Mi infancia al fin en España.

Gracias Arechi por publicarlos de verdad.

Shojo publicado en 2002 y con un anime en 2003- 2004. El anime llegó a España en 2008 y fue un ✨éxito✨
Ahora, veinte años después de su publicación, al fin llega su esperada traducción en español.

Nos encontramos con la historia de Luchia Nanami, la cual debe encontrar a las otras 6 princesas sirenas y sus perlas mágicas e invocar a la reina de los mares pues un peligro acecha en ellos.

Lo malo es que ella misma perdió su perla hace años tras dársela a un niño que casi murió ahogado y del cual se enamoró (retelling de la sirenita, sí).

Cuando tenía 10 años, me enamoré de ese anime de una manera que no puedo describir. Estoy muy contenta de que al fin hayan traducido de la historia y está disponible en España.

Este primer tomo es rápido y ligero, con la historia teniendo toques más oscuros que el anime. Me gustan los cambios que he encontrado, ¡y estoy deseando tener el segundo en mis manos!

Luchia es la princesa de la perla rosa, y ha venido al mundo de los humanos en busca de la perla que le entregó a su primer amor, un chico al que salvó de ahogarse. Una vez en la tierra, se topará con un joven surfero llamado Kaito y todo cambiará, por no hablar de los peligros que surgirán a cada paso, para intentar hacerse con las perlas de las princesas...

Con los mangas, siempre intento dosificarlos al máximo y leer únicamente un capítulo al día, porque si no siento que los termino demasiado pronto, pero he de admitir que en esta ocasión me ha sido imposible de tan enganchadísima y emocionada que estaba al leerlo.

Los diálogos son divertidos, el tira y afloja que se traen Kaito y Luchia me da la vida... aunque admito que se me ha hecho muy corto, y que me habría encantado encontrar algo más de desarrollo, sobre todo en la parte en la que luchan contra las villanas: aunque en el anime se ve perfectamente cómo cantan, se esfuerzan o sufren para acabar con las fuerzas del mal, en el manga no se ve nada de eso, simplemente se transforman, se entiende que van a cantar, y ya está: han ganado sin ningún tipo de problema, así que queda algo extraño.

Review for complete series

Mermaid Melody is probably one of the more internationally successful magical girl manga series out there and I apologise to all its fans: I think it's a dreadful manga. That being said, I'd like to stress that this is strictly referring to the manga rather than its anime adaptation. While I have not seen the anime, I can well imagine that it has smoothed out some of the bigger issues I have with this series and it's certainly not the premise that is bad. But before I get into details, I have to ask: who on earth thought Wet and Wonderful is a good marketing slogan for this?

Magical girl series are a little unrealistic and formulaic by nature - one needs to let go of some disbelief. But there are nonetheless many great series out there that own this genre; classics such as Sailor Moon and more recent ones that give it a bit of a modern spin like Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Between the classics and the new, there seems to be this niche of series that didn't manage to add anything new and thus didn't age well. Mermaid Melody helps itself to everything known in the magical genre and somehow manages to amplify everything in the worst way possible.

As a premise, we have mermaids that can quite conveniently take on the shape of humans. Their kingdoms are being attacked and they have to band together to eventually defeat whoever is causing all the havoc. We start off with Lucia, naturally, she is the pink mermaid. It is beyond me why she lives in Japan in human disguise, attends school and runs a bathing house. Let's call it plot convenience. Other mermaids pop up one by one to join the ranks and they're all spending a jolly good time as humans. Even when they are underwater, they seem to spend more time in human form than their true mermaid one.

Villains pop turn up in every other chapter, one more ridiculous than the other. Their ultra-evil plan is silly at best and easily thwarted: the mermaids win by singing songs. These action sequences, if they can be called such, consist of a page or two where the mermaids say a cheesy line about love conquers all and we're to assume their magical singing has saved the day. To stay true to the magical girl pattern: Lucia falls crazy in love with the first guy she sees and must keep her true identity a secret. But fear not, the young man has plenty of secrets of his own, the villains are actually sympathetic and love and friendship save the day.

None of this is new, and none of this is in and of itself bad. The problem lies within the execution and that already starts off with absolutely horrible pacing. It takes as little as 15 pages for the story to cover the prequel, the basic premise, the introduction of the main characters, the meeting of the love interest, their first argument and events just trip over each other left and right. The scenes jump around like crazy which makes every single interaction and reaction of the characters wholly unbelievable. It was hard to feel anything for this story that was just moving around at a crazy speed resulting in undying emotions that I fail to grasp. This isn't even what I would call insta love, there is zero build-up in any of the romances or friendships, everything just happens. Characters are conveniently always at the right place and time.

One of my biggest issue with this series is the stark over-sexualisation. Magical girls are typically very young - Lucia is only thirteen years old but looks a good deal older physically. It's not unusual that they are made to look more mature, I also never thought that Sailor Moon looked like fourteen, but it's the treatment of it here that I find rather appalling. There are countless sexual allusions and so many panels where for whatever ridiculous reason Lucia's clothes come undone and she's naked in front of a crowd. Her love interest is constantly making remarks and giving hints. The mermaids themselves keep talking about being or looking sexy. I just kept shaking my head thinking these girls are hardly even teenagers! The worst part was the soda drink, though. I can't decide whether it was idiotic or lazy writing - maybe both? Lucia visits her love interest while he is sick. She helps herself to a can of soda and forgets that mermaids become drunk from soda. I don't even know where to start: is Lucia that stupid that she'd forget it? It's like saying a thirteen-year-old would forget beer is alcohol. But the concept itself is what really gets me: it's so absurd, I think I prefer vampires that sparkle in the sun. And of course, this was only a means to an end to get Lucia to jump into bed with the guy and press herself against him - breasts-and-all. This scene was not sexy, it was absurd and given their age rather disturbing.

I also took a lot of issues with the art. Don't get me wrong, the art is actually pretty cute. If you like shoujo style with big googly eyes, this might be for you. I love shoujo style so I'm certainly not put off by the style overall, strictly speaking, this is just my cup of tea. But I'd have to say that the artist was extremely lazy. There are plenty of panels and artworks that show that she can draw very nicely. But more often than not, the proportions are bizarre and completely out of place. I spent a good deal of time wincing at the weird angles of limbs or distorted faces feeling disappointed because I knew full well that the artist could have done a lot better.

I know I had a lot more on my mind as I was reading this - I already didn't like it much a decade ago but this reread only seems to have made it worse. It is cliché upon cliché, awful pacing, characters without any depth, inappropriate sexual content given the age group and lots of content that had me speechless with its stupidity. I apologise again to those who love this series but I do not share your sentiment. It may seem surprising that I am still giving this a two-star rating. I'm probably being generous here but I do see this working rather well as an anime version and I do like the mermaid premise and there are some pretty cute designs. But goodness me, the plot needs a rewrite and either the characters need to be given some extra years on top or please save the sexual contents for an office romance or something.

This is a cute enough little manga. I like the art, and I like that the romance seems to be partly inspired by The Little Mermaid, both Disney and original versions. But the truth is that I'm not entirely engaged with the story, and if it were just about any other manga, I probably wouldn't be continuing with it. It's lighter and shallower than my tastes, and I'm not taken in by Kaito yet. But... MERMAIDS. And so I will read every volume.

¡Canto de sirena! ¡Arriba el telón!

🐚 ¿Cuántas veces escuché esas dos frases durante mi adolescencia? ¿Cuántas veces han sido el inicio incesante de un tarareo o de una canción? ¿Cuántas veces quise ser sirena en la piscina del pueblo por culpa de este anime? ¿Cuántas horas pasé buscando incansablemente imágenes y canciones mientras "robaba" la wifi del vecino desde el balcón de casa con la psp de mi hermano? Sabed, que tocar el ordenador de mi padre era algo prohibido por aquella época. Podéis entender entonces que después de esta insana obsesión por ciertas sirenas tenía que hacerme con el primer tomo del manga que después de tantos años se ha publicado en castellano. ¡Gracias Arechi por hacer un sueño juvenil realidad!

🐚 Luchia visita el mundo de los humanos junto a Hippo para recuperar su perla perdida. Sin ella no puede cantar porque:

"¡Una sirena sin perla desafina como un violín roto!"

¿Qué habrá sido de ese chico al que regalo su perla tras salvarlo de un naufragio? ¿La reconocerá? ¿Podrá encontrarse de nuevo con él?

🐚 Que nostalgia he sentido al abrir el libro. Unos minutos contemplando las primeras paginas a color no han sido suficientes. Todavía, después de haber terminado de leerlo y mientras intento escribir una opinión (nada objetiva), sigo guiando a mis ojos hacia la derecha para volver a verlas.

🐚 Una historia que comienza como una especie de "retelling de la Sirenita" mostrándonos ese amor infantil y a primera vista entre Luchia y Kaito, y que en ciertos aspectos me recuerda un poco al conocidísimo "Sailoor Moon". Un manga en el que a los malos malísimos se les vence cantando y sin violencia, algo que resulta un tanto peculiar.

🐚 Este primer tomo sirve para presentarnos a gran cantidad de personajes. Conocemos a varias princesas sirenas que deben reunirse para salvar su mundo. Y creo que este es el mayor problema del manga, la autora quiere que conozcamos a los personajes sin detenerse demasiado en ellos, con cambios bruscos de escenas que despistan al lector. No da sensación de una historia que fluye sino que parece hecha a cortes, como si de una edición de video se tratara.

🐚 El estilo de dibujo de Pink Hanamori me recuerda tanto al de Arina Tanemura, con tantos detalles por escena, tan cuidado, tan adorable y romántico que no he podido evitar sentirme fascinada. Los fondos relacionados con el mar son sencillamente asombrosos. El hecho de incluir diferentes especies de animales marinos da un toque muy dulce a la trama.

🐚 La escenas románticas están dibujadas de forma preciosa, con muy buen gusto, Pink Hanamori, logra transmitir muchas sensaciones con ellas.

🐚 Como ocurre en general con el shōjo, categoría del manga dirigida especialmente al público femenino adolescente, se recurre en demasiadas ocasiones al humor, dándole cierto toque infantil a los personajes. Esto es algo que nunca me ha gustado demasiado, odio que en los primeros tomos los protagonistas parezcan "tontos" y luego todo sea drama. O parezcan macarras cuando no lo son. Un ejemplo es que nunca me he sentido agusto con las expresiones que utiliza Kaito, el protagonista, a la hora de hablar en el anime o el manga. Resulta prepotente y arrogante. Cae mal al inicio.

🐚 Que manía... ¿Es que acaso somos más interesantes cuando no mostramos quienes somos en realidad? En fin...

Empezar a leer este manga que representa toda mi vida ha sido muy especial. Llevaba esperando este momento muchísimo tiempo y ha sido increíble. Las notas de la autora son maravillosas y en general este primer tomo me ha encantado (y ahora solo tengo ganas de verme la serie otra vez, qué remedio). Espero el segundo con ansias!

Okay so a friend recommended this to me and it's not great. The art style is less than inspired to say the least and the romance I think is going for a sweat and fresh take on mermaids but its a bit off almost unsettling. I'm not a huge manga fan so maybe it's a cultural thing. The premise is pretty interesting if not a bit hackneyed(but most stories are and recover through their storytelling) but poor execution. That being said if you're a fan of manga it might be worth a read and for a mermaid manga it might be good(emphasis on might) but personally the completionist in me made me finish it.

Hay mangas shoujo muy buenos, pero este claramente NO es uno de ellos. Vale que es para la infancia, pero eso no implica que la historia tiene que ser estúpida y sin ningún trabajo detrás, que hay obras infantiles que son obras de arte. Aquí el argumento es genérico, aburrido y avanza a base de clichés, como si la mangaka no hubiera hecho ningún esfuerzo. Y lo mismo va por el elenco y sus relaciones, más que personajes son puros tópicos sin nada de profundidad y sus relaciones se basan en amores absurdos a primera vista. Por lo que respecta al dibujo, no es espantoso, pero sí tirando a cutre y descuidado. En definitiva: no merece la pena ni para matar el rato.

en fin tan lindo tan chuli tan todo, tan bien adaptado el anime es que pffff es literalmente mi mierda, es cine 🚬


obviamente tiene cositas cuestionables propias de cuando se crea y publica pero ay nada como una dosis d kaito y lucchia para que yo sea feliz
