not really a spoiler. I enjoy how she points out that she came back years ago, "And nobody cared." Because her resurrection was so convoluted and confused after Changing Writers Syndrome took place in the pages of X-Man. At first she came back as a psychic ghost that X-Man manifested. Then it was declared that this origin was a lie, and she was actually an alternate reality version of Jean Grey, "Queen Jean" who came to invade. Then that explanation got kind of lost, and Madelyne Pryor showed up years ago with a bunch of female villains to rob Betsy Braddock's grave.

... No one referred to her as this alternate reality "Queen Jean," and no explanation was provided for how Madelyne came back from the dead if this were, in fact, meant to be Madelyne. Basically, if you were an actual long-term X-Men fan who just read the comics as they came out, there was no way this was ever going to make sense, because the writers made no attempt to reconcile the different explanations.

So, she's back. Some version of her.

Wells is doing a good job of balancing the tension on the team - like Wild Child not accepting Psylocke as a strong enough leader, Empath being enough of a sociopath that he's been threatened with death if he uses his powers on anyone in the group, and on and on - and tension between the team and broader world. Not everyone is convinced the team is a good idea, and even Havok voices concerns despite being ordered to be on the team (or, I'm assuming, being put in the Pit or expelled from Krakoa), and the humans sent to meet them on their first mission. One police officer brings a dog that he has bring to heel, and Wild Child, the most feral member of the team, sees this as an opportunity to fight for dominance.

Which is going to be, I suspect, a long term problem for Psylocke; she will have to bring Wild Child to hell or risk losing her life - as that is how I think he believes he can become alpha on this team.

Once again, the art is clean, crisp, and atmospheric. Just an absolute joy to read.

"Do you know that you are unloved? Do you know that you are despised? For surely those who sent you...

Knew what I would do to you."

Thoughts >>

Perhaps the most dysfunctional "team" that I've ever witnessed, and I'm all about it.

Great cliffhanger ending.

Don't introduce your dog to Wildchild.

I wanted more.

Empath is so sadistic and twisted not sure he will last long at all. Psylocke is a good lead but their first big bad is Zombies and Madeleyne Prior they're fxukd
