Did you know that…

   • The word "noisome" has nothing whatsoever to do with noise?
   • "Ordinance" and "ordnance" have two distinct meanings?
   • An "errant" fool is a fool who is lost, while an "arrant" fool is one whose foolishness is obvious?
If any of these facts caught you by surprise, then you need Word Smart II. More than one million people improved their vocabulary with the original Word Smart, but an educated and powerful vocabulary doesn’t stop growing with one book! All of the 1,455 words featured in Word Smart II belong in an impressive vocabulary. Learning and using these words effectively can help you get better grades, score higher on tests, and communicate more confidently at work.

While not a good book to stand alone for learning vocabulary, it works well as a supplement to another vocabulary program. As we learned new words in another vocabulary book, we looked them up in Word Smart II>/i>, reading the entries and the example sentences. Its strengths are the selection of words commonly used in educated discourse, the good working definitions of the words in their most common usage, and the accompanying entertaining sentences. The weaknesses are that the entries are alphabetical rather than topical, which doesn't help students form connections between words, and that each word is only used in one exercise, which is inadequate review. I recommend it as a frequently used reference for vocabulary but not as a book to read and work through from beginning to end.

I didn't read this, but borrowed the cd's from the library.
The content is fine and well explained. It is the horrible dialogue by princeton drama club dropouts that is disappointing.

Completely unnecessary and annoying dick jokes. OK Dick(richard), i know it is hard, strait, long......

reallllllly?

Wait till you get to the franks and beans (in and out) section of words with prophylactics. Insert another dick joke.

Oh don't forget the 'tryst' that female dreams of daily....

sighhhhh

A quick gloss-over to acquire a good vocabulary . But it has to be supplemented by other vocabulary books . Otherwise most of the words won't be a part of your active sets of vocabulary .

While it's helpful in the sense that it provides easily understandable pronunciations, good sentence examples, a decent list of vocabulary for both SAT and GRE, it alone is not sufficient to gain a broad and comprehensive vocabulary. Use it more as a complementary guide and not as the main resource.

This book is more of vocabulary set, some I knew and some I lost. I have the audio, and it's worthless in my opinion because the book and the discs aren't in sync.
