This is my new favorite book in the series, which I'm sure will come as a surprise to absolutely no one. Truly, Aimee Vance and B. Perkins have outdone themselves with this magic fake relationship romcom that has quite a lot of Little Mermaid vibes. The small coastal town of Deadlights Cove is one I desperately wish were real, more and more with each new book in this series. The residents are like friends I haven't seen in months, making me wish I could jump into the pages and give them all a hug as soon as I see their name pop up on the page. And while I am desperately introverted and love my "me" time, the atmosphere where everyone knows everything is charming and endearing. If any magical being, be they a witch, demon, angel or shifter, is looking for a human to bond with...I volunteer. Wholeheartedly, my bags are already packed, and it's just a matter of when we leave.
The last thing sea nymph Maisie expected was to be told she had to get married, and she certainly would never have thought it would be to a demon from Scotland she barely knows and hasn't seen since she was a child. Desperate to come up with a plan to escape matrimony, she comes up with a plan to join forces with a fellow supernatural, Lysander, who is a rockstar witch she has been watching from afar for a long time. Little does she know that he has been watching her too. Lys calls her Mystery Girl, and when he sees her in the crowd and has a chance to talk to her, he takes it. And while he's not immediately on board with her plan to fake date, he is convinced after his mother tells him that he, too, must marry a stranger. Telling their parents they are dating was supposed to be the hard part, but what ends up being the biggest challenge is getting comfortable with each other. The attraction is obvious and present, but Maisie has never been allowed to have a relationship out in the open before, and Lys has a hard time keeping his hands off her. Thus starts the slow burn of a romance neither expected and may tear their worlds apart as they know it.
To start with, Maisie was the quirkiest, cutest heroine I have laid eyes on in this series. I expected her to be full of herself, given that she was the heir to her father's throne, but she was shy and more comfortable wearing hoodies than heels and a crop top. Drawing attention to herself wasn't her style, which made the perfect foil to Lysander, who literally draws attention to himself for a living. As a musician and lead singer in his band, he is well known for drawing women to him, and with Maisie, he expected to receive the same attention from her. But with her insecurities and discomfort with PDA, it was a challenge for him. And honestly, that's where it all became really cute to me. They had a contract in place for their fake relationship, and whenever Lys sees Maisie get upset, he starts to invoke the nonexistent "Emotional Distress Clause." He snuggles with her, makes sure she feels secure, and the idea that they shouldn't have any physical touching outside of what is necessary flies out the window. The slow burn in this romance was delicious and well worth the long wait. Lys was the kindest soul, so gentle with Maisie and forgiving, and they were both amazing partners for each other. Truly, my favorite couple in the series, and that's saying something.
This entire series is like a warm hug for my soul. I can't get enough. If you haven't read this series, you are missing out on so much love, laughter, and all-around good times.
