When Lee Miller moves to Florida from New York City, she seeks a clean slate. Wanting to leave her dark past behind her, she attends Deerfield Academy, where she meets Annie Lapointe, Bradley Gilbert, Sawyer Weldon, and Griffin Dell. Her new friends give her a sense of normalcy as she secretly copes with the trauma within herself until a very observant Griffin starts to catch on. Will he try to find out more or remain Heartless?
Y’all I love books that contain mixed media! Heartless includes a great playlist, Yearbook signing, and a family tree. This was a nice and easy read at only 145 pages. I always love a short book in between the 400 pagers :)
I love the romance between Lee and Griffin. I loved that it had a sprinkle of spice too which is always nice. The care Griffin shows to Lee is so special. Everyone needs a Griffin <3 I really just adored the whole friend group. Annie, Sawyer and Bradley totally seem like great people to surround yourself with.
Lee is such a strong character and what she went through is heartbreaking. I love how she truly rose from the ashes like a phoenix. I can definitely tell we would be good friends.
Please be mindful of the triggers before selecting this book!! Personal preference but the chapters are extremely short at around 2-5 pages.
I recommend this book if you like

After reading J.R. Johnson’s first book, “Killers in the Shadows” last year, I already knew I would love their book “Heartless”. They have such a unique and descriptive writing style that allows you to imagine the story in your head as you’re reading. If you’re a fan of young adult novels and angsty romance books, Heartless is definitely the perfect book for you. I can’t wait for the rest of the series, I need more of Griffin and Lee ASAP!!!
This YA novel, Heartless by J.R. Johnson, was the read I needed. If it’s not your age group, consider it a palette cleanser between your adult novels. It needs a spot on your bookshelf.
Meet Lee. She’s moving to Florida from New York City for a fresh start. She needs it after the trauma she has experienced. She starts at a new school and makes friends with a great group of people, and they help give her a sense of normalcy.
Meet Griffin. He attends Deerfield Academy and has a close group of friends. They meet the new girl at school and become fast friends. He notices there is something the new girl seems to be hiding. Should he try to find out more?
Johnson’s writing style draws readers in and makes you feel like a part of the story. My favourite was the terrific cast of secondary characters who make you wish you had the same kind of friend group as when you were in high school. Johnson includes a playlist, family tree, and yearbook signing in the novel. I found excitement in the fact that this book does contain a sprinkle of spice!
A book I will be sharing with the age-appropriate mini-humans in my family, but now I have to be patient for the rest of the series! Some trigger warnings include depictions and references to suicide, death, alcohol addiction, sexual harassment, and trauma.
Thank you to J.R. Johnson for a paperback in exchange for my honest review!
