I found “Limbic System” to be a very interesting and highly informative book. Examples are provided in the book concerning which portions of the limbic system impact various mental and emotional functions.
I found the references to substantial sex differences in regard to structures in the limbic system and how the differences impact each sex in special ways to be very interesting. Feminists might not like the book very much, because it pulls no punches about the considerable differences (in biology) between the sexes, such that psychological differences inevitably occur.
My reason for reading this book is principally practical rather than theoretical. After all, it is clear to me that my amygdala is in need of improvement. Maybe other limbic structures and even the prefrontal cortex are also implicated in my nervous disorders. This book helped me to realize that a malfunctioning limbic system can play havoc with a person’s mental functioning. How to correct the malfunctions (that occurred in childhood due to emotional abuse) is considerably more problematic. But I’m working on that.
I’ve read considerably about the amygdala, but the book under review offers me the most informative and relevant discussions of the amygdala and other limbic structures that I’ve encountered yet. I highly recommend this book. I give it high marks.
