“Prelude to Spanish Modernism: Fortuny to Picasso” is a beautiful catalog covering the exhibition by the same name at The Meadows Museum in 2015. An impressive coffee table piece, this book is very large, allowing the reader to enjoy the high-quality images of the art it contains. The catalog is thoughtfully designed, as well, with insightful essays by experts and commentaries by the museum director, Dr. Roglán, a well-regarded scholar in Spanish art.
I was particularly excited to read this book not only for my own research, but because it is bilingual. It made perfect sense to me to read about Spanish artists in Spanish. I learned a lot about the artists represented, their work in Spain and abroad, as well as their influences and relationships to one another during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. More importantly, the exhibition catalog, “Prelude to Spanish Modernism: Fortuny to Picasso”, is a significant visual record that helps the reader understand how these Spanish artists changed and helped chart the trajectory of Modernism moving forward in the twentieth century. This is a wonderful book to display and reference for anyone who loves Spanish art.
