Learning Disabilities and Related Mild Disabilities

Rate this book
This text that set the standard for students working toward certification in special education has been revised and updated to meet the needs of a new generation of teachers and students. A cross-categorical emphasis makes the book suitable for a broad number of courses - including those aimed at teaching students with mild disabilities and which are part of many states' certification requirements. The text describes the characteristics of learning disabilities as well as various mild disabilities, and offers teaching strategies for general education teachers, special education teachers, school psychologists, and other related professionals. Preservice and in-service classroom teachers, who are increasingly responsible for teaching students with special needs within general education or inclusive classrooms, will find the text especially helpful.

I read this book for a college class and was working with a student who had been recommended for special education testing. It really helped me understand his difficulties and develop strategies for assisting him in beginning to overcome his educational limitations.

As a high school English teacher pursuing a graduate degree in Reading Specialization, I am learning resources to enhance my teaching, especially in supporting students with diverse needs. Learning Disabilities and Related Disabilities: Strategies for Success is more than a textbook—it’s a practical guide for every educator, whether in general or special education. It clearly explains the characteristics of learning disabilities and related disabilities while offering actionable strategies to create a more inclusive classroom. The strategies are invaluable for any teacher, as all classrooms include students who can benefit from scaffolding, differentiation, and thoughtful modifications.

The cross-categorical approach makes this book applicable to various teaching contexts. Even in my gen ed classroom, I found its insights invaluable for supporting multilingual learners and struggling readers. The book deepened my awareness of barriers to learning and provided tools to ensure every student has the chance to succeed. If you’re an educator committed to equity, this resource equips you to better meet the needs of all students, regardless of their challenges.
