Blood Ties #3

One Last Chance

Rate this book
High-octane adventure combines with sizzling romance for an explosive thriller featuring an ex Green Beret, a dangerous cult and a female private investigator who will let nothing stop her from rescuing her missing sister.

Former Green Beret Edge Logan has made a new life for himself at Nighthawk Security in Denver, using his finely honed skills to neutralize threats of all kinds. When he overhears friend and fellow agent Skye Delaney discussing a new case involving her missing sister and a mysterious cult, he offers himself as backup. With her own military background, Skye is gutsy and more than capable, but a cult like Children of the Sun is too risky for anyone to investigate alone.

Skye is grateful for Edge’s experience, though she is aware of the attraction simmering between them. Her battle scars make her reluctant to get involved with anyone, much less a coworker—even a warrior like Edge. But infiltrating the cult’s compound is more complicated than expected—and something much more sinister than worship is clearly going on behind its walls. As the pair works against the clock to unearth high-stakes secrets, their personal barriers begin to crumble. Together, can they unmask the face of evil before their time runs out?

Kathleen Kelly Martin (aka Kathy Lawrence, Kasey Mars)

Kathleen Kelly was born on 14 July 1947 in the Central Valley of California, USA. She obtained a degree in Anthropology and also studied History at the University of California in Santa Barbara. She was a real estate broker, when she met her future husband, Larry Jay Martin. A short time after the two became acquainted, Larry asked her to read an unpublished manuscript of an historical western he'd written. Kat fell in love with both the book and the author! Then, after doing some editing for him, she thought she'd try her own hand at writing. She moved on to become a full time writer.

Published since 1988, she signed her books with her married name, Kat Martin, but she also used two pseudonyms: Kathy Lawrence for a book in collaboration with her husband Larry Jay Martin, and Kasey Mars for her first contemporary romances. The New York Times bestselling writer, among her many awards, has won the prestigious RT Book Review Magazine Career Achievement Award. To date, Kat has over eleven million copies of her books in print. She has been published in seventeen foreign countries, including England, South Africa, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Greece, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Bulgaria, China, and Korea.

Currently residing with her husband, a Western-writer and photographer, in Missoula, Montana, USA. But when they are not writing, they also enjoy skiing and traveling, particularly to Europe.

"I've always loved books. I was an avid reader, with any number of my own stories rolling around in my head. Writing them down seemed a logical step."

"I love anything old," Kat says. "I love to travel and especially like to visit the places where my books are set. My husband and I often stay in out-of-the-way inns and houses built in times past. It's fun and it gives a wonderful sense of a by-gone era."

Kat Martin returns with the third book in the Blood Ties: The Logans romantic suspense series. This tense high stakes and perilous thriller features former Green Beret Edge Logan and ex-military Skye Delaney. Both work for the same security firm in Denver, Colorado as private investigators. Edge was forced to resign from the military and has a new life mainly providing security for high profile clients. Skye left the military after an improvised explosive device hit her vehicle and she was badly injured. While attracted to each other, neither has been willing to act on it. They don’t want to risk their friendship.

When Edge overhears Skye talking with her stepmother, he offers to provide back-up. Skye’s half-sister Callie hasn’t been heard from in a couple of months. She had joined a commune-like organization that is remote, fenced, and has guards. How can they access the compound and talk with Callie? Is she there willingly or is there something sinister happening? How will this affect Edge, Skye, and their personal and professional relationships?

While Edge and Skye are both strong, brave, and independent, they both have backstories that affect their relationships. They’re relatable, but flawed. Edge’s anger at his resignation from the military and Skye’s insecurities around her disfigurement affect each of them differently. Can they overcome them? They’re bold and intense protagonists who transform during the course of the storyline.

The story captivated me from the first page to the last. The deeply involved and multi-layered plot has some unpredictable moments that add suspense and danger. The world-building is excellent even as the locations change from Colorado to other states. The writing is fluid and flows well in this unsettling thriller that occasionally makes your blood run cold. It kept delivering exciting outcomes through the characters as I frantically turned the pages. This action-packed novel features deception, deaths, jealousy, greed, romance, family, friends, trust, corruption, and power over others. It also depicts the devastating actions certain organizations take and the effects they can have on the victims.

Overall, this action-packed romantic suspense has great characterization, a little spice, and plenty of action. Those who enjoy romantic suspense novels will likely enjoy this book. This is the eleventh book I have read by this author across multiple series. This one has the right mix of romance, tension and a thrilling storyline.

Kensington Books and Kat Martin provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. This is my honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date is currently set for November 29, 2022. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

One Last Chance by Kat Martin
Blood Ties: The Logan’s #3. Romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone.
Former Green Beret Edge and former military Skye team up to infiltrate a cult that has more than just vegetables growing in the fields.

Intense with a fast pace and explosive situations. Didn’t like the forced circumstances and the men that took advantage but they are quickly dealt with as Edge and Skye break down the doors and then follow until they save and catch and get their hea.

This is a well-written, entertaining, fast paced, romantic suspense novel. It has a an intelligent, brave, strong and capable, wounded war hero female protagonist, a likable, former military male protagonist, sizzling chemistry, caring and supportive friends and family, intrigue, twists and turns, and a happily ever after ending. This is the third entry in Ms. Martin's outstanding Blood Ties series, and it can be easily read and enjoyed as a stand alone. I am looking forward to reading the next entry in this series with great anticipation. Ms. Martin never disappoints her readers!
NetGalley and Kensington Books kindly provided me with an ARC of this novel, and this is my honest opinion.

I hate cults as a plot premise. I just hate them. If this had not been a Kat Martin book, I would have passed it by. As much as I hate cults, I love Kat Martin. Thankfully the plot doesn't stay with the cult for long. Edge and Skye are a wonderful couple, so well matched in many ways including their hard-headedness. The work with each other to solve the problems they face, and I love that in a romantic duo.

Edge Logan is a former Army Green Beret who was falsely accused and forced to resign his commission in order to avoid a court-martial. His goal since leaving the Army is to bring down the Major responsible, clear his name and rejoin the Green Berets. Working for Nighthawk Security in Denver is just biding his time until he can do that. When he overhears Skye Delaney and her stepmother discussing her missing half-sister, Callie, Edge is pretty sure that Skye is going to need help on this, even though he knows that Skye is more than capable of handling any situation and getting close to the beautiful Skye may not be in his best interest, but the attraction has been building for months and there is no denying it.

Skye's sister has joined a cult, The Children of the Sun, and hasn't been heard from for over two months. Her mother is frantic, and Skye is concerned too. She is grateful that Edge wants to help, but at the same time she doesn't want to get further involved with a co-worker she is attracted to and who is devastatingly handsome and has a love 'em and leave 'em reputation. Skye has physical scars from her time in the Army and hasn't had good experience dating since that time. It would kill her if she got close to Edge and he ran like her ex-fiancé. But Callie's safety is more important and that has to be the priority.

What they find in the cult compound is a lot worse than they could imagine and getting Callie out is just the beginning of a dangerous and deadly mission.

My thanks to Kensington Books, Publisher, and Kat Martin, author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

Kat Martin delivers again! This is the 3rd book of her Blood Ties series. This is the story of Edge Logan and Skye Delaney, who investigate for Nighthawk Security, and features their friendship, partnership, and the journey through their walls keeping it from being more to arrive at a happily ever after.

Getting there these strong intelligent yet vulnerable characters go up against some really vicious villians while rescuing family and closing down a drug syndicate and more. Through all the investigating and action, which has you at the edge of your sest and wondering what's behind the knock on the door, the underlying thread of Family is prevalent.

Our hero felt cut off from his family and found another in the army, he is driven to clear his name and return to it. Our Heroine after traumatic injury damaging her leg, ending a previous relationship, has closed herself off from seeking a relationship or building a family. Keeping a distance, keeping walls up becomes difficult as a relationship forms. All they go through on this case and sewing up loose ends they face, has them awakening to family, and who people in their lives truly are to them, especially who they are to each other.

Sometimes nightmares and dreams are difficult to bring to an end or change, and its a wonderful read following their discovery of family, friends, and life passion, coming to understand what it is they truly want and are ready for.

The primary and secondary protagonists from Nighthawk Security are Bad*ss! Love the way this Romantic Suspense unfolds as they not only hunt down the antagonists but as Edge and Skye give into their attraction, which has them confused about what their worlds their futures hold for them, has you turning pages to see where it all goes. Very satisfied with the conclusion of this book, I'm wondering if other members of Nighthawk Security will find a HEA, too.

This series just keeps getting better and better. There is a lot of action in this novel with enough romance thrown in to keep you reading. In this novel we get to focus on Edge's story.
After being discharged from the military for something he didn't do Edge finds himself working at the Nighthawk detective agency with Skye.
It does not take long for things to heat up between Edge and Skye you can almost smell the chemistry.
Martin's characters are so well written that you feel like they are old friends. The story itself is suspenseful and really well done.
Many thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this novel.

This is such a fantastic book and I devoured it in a day. I didn’t read the first two books in this series but I will now. This book is worth re reading and there’s so much action that keeps you on edge. Loved the chemistry between Edge and Skye. They work great as a team and will rescue her half sister from a cult. Loved that there’s even more to the story, that there’s a big operation they must go after. Also, will Edge realize he loves Skye? Or is he going to choose returning to the Army? Thankfully there’s a very happy ever after and I loved getting an epilogue that cover six months from their happy ever after. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy through NetGalley and I highly recommend this book.

Written like it was to be a 5 episode TV show. Caper after caper ties up so neatly. I got so tired of the way Egde and Skye talked about lusting after each other. The language was so repetitive and adolescent. I wanted to like the book so bad that I finished it and I kicked myself because I’ll never get that time back.

This would've been a decent novel, without graphic sex scenes. When authors, includes these into their story it can enhance or distract from the "story being told" . It doesn't add to the story so I moved on to another book.

This romantic suspense title is the third in the Logans series. We met youngest brother Edge in the previous book. Edge was forced to resign from the Army and is determined to clear his name, bring his crooked superior officer to justice, and resume his career as a Green Beret. While attempting to do this, he is working for Nighthawk Security in Denver.

Skye Delaney also works for Nighthawk Security. She's also former Army, but her career was ended when she encountered an IED which hurt her left leg and left her with disfiguring scars.

Edge and Skye are attracted to each other, but both have reasons not to pursue a relationship. Edge is on his way to somewhere else, and Skye is very sensitive about her scars which, she feels, already cost her a fiancé. But events are such that they are thrown together and can't fight their attraction.

When Skye's stepmother calls her and asks her to check on her younger stepsister Callie, she and Edge head to the Children of the Sun compound to look into things. This very cult-like compound concerns them both. When they are refused entry and can't communicate with Skye's sister, they send in a drone which shows some suspicious activity. With an uninterested sheriff, they decide to rescue Callie on their own.

They get Callie out but not her good friend Lila. A failed drug raid sends the villain's fleeing, taking Callie's friend Lila with them. A promise to Callie keeps Nighthawk Security and especially Edge and Skye searching for the cult leader and his followers.

The story was a fast-paced and exciting one. From a cult compound to the glitter of Las Vegas drug deals to intercepting an illegal arms shipment in Mexico, there is a lot of action. It also had a nice amount of spicy romance. The characters were well-developed and interesting people. I enjoyed it.

When Skye Delaney receives a call from her stepmom, it's obvious something is wrong. Callie, Skye's half-sister, hasn't touched base with her mother for two months. Edge Logan offers to tag along as backup.

Skye is the sister of Conner, who owned and operated Nighthawk Security, where she and Edge were both employed.

Edge joined the team after being forced to resign from the army, knowing he was the fall guy. Edge was a Green Beret, something he always dreamed of becoming. The injustice is something he carries with him.

Skye has scars of her own, ones that she wears and after being deeply rejected, she doesn't get too close to anyone.

A trip out to check on Callie only confirms suspicions that all is not well. Skye and Edge are not only friends, but work well together as teammates. They already come up with a plan, just hoping Callie will agree.

A venture of snatch-and-grab turns into a bigger issue than just a cult. One where Skye and Edge aren't sure who can be trusted. As Skye and Edge work side by side, they can't ignore the attraction they feel for one another. After Edge lets a comment slip, Skye realizes that they both are on two different paths.

Skye demands to accompany Edge on one more mission as a payback for helping her half-sister. This mission may bring clarity and a happy ending, if Skye will believe in Edge's sincerity.

I've enjoyed all the books in the series with lots of action and unknowns. Edge and Skye's story had me cheering them on. Now I'm left wondering about Trace and Conner and hope there are more books in the series with their stories.

I requested & received an ARC from NetGalley via Kensington Books and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.

“‘I know you were wounded. I know what the explosion did to your leg. I don’t care.’ She blinked away the wetness. ‘You might when you see what’s left of me.’ He caught her shoulders. ‘I’ve seen men blown in half right in front of me…Your leg isn’t the part of you I’m interested in.’” 🔥

Former Green Beret Edge Logan has made a new life for himself at Nighthawk Security in Denver, using his finely honed skills to neutralize threats of all kinds. When he overhears Skye Delaney discussing a new case involving her missing sister and a mysterious cult, he offers himself as backup. With her own military background, Skye is gutsy and more than capable, but a cult like Children of the Sun is too risky for anyone to investigate alone. Skye is grateful for Edge’s experience, even though she is aware of the attraction simmering between them. As the pair works against the clock to unearth high-stakes secrets, the personal barriers between them begin to crumble.

Romantic suspense?! I didn’t even know that was a thing, but I am very glad that it is. One Last Chance is book 3 in The Logan’s series. I have not read the first two in the series so this seems to be fine as a stand alone. This book has it all and I flew through it in one sitting! There are ex-military bad asses, cults, crooked military men, and drugs. But there is also love, the ties of family, and hope. An all around enjoyable read.

This was the perfect bridge between the Logan family and the men and women working with Edge. He and Skye have seemingly unrequited lust going for each other, and he’s tried to steer clear of acting on it. Until now. The only problem? He couldn’t have picked a less convenient time to let his feelings be known. Skye deserves the world and Edge may only have today to offer her. Especially when it seems that his dreams of justice are finally becoming a reality. But maybe he has a new dream now?

I really enjoyed the pace of this story. The danger wasn’t unbelievable. The camaraderie and trust between these folks was fantastic. And the bite of angst and misery helped round it all out. I wanted to smack both Skye and Edge upside the head a couple of times, which made this very much a question of timing for the two of them. And when it all worked out in the end, I was left with one question. When do I get more?

This book is weird. I feel like it’s missing the first half. The MCs are already in love and things/feelings move super fast. The characters are lacking depth so it all feels off. Couldn’t feel any chemistry between them. Meh.

I loved this book and I was sad to see it end! The characters are not only believable, but they fairly jump off the page. Edge Logan and Skye Delaney work together for a security firm and are tasked with getting Skye’s half sister away from a cult that seems to be holding her captive. In their quest to save Callie, they discover an underbelly of the cult that is dangerous to investigate but compelling to these two to destroy. I enjoyed the relationship that developed between Edge and Skye. It was predictable but a welcome addition to a story that was heart-pounding at times. Although I don’t really enjoy steamy scenes in my books the ones included here were easy to skim and move along to the rest of the real story. There are multiple layers built into the plot and just when I thought that everything was coming to a conclusion, another twist appeared and Edge and Skye continued in their quest to save their little corner of the world. I liked that both main characters had pasts that left them vulnerable and hard to accept love. But what I really enjoyed was the realistic detail of the action scenes, with the feel of a real battle going on as the heroes set about to conquer a ruthless and dangerously determined enemy. My heart was in my throat each time a villain appeared because I never could guess what evil they were about to perpetrate on unsuspecting victims. This book was perfectly paced, moderate at first and then quick paced like a runaway train all the way to the end. This book is part of a series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone since I have not read the previous books and thoroughly got engaged in this book’s riveting story. My only regret is that I have not read the first two books in the series, but I do plan to remedy that in the near future. With a compelling plot and characters that plot, this book will be enjoyed by all who like edgy romantic suspense with lots of twists.

Thank you to Goodreads & Kensington Books/Publishing for my winning this book.
It was totally worth it! Woo hoo!

Skye’s half sister is in need of rescue from a cult. Edge & Skye work together while sexual tension leaps from the pages.
Finally Edge's story!!!!
Typical of Martin & her series: there was sex tension & chemistry build-up, strong characters, suspense, and lots of action to keep you on the edge.

Story deals with cults so it was intense at times.
Trigger warnings: SA, drugs & violence.

Is Trace’s story next? Or maybe Conn? I can't wait to read the next story in the series.

I was able to read this easily as the narrative had a quick flow. Once started, I didn't put it down for the 2 hours it took to read.

Ms. Martin has provided an entertaining read! The third book in her Blood Ties Series is a fast-paced romantic suspense. Edge and Skye provide truly an engaging suspenseful story. While they are discovering their attraction, and learning to accept, you find yourself cheering for them. Very satisfying page-turning story. I plan to go back and read the first two books.

Thank you to Kensington Publishing and Goodreads for the ARC. I enjoyed the reading and sharing my thoughts.

This was the best read of the series. Martin got down to business and into the suspense of the story. I do like a good cult based story and the twist of the drug connection in this one was well done. I could have done without Edge's military backstory -- it was more of a distraction to the main story.

Very similar to the last books. I would still say the second book was my favorite. I liked that this had a secondary story in it, at the same time the transition to the second story could have been better. It didn't take away from the novel but didn't add much to it either. Still a good read, if you liked the two previous books I'm sure you'll like this one as well.

I'm a little bit bummed with this one!

I read the last book in this series a little ironically, because I didn't really love the plot and the writing made me laugh, but I thought the characters had chemistry and it kept me just enough interested to add another one of Kat Martin's books to my goodreads list.

When this one started off SO MUCH STRONGER than the last one, I was jumping up and down inside!

Omg-yay GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

My biggest issue with the last book was that I just couldn't get behind the treasure hunting plot. When this one started off with a super creepy cult AND the characters had chemistry AND tragic backstories, I was absolutely thrilled. Edge and Skye were a much more interesting couple to read about, and I really cared about where their relationship was going.

And then...the middle of the book happened?

Around the middle of the book, the cult rescue plot was tied up, and Edge and Skye had already gone through practically their whole relationship arc (not together, resisting attraction, giving in, false high, doubt, breakup). So not only is the thriller plot practically tied up (Spoiler Alert: ) but all of the good tension between Edge and Skye has built up, simmered down, and they're in the doubt beat and we're only halfway through. From there, nothing else was carrying the story for me.

Overall, meh. After such a strong start, I'm honestly surprised to say that I enjoyed the last book more, because at least the tension and pacing was consistent. I can't say that this book completely ruined me for Kat Martin, because the floppy large paperbacks with bold spines call for me at the bookstore, but who knows? Maybe I'll pick up another one.

I received a copy of One Last Chance earlier this year and was unaware, so the read and review of this thrill ride by Kat Martin is happening way later than it should.

With that being said, I absolutely loved this book. I have been a fan of Kat Martin for years and she rarely ever disappoints. This story had it all, the intrigue, suspense, action, danger, a teeny bit of angst. It has a cult aspect, but the author manages to touch enough on it without delving into the abyss of it.

Edge Logan has a mission to redeem himself, but is struggling against his attraction to Skye. Skye has her own struggles and isn’t sure what to make of Edge and her feelings. In the meantime, they both have jobs to do and people to rescue.

I don’t know how Kat Martin manages to infuse all the different aspects of a military romantic suspense but she does it perfectly. If you haven’t started reading the
#BloodTies series, you are missing out! One Last Chance can be read as a stand-alone but I enjoy reading the series. It’s like a fun reunion when the previous characters’ visit which happens often in Kat Martin’s world!

One Last Chance is the third book in the "The Logans" series. This one is Edge and Skye's story. It works very well as a stand alone. There are references to the previous books, but nothing important that you really need to know. While I did like this one, I think it's my least favorite of the three so far.

This one is more of an action adventure story than a suspense. I mean, you basically know who the bad guy is, you just don't know how it will all play out. So, I kind of found it a bit uninteresting. Toward the end, there is a resolution to Edge's story pertaining to his dishonorable discharge, but that was a bit underwhelming as well. As for the relationship. I did like that they had a history of attraction. It made it seem less insta-lovey. But, the biggest issue I had was lack of communication between the two. I mean had they had one conversation a lot of angst could have been avoided. As I said, it was fine. I did like it in the end, it just wasn't my favorite.
