The Marvel universe was changed beyond recognition in 2019 with the ascendance of the mutants; for me it was six plus years of weak storytelling and a huge betrayal of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's original concept. So my take on this the start of the Fall of X, might be a tad bit biased. The six online Infinite comics are only worth reading for new readers, although the Frenzy (#103) and Juggernaut (#105) stories are top class., the rest are quite poor. The FCBD comic sees the first attacks on the mutants in New York and the Avengers! The main work is the 80-page Hellfire Gala 2023, which is simply the beat Marvel comic I've read in over possible a decade. No spoilers - the mutants, superheroes and humans assemble for the annual Gala, but this one ends in a way that has (mot will, has) change the Marvel universe for ever. Hash tag must read for Marvel readers. This so dark I would add a trigger warning for violence! This main issue was a straight-up Five Star read, but overall the other comics bring this collection down to a rounded up Four Star, 7.5 out of 12 read.

Wow. I can’t even put into words how messed up I am right now. That was so fucked up. The Fall of the House of X is finally here and it is very sad. On a brighter note! They handled the return of Ms. Marvel very well and I can’t wait to see her series and hopefully we can learn what her mutant power is. I’m glad they’re not erasing the Inhuman part of her and she’s the first person to be both Inhuman and Mutant. Mentioning things that haven’t been talked about in a long time to explain it is smart and makes it feel more thought out. Obviously some things are going to be reversed but that was an absolutely devastating read.

God DAMN.

Why can’t the X-Men just be left alone?

Why are humans (in and out of comics) so fucking jealous, spiteful and lacking in empathy?

I think this book (amen I’m only speaking of the non-Infinity comics, ‘cause I know better than to read that trash) pisses me off so much because it hits a little too close to home.

The Fall has begun... and I was not ready. My jaw dropped far and stayed down...
I knew this GN was going to detail the beginning of this X-Era, so I stayed away from spoilers, only knowing very little. I'm so glad I did...
Brief Highlights:
- We get a new Hellfire Gala, complete with lots of backstories about the people who ultimately end up getting voted into the new team of X-Men.
- With Scott and Jean stepping down completely, the team is voted on and restructured into: Synch, Talon, Jubilee, Dazzler, Juggernaut, Prodigy and Frenzy.
- Seconds after that, chaos happens. Massive amounts of mutants die from an Orchis attack, and the rest are forced to leave Krakoa to save lives of humans.
- By the end, Krakoa has a population of 1 and all the gates are closed.

If you are reading the X-Books, you have to read this. Everything after it starts here!
Strong recommend.

While the X-Men Unlimited issues were mostly not good, the other issues in this trade absolutely made up for it. What happened in this is absolutely ridiculous and I’m left with my jaw hanging open, eagerly awaiting more. This is huge!

As is the case with the Hellfire Gala trades, there is the one-shot issue on the Gala itself, which not only allows for the Krakoan mutants looking absolutely fabulous, but initiates the next seismic shirt for the era itself. However, there is also a bunch of issues from other Marvel titles that has some connection to the Gala, and they are usually a mixed bag.

Before we get to the Gala itself, the trade opens with Free Comic Book Day 2023: Avengers/X-Men, in which Cyclops fails to stop an infiltrator who destroys the X-Men's treehouse and steals the Captain Krakoa suit, which will be used for something dastardly at Washington. Oh, and the Avengers pop us for a few pages as they are about to fight some Orchis agents. Honestly, it didn't really want to read any more from Uncanny Avengers, where apparently Rogue is among the roster.

And then we get into the Hellfire Gala issue written by Gerry Duggan, which is a perfect starting point for the immediate Fall of X event. A lot of revelations happen along the way, starting with Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel being resurrected, discovering she is actually a mutant, as well as maintaining her Inhuman genes. Although I'm still unhappy about how Kamala got to this position – especially with the crimes that Zeb Wells has committed during his Amazing Spider-Man run – this issue lays enough groundwork that it'll be interesting to see where the character goes from here, who has got her own solo miniseries that ties in with the Krakoan Era.

It is also in this issue where we are introduced to the roster that will headline the next issues of Duggan's X-Men run, with Cyclops and Jean Grey taking a step-back from leading the team. From one splash page that features the new team – Synch, Talon, Prodigy, Cannonball, Frenzy, Dazzler and the Juggernaut (yes, really) – to the next splash page where Nimrod literally drops in and causes chaos. What starts as a night of celebration for mutants with the hope of a co-existence with everyone else, becomes an event of destruction as Orchis make their move on the mutant nation, where blood is spilt and whatever mutants there are left, they have to leave Krakoa itself.

With many artists involved, including Adam Kubert, Luciano Vecchio, Matteo Lolli, Russell Dauterman, Javier Pina, R.B. Silva, Joshua Cassara, Kris Anka, and Pepe Larraz, the transition from one style to another could have been jarring. And yet, despite each artist doing a few pages here and there, it all balances out in telling a story that features high fashion, bloody spectacle and wonderful character moments.

Sadly, the praise does not carry forward with the remaining issues in this trade, which includes X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #100-105, serving as a prelude to the Gala, in which we see the future X-Men getting ready for it. Considering the upsetting events of the Gala itself, it does make you wonder if Duggan is actually going to stick with this new roster. And speaking of Duggan, this trade with an issue of his Iron Man run, in which Tony Stark tries to fend off a bunch of Stark Sentinels to protect Emma Frost and several other mutants.

What gives this trade a pass is for the Hellfire Gala issue alone, which is such a game-changer in showing how this mutant utopia is coming to an end, paving the way for the upcoming Fall of the House of X.

Another utopia falls - maybe I shouldn't have read this so soon after finishing Miracleman: The Silver Age. On the other hand, at least this makes that look a little better in comparison. Clumsy as it ended up, I can't deny The Silver Age had ambition, whereas this just has a brief. Yes, the whole Krakoan age has had stories about the cracks in the mutants' new island paradise, but this completely ignores most of them, bar those established in Duggan's own X-Men - one of the weakest, least bold books in the line. Bar his Excalibur, I've often found that Duggan's stuff reads like it's running on fiat. Which, yes, to some extent is true of any fiction, and superhero comics more than most - 'You know that guy we told you was invulnerable? Well, actually he's vulnerable to this thing we just made up to create jeopardy!' But the art of writing them is concealing that, whereas here it's glaring, all the mutants' achievements suddenly suborned by genocidal twats Orchis because time's up on Krakoa and don't look too hard at the details. Absolute twaddle, and depressing twaddle at that. The collection is somewhat redeemed by the Steve Foxe material, solo stories set in the weeks prior for the new team annihilated as soon as they were unveiled. Illustrated by Noemi Vettori, they have all the joy and charm the main event is so determined to trample into the dust. Oh, and there are some very pretty variant covers, especially Captain Marvel's jacket. Overall, though - ugh.

thank god this book was on sale. a whole mess. only redeeming parts were ermm
1. Larraz/Gracia illustrating legit 6 beautiful pages. i don’t understand why Larraz only got to draw 6 pages. like let him do the whole issue PUH LEAZE. He got the whole planet size x-men issue first hellfire gala.
2. oh. that was actually it. i thought i was gonna list more reasons
3. actually i did like that at the end there was a page that said “Fall of X” to signal the new era.

basically save your money and buy the single issue of hellfire gala. no one wants to read the supplemental stuff after🙂‍↔️

edit: changed it from 2 to 3 stars cause the uncanny avengers issue was good. good monologue from whoever that dude was. the placement was odd but i understand they couldn’t really slip it in the middle.

This book was just perfect. I knew things had to reach a climax at some point with the whole Krakoa thing, but my mind was blown away and I couldn't be more satisfied. It's been a while since I really connected this deeply with the X-Men.

Hellfire Gala: Fall of X marks a major status quo shift. While highly poignant at moments, the overall legacy of this book will be largely dependent on how the events set up with this book play out.

Hickman’s X-men run promised not only potential but something new; this marks the beginning of the end of that promise. Very disappointing that a masterclass in comic story telling ends with more of the same tragic story we’ve been told for years.

And so we come to the beginning of the end for what I would call the Empire of the Mutants... the Nation of Krakoa has shaken up the world ever since the new island home for Mutant-kind was created during the seminal House of X/Powers of X storyline by Jonathan Hickman in 2019 that completely upended the status quo of mutants in the Marvel Comics universe.

The Hellfire Gala has been an annual event since then that was a declaration of Mutant sovereignty, a show of power and a bit of an extravagant soiree for Krakoans to mingle with the upper echelon of human society and the powers-that-be. Until now - because as the full title indicates, this is not a happy party in the end. Last year the humans of Earth were thrown into a tizzy with the reveal that on top of everything else, the Mutants had colonised Mars and now everyone is waiting for the next big thing. Not the least of which is the announcement (as preceding years) where the latest primary team of X-Men is elected and announced.
The atmosphere in the festivities are as taut and tense as ever and everyone is having a great time, as much as they can anyway, while on tenterhooks and the games and machinations are underway. But there are some nasty surprises in store. We start of the issue seeing a strange figure managing to skillfully infiltrate the empty Krakoan tree-house in New Yorks' Central Park with evil intent; shocking events take place in the U.S Capitol; someone is attacking Avengers and in the midst of all this there are some surprise entrants, including the infamous Sentinels - there is all this and much more as the anti-Mutant organisation known as Orchis finally starts to make their moves and show their hand.
Blood is shed, chaos is created and the proverbial feces hits the fan...

Overall I have to say that the issue was a very mixed bag for me. There are some very good moments and the Orchis chess-moves are devastating to watch unfold. The stakes are raised and characters are forced to make profound and game-changing choices that upend everything that has been built over the last 4-5 years (in our time, not by Marvels' sliding time-scale). If you were going to end of the Dawn of the Mutant Age, this is definitely one hell of a way to kick that off and more than most things, it was enough to make me want to read the X-books again. Frankly that is what gives it a higher score for me, because as I see with some of the characterisations and some of the dynamics between the mutants that were built in this new Krakoa - particularly after Hickman started to step away - has been less than interesting for me.

Also, the new team of X-Men that was announced at the party... frankly I saw that page and one character aside, I was genuinely wondering who in their right mind thought this was a good idea as anything except maybe a joke? But, that could just be me, some of them are niche-favourite characters so you never know.

This is frankly me restarting reading X-Men comics pretty much after nearly 1 year and I was playing catch-up to get to this book. By that point, it was a few titles like Marauders that still kept me engaged, but the multitude of X-books they hit readers with in scattershot were largely forgettable and even with decent concepts behind them, I found them mostly mediocre or outright boring. Being a one-shot that is dense and packed with very high-stakes happenings makes this a more engaging read, but the story-lines that got us here and seeing some of the characters themselves is still not really all that interesting and carries some lingering bad-taste from what got us here - the Orchis organisation remains the most intriguing thing as a concept. That and watching the now-fugitive Wilson Fisk (after the events of Devils' Reign) just quietly do his thing in the midst of all the big-bang ongoings.

The art is solid like many Marvel books and the action and look is pretty good (for the most part) but there are panels and pages where it felt perhaps rushed or the look was just... eh... though thankfully that was limited. The art was overall a stronger point for this one-shot than the story itself, which was clearly really trying and was a step up from what I consider the recent morass-feeling X-line of books, but none of it was great.

Would I recommend this? Perhaps as a potential jumping-on-point if you want to see the inevitable chaos that is about to hit with the Mutants being hit hard and what is the fall of the nation of Krakoa that is inevitable hereafter. If you're, like me, a fan of X-Men comics but have struggled recently, I would say it is worth a try - and if you've been someone who enjoyed these comics the last few years, then you will likely find this to be a banger of an issue.

Despite seeing spoilers for what happened at the Gala, this was still a pretty rough read. It’s a tragedy that many have been waiting for since Krakoa began back in 2019: the second mutant massacre, and this time its characters we’ve been following for ages.

Since this is a trade paperback built around a single issue, there are a lot of things included: Free Comic Book Day Avengers/X-Men 2023, X-Men Unlimited 100-105, and Iron Man 8, along with the main Hellfire Gala supersize issue.

Honestly, if you’ve seen spoilers for the main twist at the Gala, I recommend reading the X-Men Unlimited issues first. Each one is a spotlight of a different character elected to the X-Men at the gala: Cannonball, Prodigy, Frenzy, Dazzler, Jubilee, and Juggernaut. Each of them does a nice job painting the focal character as a hero and worthy of being on the X-Men. It seems to function as a 6-part back-door pilot so that readers have some idea of the characters what to expect from them in an X-Men title. The art isn’t the greatest I’ve seen, but it all works well. There’s dynamism and unique character designs (Cannonball actually looks lanky, which I often use as a shorthand to see how hard the artist is trying).

The FCBD issue is what those always are. A tease of something to come that doesn’t reveal anything. At that time, we didn’t know why this person was stealing the armor and attacking the White House. We didn’t know it was tied to the plans for the gala. We didn’t even know who was behind it (except that it was Orchis).

The Gala issue itself starts off pretty rocky. The focus is on Ms. Marvel and her resurrection after the retcon of her origin to include being a mutant. The art here is a bit shaky, as Kamala does not look like herself, but there are about a dozen artists on this issue, so it quickly changes. There’s a speed-run through various things happening at the gala, including an awkwardly shoehorned moment with Hickman’s latest creations in the GODS book he’s been doing that doesn’t pay any dividends, before the big vote and *it* happens. I was shocked how early the twist occurred, though it made sense how much story was left after that. Those last several pages were heart wrenching with gut punch after gut punch knocking the wind out of the readers. I am not a fan of ending the Krakoan era, but it seems to be setting up for a decent story with this opening.

Finally, the Iron Man issue is clearly intended to set up the crossover where Emma starts showing up in Tony’s book. It picks up right after the gala going through a confrontation with Tony and Emma saving each other. It’s honestly enough to make me really want to read the issues Emma shows up in, because Gerry Duggan gives them some great chemistry, and I love a story about Emma seeking revenge.

So there it is. Heartbreak galore, but what a process to get there.

I guess I expected other lines (that maybe I’m behind on?) to be prologuing The Fall before I got to the Hellfire Gala, but this volume really kicked it off. It’s an admittedly mixed bag, with a serialized series of shorts, another brief short, an Iron Man issue which seems incomplete, and a FCBD Avengers issue that actually is tied in pretty well to the events of the Gala. Given how big this volume is at nearly 200 pages, I was left a bit frustrated not knowing where all the mutants were, what is happening with their resurrection going forward, or how EVERYONE on Earth turned wholly against mutants. I know all of these elements were touched on to one degree or another in the story just told here, but I’m also very used to Marvel shifting between issues without a ton of clarity. Maybe it’s the recency of reading Sins of Sinister, but I’m just experiencing some whiplash regarding “let’s tell the worst story for the fall of mutants” right before we engage with a storyline now centered on…the fall of mutants.

I’m going to be honest — there’ve been a lot of weak story and pacing beats in the Krakoa age, but generally I’ve liked the more hopefully tone and the boundary pushing of what mutants can do. I know comics can’t sit with hope for too long before that also stagnates a narrative but like…something about this feels rushed still, even after a few years of stories.

Fundamentally, The Fall of X is what it needed to be. A traumatic, awe-inspiring event full of sound and fury (actually signifying something).

But, there are two major plot holes in this issue, which is unfortunate for such a big event. This first is that it's hard to believe that Xavier doesn't understand what's happening as he orders people through the gates (because it seemed pretty obvious to this reader). The second is that the X-Men's refusing his mental command seems entirely at odds with the supposed problem Xavier is responding to. If Orchis is going to kill people if they stay, then why would they refuse Xavier's command? And why wouldn't he just ask them not to?

I'm hoping those sore thumbs don't seem as bad on a reread (or after seeing a bit about the new Fall of X era).

This volume has two good stories: the Uncanny Avengers and the Gala that lead things off. It then has a bunch of digital garbage which is just barely worth reading for insights to the new X-Men team (if they actually come together?). And then there's an intriguing Iron Man, but it's just a piece of the Iron Man story. Got me to add it to my buy-list though, so I guess there's that.

I'm actually really sad Krakoa is ending with a burn-it-all-down final act.

But the mutants have really done a piss-poor job at managing their enemies since even before Inferno. The fact that Mr. Sinister was not under extreme scrutiny from the word go is something I'll never understand. Orchis was basically never challenged on the messaging front. X-Force has been a dogshit at preventing problems. And the Quiet Council was too interested in bickering and factionalism to actually operate with a governing vision. Xavier himself lost the plot a while ago without Jean, Magneto, and even Apocalypse to back him up and reign him in.

So, yeah. I suppose I as a reader know more about the myriad conspiracies to destroy the mutant nations than the actual mutants, but they really should have seen it coming. Hated and feared is kind of their thing.

The book itself was pretty good. I'm just musing a little. I liked the promise of the Krakoa era, and I would like to see the X-Men get a happy ending, but that was never in the cards. Still, I'm going to ride this thing through to the end.

There is one issue here of incredible significance, and it reads like a compacted plot. I don't know what to make of the pace - - why boring filler would be given full issues of bad art and throw-away stories and character, while the *undoing of a decade of world-building* is given roughly 10 pages... editorial staff at Marvel are nowhere near as bright as the writers they are lucky to have.
Anyway - there are some fairly worthwhile things happening. Kate (Kitty) is dramatically altered for the second or third time in the decade, at least two omega-level mutants are exterminated (for how long) and Marvel has done the most transparent wiping of a slate that I may have ever witnessed in 40 years of reading comics.

Orchis's big plan comes to fruition, though that big plan has been so decentralized between all the X-series that the ultimate "oh shit it's happening moment" is as random as it is stunning. We barely get any Hellfire Gala fun before Orchis stomps on everything, murdering mutants, sending many to a mystery destination, and basically depopulating Krakoa.

Fall of X indeed! This volume certainly preludes a big shift in X-storytelling, so I appreciate it for that. It's all just a bit... flat. I miss Jonathan Hickman's method of exploring big reveals through a slightly shifted lens. Only at the end of the book do you truly understand what you've just read. Fall of X is pretty much what it says on the tin.
