Marine turned Monster Hunter, Boyd Knight, has found himself trapped in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the Fae Queen of Oblivion. Although the first leg of the Wyld Hunt has drawn to a close, there are still two more Hunts to go, and the targets will only get deadlier.
After slaying a Vampire Monarch and being cheated out of victory, the time for fun and games is officially over, and Boyd is ready to unleash some good ol’ fashioned fire and brimstone on anyone who gets in his way again. But it’s not just the nightmarish monsters and Fae champions that Boyd has to worry about—the Dark Queen has some nasty tricks up her sleeves, and if Boyd isn’t careful, he could find himself facing off against some of his closest allies.
If Boyd has any hope of survival, he’s going to need to make a few dark deals of his own to level the playing field and deliver some well-deserved Old Testament Wrath in the process…

This 4th book in a very thrilling LitRPG series is by far in my opinion the best. Boyd, the marine turned incarnate and chosen of Raguel to dole out justice, has lost the first round of the hunt set up by the evil Queen Ionia of the Oblivion Court. He lost because her allies cheated, so in the next two remaining rounds of the hunt Boyd knows he cannot play fair against such corrupt enemies and he sets all out to defeat them. He starts off by turning some of her own allies, those previously his enemies into part of his team and manages to gather three very powerful allies, if these could be trusted not to back stab him and his friends. His own people are all set up to carry out their roles first off by preparing a magnificent after party, and later in tackling round two of the hunt. Renholm decides to drop a bombshell on Boyd when he declares that he intends to abdicate and declare Boyd as his successor. Boyd is incensed at this announcement as he was willing to be a vigil, he is a magnificent warrior, after all he had been a marine in real life, however he had no idea how to be a king especially of the fae realm. However it seems Renholm is not the only one who thinks this is a good idea, Arturo believes he would make a great king and the new allies are willing to follow him and bow down to him if he gains the Oblivion throne. Can they survive the next two rounds of the hunt and can they take down the tree of chaos which was empowering the queen? A most thrilling and packed with action in every line book, filled with trickery and deceit and surprises, one which I could not put down till I had read the last line and boy what a fantastic ending it is!!
Boyd has stumbled but doesn't mean he is down for the count. After losing the first round of "The Hunt" and facing death if he doesn't at least win this next round, he will have to take it up a notch or two to fight the fae to survive. This chapter in the series will finish "The Hunt" and whether Boyd and his allies survive will come down to outthinking, outplaying, and outmaneuvering the fae on their own terms. We continue to get growth in character development, world building, and expanding our cast of characters. The prose is easy to read, the plot continues to be well thought out and does wander as some series can do in later books. If you like LitRPG books, I have found this series supper bingeworthy and look forward to the next installment.
Solid continuation of the series; good progress is made as the scope of Boyd's challenges gains more definition. This Devil Dog is bound for bigger things it seems, and a clash with the local civilian government (i.e. the kingdom he's in) seems inevitable.
Seems there's a whole lot of corruption for Boyd to deal with, and he's proven that he'll do what's necessary to defend his friends and allies. There's still room for this story to run, so I'm interested to see where it goes from here.
I never expected this story to go in this direction!
Boyd certainly marches to the beat of his own drum! I wasn’t really convinced by his rationale to upgrade his race - the other option wasn’t so disadvantaged that it made sense for Boyd to dismiss it so decisively.
What will the consequences for his choices, in this book, be? Will he use the final boon of his Monarch ability on his newest subject? Is that even possible?
The main character is utterly lame and only wins via dumb luck, no real skill or talent and really ?
“Get ready for Operation Jazz Hands. On my mark!”
this is some of the dumbest stuff I have seen in a book. There is so much filler in this book and very little worth while content as it just goes on and on so boring most of the time, I think maybe 10% of the book was ok.
This entire series has been excellent. Boyd is settling scores, kicking ass and taking names as only a pissed off Marine can do! Not happy with being an extension of the five faced god that brought him to the world, he is walking his own path delivering Justice in a way none of the could have forescene ! Now he's truly pushing the boundaries. Looking forward to the next book to see what happens next!
Awesome third installment to a really good series. I love the interactions in the book and the expansion of the world. The magic in the story is well done and Boyd is a very cool and funny main character. I love the other main characters and they are well done and written. This book was awesome and can not wait for book 5.
What can you say? A bit of a Witcher with a marine mad max, throw in a small pooka with visions of grandeur and you got a heck of a series... Bam Bam Bam.. Action fast and furious... Give it to me... Highly recommend JD Glasscock Author of the Series Blood Brothers and the Dream
Vigil's Wrath, book 4 of Vigil's Justice, intensifies the thrilling chase as Marine turned Monster Hunter, Boyd Knight, faces the deadly Fae Queen of Oblivion. With treacherous foes and unexpected betrayals, Boyd must unleash Old Testament Wrath and make dark deals to survive. Action-packed and gripping, this urban fantasy delivers an explosive adventure that won't disappoint.
Mess with the bull, you get the horns. Boyd goes on a rampage like a herd of bulls though a china shop.fighting old enemies, making new friends. Taking the fight to Ionia. We also learn more about Renfield's background, and his connection to Jeffrey in the confrontation between evil and less evil. Tom out
Many of the problems of the last couple of books in this series have been reduced here. The action scenes are still done very well, but here the plot makes more sense, the characters are less annoying (including the narration) and there is decent character development.
Recommended, at least if you have made it this far in the series.
1 for abandoning this series. Dick moven James, dick move.
I don't know if there is a shadow writer or James doesn't exist, but the writing style is not American and several phrases another British or Canadian author uses is rife throughout this series. I don't like being lied to and it is costing this author this reader.
Damn that's what heck of a book, I'm so liking the series so far and the m.c. is just hilarious and I look forward to reading more from the author and more from the series
I am obviously biased, having served 24 years in the Marine Corps, but this is the author’s best series yet. Love the characters, the world building, and the story arcs. Keep them coming!
Well this is a surprise as even good writers who do twists can throw readers some slieght of hand. Yes we hav action, kick ass new powers and of course some humour but this was the best story so far since VGO.
Couple of twists, add a sprinkle of Marine justice, some evil plants and you know this is a good time. The pacing was a bit quick at the end, but still satisfying in result. Happy to have read it, and look forward to the next one.
Liking the story so far. It's an interesting premise with good writing and editing. One suggestion if you read this Mr. Author. Maybe a loadable belt or something that holds scales against his skin to wear under stuff? Anyway, Liking the books keep em coming.
I found the twisting and turning of the plot as the story progressed interesting. Would love to read the next book as soon as possible! I need to Know!
