Australian Submarine AE2 was one of two Submarines to see service in the First World War. Built in England and commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in 1914. She and her crew initially saw service in German New Guinea and in patrol off Fiji before being towed to the Mediterranean. This is where she was assigned to the Dardanelles Campaign, and this is where this short story is set. A great deal of history is told of the ANZAC's and their feats on the Gallipoli Peninsula, but little is written of the AE2 and her part in that theatre. This historical fiction short story is written by a submariner who has much respect for the submariners who went before him.
⚓ Run Amok shines a light on a little-told part of WWI history. Instead of the well-known Gallipoli land battles, Simon Polling takes us beneath the waves with the AE2 submarine and its brave crew. Written with the respect of a submariner who knows the life, this short story brings honor, grit, and humanity to men who deserve to be remembered. A powerful, moving tribute to forgotten heroes.
