Joe Vitale is good at 'borrowing' other people's ideas and insights and stringing them together to write a book. That said, he 'borrows' from the best, so there is always some great nuggets of inspirational wisdom to find in his books.
I did enjoy some of the prayers and the faith and theory behind them. I did however, find the book a little repetitive and seemed to talk quite often about all of his other books and work. overall, I will definite skim back to re read some of the prayers.
I really enjoyed this book. Dr Vitale explains things very clearly and brings together different strands of research and information in a creative way. His explanation of prayer really makes sense. Now I've read it through, I will use it to refer to in specific situations.
“The Secret Prayer” is not a Christian book per se. I don’t say this with any kind of condemnation (I gave the book four stars), but simply as a word of caution to those who may share my Christian faith.
The book is written with a broad audience in mind - monotheists, polytheists, pantheists, and spiritualists. The author is very much in the “New Age” / “New Thought” community.
Therefore, as a Bible-believing Christian, I cannot recommend “The Secret Prayer” for theological instruction on prayer as taught by Jesus and the apostles.
It is respectful of Christians, and even quotes (favorably) several Christian authors and pastors (past and present), but it is not a Christian book per se.
However...
As a citizen of an increasingly secularized United States, I appreciate Joe Vitale’s advocacy for a supernatural reality beyond what our senses can directly experience.
We live in a cynical day and age where people increasingly mock expressions of “thoughts and prayers.” And therefore I appreciate the author’s case that there’s inherent value and merit to better thoughts and more prayer.
What’s more, I found (despite my theological differences with the author) much of the material to be insightful and encouraging.
For those interested in exploring the subject of prayer further, I recommend reading (in addition to the Bible, first and foremost) “Prayer” by Timothy Keller as well as the writings of C.S. Lewis and Philip Yancey.
I would have never thought it, but prayer actually does have a purpose and can be powerful. Prior to reading this book, to me, prayer was just some hokey thing that people that follow organized religions do to try to get the attention of God.
I know God lives inside of me and there is no separation, the author does a great job in showing the power of prayer. What I got out of it is that prayer is just a way to put you affirmations on steroids. Prayer really has nothing to do with the recital of man made jargon, it really can be anything that you want it to be.
Life is all about learning, and I learned a lot about prayer in this book. For anyone that wants to master the Law of Attraction and positive thought, this is a must read!
I like most of Joe Vitale's books. They're easy reads, they make sense and they're not preachy. The prayers were down to earth and really, anyone can do them whenever and wherever. Growing up in a Catholic family, this makes prayer something to look forward to rather than something to dread and hate doing. It puts a little fun in the process. Thanks Joe!
