The First: A first love you will never forget Book 1 of the Purple Hearted Series

Rate this book
The first novel in the Purple Hearted Series. Zach and Cora’s dual point of view, teacher-student love story.

“Captivating, must-read, brilliant storyline and interesting characters,” Amazon review.

“A romantic story you can get lost in, and I found it hard to put down,” Amazon review.

“A hot love story. I love the smut and the tension between the characters,” Amazon review.

Turning eighteen sucked! I had to return home to England from the UAE because Dad lost his job; great!

So, I did what any newly turned eighteen-year-old with ID does. I went to the pub. Little did I know, I would meet the most gorgeous man there, and share the most panty-wetting kiss with his perfect god-like face.

He was what all my wet dreams were made of.

But the sexy man, with the perfect tongue that was rammed down my throat, turned out to be my new flipping A-level music teacher – insert, dig a hole and drown myself in it.

So, what do I do now? Do I go all up in his face and lick him a little bit more, or do I pretend it never happened? Decisions, decisions!

P.S. Did I mention he has an accent? I'm always a sucker for an accent!

“Frances brings to life the trials and tribulations of falling in love for the first time with a wickedly taunting twist as Cora falls for her teacher. With many raunchy moments and plenty of humour, Frances uses a dual point of view to perfection. We can’t wait for the next instalment,” HB Publishing House.

Blurb!

Whoever said falling in love was easy, lied.
Turning 18, Cora never envisaged her world would fall apart. After an abrupt return to her childhood town, she is thrust back into a life she had so desperately tried to escape. An unexpected meeting, with a handsome stranger, leads to the first kiss of her dreams. The attraction is undeniable. As their lives unexpectedly intertwine, it makes her question everything. Cora tries to navigate this romantic twist of fate. Falling in love for the first time, wasn’t anything like she had ever imagined.

The first love is always the most memorable and this forbidden teacher-student love story will leave you wanting more…

Hi, I am Frances. I have been in Education for the last 12 years either as a primary school teacher, teaching assistant or tutor. I am a mother of two based in Nottinghamshire with my husband and crazy dog!

I love writing books. I have wanted to do it from such a young age, but unfortunately, I had 'that' teacher who said I wasn't great at writing. But fast forward twenty years, and I realised actually, it doesn't matter what that person thought anymore because I love writing. It was getting to that point where I would be reading 1 or 2 books a week and becoming so frustrated with the ending or, wanting something different to happen that I was desperate to write my own and these books exploded out of me!

So I hope you love them as much as I do!

Tropes: Forbidden Love/ Teacher x Student

Dual POV. Inner thoughts. Enough Tension to have to put the book down to take a few breathes to then pick it up and STILL be shocked.

Cora's dad lost her job. Returning home and newly 18 she decided a drink...or maybe a few would be the best solution to fix all her problems. Instead of solving her problems she caused more to herself when she found herself under a gorgeous, godly-sculpted man. They are complete strangers. It's just a one time hook up right? Wrong. He is her A-Level music teacher. That's it. She's screwed.

How can she face him now? Does she pretend it never happened?

The first book in the Purple Hearted series and the first half of Cora and Zach's story, I really enjoyed seeing their journey and NEED the next book so I can find out what happens next. I was a bit worried it would end unsatisfactorily since it's only half of their story but actually it ended at a really nice spot, and while I'm dying to find read the next book I'm not left annoyed by the fact it's been split or feeling like it stopped abruptly.
I know some people don't like the insta-love trope but I really enjoyed their connection and even though it was love at first sight they did chat and learn a bit about each other first. And although there ended up being a lot of secrets still they did have lots in common and seemed compatible in more than just fancying each other. I loved both of our characters, and it was a shame all the circumstances they keep having to face and things keeping them apart. I don't want to give away too much but I did wonder why they couldn't just wait for the main circumstance to pass though, but there did at least end up being other issues too. I loved how Cora dealt with some of the other issues in her life and often acted really mature. She did act childish in some places too and was actually quite obsessed with Zach but I guess at 18 that's exactly what you are: half-adult, half-child. Zach was a mix of sweet and infuriating and I totally get why Cora was annoyed with his behaviour. But I also get why he was so closed off and couldn't start a relationship with her. It was sad that they couldn't just have a discussion, be honest with each other and come up with a plan. I'm hoping book 2 works out better for them with a bit of time and am excited to read it!

Thank you @hyggebooktours @hb_publishing for letting me be part of this tour and reviewing this book. The First is book 1 in the series and I listen to this on audio it is 4 hours and 31 mins long. This is romance genre. I was thrilled to listen to this book and it was a fantastic read. The story has two narratives Cora who has turned 18 years old, who falls for her teacher, Zach, who she didn’t know was her teacher at first and bless him, he has his issues going on. . This is a lovely love story that gets a bit steamy at times and I love the tension between both of the characters who trying really hard not to get involved with one another. I liked the narratives: George Chinook and Alexandra Temple a lot and was hooked on their voices and the storyline. This is the second book I have read by Frances Fleur and I thoroughly enjoy her writing style and I do get hooked in to her books straight the way. The first will not take you long to read or listen to at all. I like the issues that Frances’s Fleur writes about in the story: friendships, family, loss and just day-to-day things that young adults struggle with. The First is an entertaining read that you will fall in love with, not be able to put down. I absolutely loved the characters and bonded with them straight the way. Can’t wait to read book 2 in the series. 5 stars brilliant.

I absolutely adored this read and I need to know what happens next as this is the first half of Coras story.
I really enjoyed being on their journey, love at first sight does exist after all eh! ;)
Although the story has been split I'm eager to carry on, and it doesn't leave the reader dissatisfied either that it's separated.
The love trope isn't for everyone however the connection between them meeting and their relationship is still adorable.
With secrets hidden, there's a lot of similaries between Cora and Zach. I love their characters and feel a sense of bond with them, it feels like I was in the same room as them during the read.
It's saddening of the circumstances they reveal that keeps them away from each other, although the circumstances didn't stop them passing ahead of everything. We sense Zach being a closed off character which does make Cora annoyed in parts of the book.
It's hard to write this review without wanting to tell you all the whole story hehe!
Definitely one for your tbrs of 2025!

I loved listening to That Day by the same author, so I was excited to be delving back into the world of Frances Fluer again, and she didn’t disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I won’t lie I had a wobble with the narrators at first, but that soon passed and I found myself absorbed and invested, so if you decide to listen and have that initial wobble too, trust me, stick with it!

I love the author’s sense of humour, her writing always manages to get a smile out of me, and the balance of smut was perfect too, not to much to make it over bearing, but enough so you can feel the chemistry between the characters.

It didn’t take me long at all to fly through this audio book, and I really didn’t expect that ending, the loose ends I wanted tying up too had me a little huffy, until I realised, there’s a second book, hurrah!

The first turned out to be completely different from when I thought it was going to be. I thought it would be something that I wouldn’t enjoy because of the teacher/student romance, but it wasn’t. The story is told in a dual point of view by Cora and Zach, which gives an insight into their thoughts. Cora was portrayed very accurately as I just turned 18-year-old teenager who was beginning to spread her wings a bit, but still an immature schoolgirl. Zach, even though he was still very young, I’ve been an adult for a very long time and was consumed by his own struggles. I really want to read the sequel to find out what happens next as things were left unfinished in the end. I enjoyed this as an audiobook and it was well narrated.

Heart wrenching story

Cora is wise beyond her years. Meets Zach and immediately falls for him. Much to her surprise, she finds out he is one of her teachers AR her old school she just came back to. She only has a half a semester to finish. Zach is horrified when he sees her in his class knowing he made out with a student. He can't lose his job. He's got too much on the line.

Could really use a better editor, but overall, it was a good story. MC really pissed off, though (hot/cold, shitty radio silence, etc), and there were plot points that came up that were never resolved. I'm assuming they'll be addressed in other books.

The First begins with Cora and her family returning to England after her father loses his job. The story touches on trouble they faced in the UAE, and I would have really liked this to have been explored more. It's a heavy topic, and I felt it deserved some more focus.

Cora is like any other recently turned 18 year old. She thinks she's an adult and knows it all. But she's actually an angsty teen playing at being grown up, which felt a very realistic portrayal of a sixth former.

Feeling very grown up, drinking wine in a pub, she meets Zach, and it's instant love. All the signs were there in that initial conversation that they were about to get a shock at school. At this point, I was worried that this was going to be a very predictable teacher-student forbidden romance. The story does take a few turns that I didn't see coming, but mostly, it played out how I expected.

I really enjoyed the dual POV, flitting between Cora and Zach. However, a lot of Cora's chapters were her immature inner thoughts, I found this got repetitive listening to the audiobook version.

The story ended without a resolution, and I feel invested enough in the story to want to read more of the series.
