“Renée Harrell” is really two people. Our pen name is the semi-pseudonym of Renée and Harrell Turner, and we're a wife-and-husband writing team. Our first novel was a work-for-hire YA mystery and was written under a much more famous pseudonym. It did pretty well, too.

Under our own pseudonym, we've written a trio of e-books. "After Things Went Bad" and "Bill Shakespeare's Next Big Mistake" came out under our own Hunting Monsters Press logo, while "Wicked Games" can be purchased by the good people at Cobblestone Press.

In April, we published "Something Wicked", a young adult mystery, in both paperback and electronic editions. In September, we'll be publishing "The Atheist's Daughter", a supernatural thriller.

We're currently working on "The Preacher’s Son", our next novel in the Winterhaven series.

Great sci fi adventure

The worldbuilding is rather dark and sometimes gruesome, I liked Aly, Syr, and some of the rebel Bugs, but the body count was higher than I expected, and Bugworld was worse than I expected. The story is thrilling, and I would read a sequel.

Feisty heroine Aly Krebb takes an ill advised vacation to a bug planet. Not the Starship Trooper type bugs that try to eat you on sight, but the T'ing bugs that might eat you on sight, but only after they've considered all the options in a serious internal debate. Twice.

Make no mistake, this is a comedy romp through a bizarre world.

Although it's set on another planet, it has the feel of a fantasy novel. Technology is restricted and sentries armed with spears stand around guarding some lord's hive mound. There's a thief and his larger, shape-shifting companion. And there's a surly barkeeper in a spit-and-sawdust tavern.

Dobbin the thief and Syr the shape-changer are pure comedy gold. The scene where they first cross paths with Aly is hilarious. Funnier still are the bugs themselves, even the bit-part actors. Their roguish nature is effortlessly discerned from their speech alone. They make up for the lack of scenery descriptions. In fact, they are the scenery and they reminded me of the characters that populate Terry Pratchett's novels.

The plot is a skillfully woven set of strands that, at first, don't appear to be connected, but they soon come together in an evocative way. The strong narrative picks you up and runs with you right to the end with hardly a misstep. There's no magic involved, but it is enchanting. I cared about the characters too, even the hard-shelled ugly ones. I finished the book wondering what they would get up to next.

There's a couple of minor downsides. It's light on visuals, so I had trouble picturing some of the places and creatures. And Aly is a tad underdrawn. She's supposed to be a transporter, but I never fully got the sense of what that meant, nor why it gifted her with the skills she had. She's overshadowed by the rest of the cast.

But that's a minor grumble that didn't affect my enjoyment of the novel. I would recommend this as a fun, and funny, read.

I'm also left with the overwhelming desire to say 'chund' to someone.
