Unlike the brief, specific-solution oriented therapies that many people demand today, the goal of depth therapy is life change. James Bugental has been practicing, teaching and writing about depth therapy for 40 years, and in this book, he shares his experiences as a psychotherapist.
James Frederick Thomas Bugental was one of the predominant theorists and advocates of the Existential-humanistic therapy movement. He was a therapist, teacher and writer for over 50 years. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University, was named a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in 1955, and was the first recipient of the APA's Division of Humanistic Psychology's Rollo May Award. He held leadership positions in a number of professional organizations, including president of the California State Psychological Association.
In this book, James Bugental describes his practice of psychotherapy in a very detailed way, aided by multiple examples of the way he had been using different skills and intuitive tools, during the course of his therapeutic work. He certainly offers a very interesting and complete set of perspectives, and that’s probably why I consider this book to be kind of essential to the process of becoming a therapist or understanding how therapy can work and why therapy possibly isn’t for everyone. Mastering the art of the psychotherapist takes time, talent, a Socratic worldview and a set of skills that are throughly presented in the book.
A really enjoyable book that provides a clear perspective and rational for viewing psychotherapy as more than a scientific endeavor. Well written, and I appreciated the transcript of sessions embedded throughout.
Bugental serves a comprehensive and thorough guide towards depth psychology.
Thoughtful and engaging throughout, it is also a useful read for anyone that wishes to improve upon conversational technique and empathy, the two are inextricably interwoven in this outlook on therapy.
