First of all I want to say that I have a VERY divided opinion about the book. Really. It's been a long time since any book gave me that.
I found the main plot of the book in the exploration of the limits of the feminist critique to sex /relationships. Specially the very difference between "intimacy" or "touching" vs "sex" and "relationships." Many sections of the book touched me deeply, very very deeply. And in many ways, many sections of the book touch limits so deep that you need to start to think, REALLY and DEEPLY think.
The divisions starts with the politics of the book. Is individualistic until its last consequence, and shows the class-privilege of basically all the characters (all high-middle class to upper class lesbians who seems to only relate with other similar women). It's racist, because racism is show as a kind of "external problem" aand the women of color portrayed are just caricatures: a "mystic" native american, and an apparently "never affected by racism" black lesbian. Although she shows herself as a woman very concerned about ending hierarchies, Sonia is very dictatorial (but she and Jase do not seem to notice) and she tend to present herself as a kind of "ultimate word" leader (but again, she does not seem to see it that way).

I really really love the book in a lot of ways... in others, I recommend to read Bev Jo's critique of the book:

One of the most thought-provoking novels I have ever read. I will be thinking on this book for quite some time and have passed it on to my teenage daughter.
