The Books of Maccabees are historical accounts of the Jewish revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BC, led by the Maccabees. The First Book of Maccabees describes the oppression of the Jews by the Seleucid king Antiochus IV and the rebellion led by Yehuda Maccabee, which ultimately resulted in the reclaiming of Jerusalem and the Temple. The Second Book of Maccabees continues the story and includes accounts of miraculous events and the martyrdom of Jews who refused to adopt Greek customs. Both books are considered important historical sources and depict the Maccabees as heroes who fought for the Torah and G-d's commandments.
