We're All Monsters Here

Rate this book
When Anna is invited to a secluded retreat full of selfish, greedy humans, of course she doesn’t say no. Not only did she manipulate the CEO of the world’s largest oil corporation, Peter Beyer, into organising the four-day getaway in the first place, but no self-respecting vampire would ever turn down such easy prey. Her weekend gets even better when she meets Saira, one of Peter Beyer’s employees, and they begin a whirlwind affair. Blood and beautiful women are Anna’s idea of a great time.

She should have known it was too good to be true.

Hunters are dangerous, deadly, and dedicated to eradicating vampires. When a group of them turn up at the retreat, Anna must use her centuries of experience to escape their ever-closing net. Will she get out unscathed, or will they finally catch up to her? Will she give into her intense and unexpected feelings for Saira, or will she leave her to burn as she destroys all evidence she was ever there?

A fresh twist on urban fantasy, with an added splash of sapphic romance.

As a child Amy loved reading and writing, so naturally she graduated with a degree in biomedical science and has worked in a microbiology laboratory ever since. Her passion is writing, however, and she turned back to it during her years at university. When she is not writing about surviving apocalypses, vampires feeding on the rich, exploring space, and conquering magic--all celebrating queer love-- she can be found reading or playing games about those very things.

She lives by the sea with her wife and their eighteen year old cat, who still runs around like a kitten.

Amy is the author of the VAMPIRES trilogy WE'RE ALL MONSTERS HERE and SHOW ME YOUR TEETH, with book three due 2025, and the SURVIVORS duology, SURVIVORS and THE SAFE ZONE. She has more works in progress.

6/2025 re-read getting ready to read book two. Lowering my rating to four stars. Still really enjoyed it.

5 Stars - I like my vampires old, snarky and blood thirsty - this book delivers. Throw in sexy, sapphic and smart and I am all yours. Very quick read that I hope is leading to a full length novel.

Oh my, We’re All Monsters Here is an absolute rush of the best kind. Starts out funny as hell, that crazy dry, acerbic humor that only a 539 year old vampire can dish out while still lazily drinking her fill of someone. Then the book catapults headlong into a crash of action and bloodlust. Did I mention this gorgeous vampire has plenty of sexy scenes with another beautiful woman?

Anna is a very old vampire, powerful and sophisticated. She’s about to set off a killing spree at a secluded company retreat when she feasts her eyes on one of the Board Member’s secretaries. Saira is stunning and Anna is immediately entranced. Even though the book is novella length, there is time enough to appreciate the chemistry between the two women. I won’t say any more because there are some good twists as well.

Fantastic read for fans of vampire books, especially if you like heat and humor in yours. I’m looking forward to the sequel but I’ll probably reread this one a few times while I wait.

Anna is officially here! If a lesbian vampire killing and drinking the blood of the CEO and Board of Directors an oil corporation sounds fun, whilst also starting an affair with Saira, one of the employees, this is the novella for you. It's gory, it's spicy, and Anna is witty and competent and morally grey and will win you over.

CW's include blood, violence, gore, death, and sex, with mentions of drug use, sexism, racism, and homophobia.

You should definitely go in reading this with your brain free of any expectations. For myself, all I knew is that the story is about vampires and lesbians. It paid off because the ride was like taking a refreshing shower after a long hike. The narrative may have been explored before but it doesn’t diminish the appeal of We’re All Monsters Here.

The appeal I find in this book is the ease in which the author masterfully choreographed words and guides the reader through a fast paced, action packed scene without breaking a sweat. I’m not limiting her skill on just the action scenes either. The overall animalistic, feral baseness was palpable through most of the characters in the book, and it’s not just the vampire kind.

There is no way this story ends in America. The good thing about vampires, they live forever. So Anna and Saira’s story can go on and on and
on….I hope.

This is a smart, fast-paced novella with gore, sex, and humor. Marsden really captures MC Anna’s different moral compass, and her snarky inner voice perfectly.

In a unique take on vampires, I devoured this story in one sitting. The length is just right for a fast but satisfying read. True to the title, Anna isn’t the only one who is morally grey, and she manages to be likable and entertaining. Her inner monologue ranges from introspective to crackling with wit and really fits the first person POV.

The love scene is well-done, same as the action ones. There is a fair amount of gore, but it’s well-handled and fits well with the overall tone of the story.

I don’t want to give too much away, but the ending hints that this may not be the last we see of Anna!

Recommended!

I received this novella to judge for the SFINCS semi-finals. Opinion is my own, and does not represent that made by the team. I wish this was available in paperback!

This is a sapphic vampire novella that features a likable, yet somewhat despicable main character. Anna is a vampire, over 500 years old, and she finds it best to salve her hunger with the blood of truly despicable people. Her infiltration of CEO Peter Beyer’s company has led her to an employee retreat. She doesn’t intend to let them leave.

I really enjoyed this. It is both a new take on vampires while still holding onto that classic feel. Vampires are day-walkers, the nocturnal antics only a rumor put out to confuse. So Anna sunbathes while reading a book by the pool, yet she still feels like a classic vampire stalking her prey.

For me, I would say this is horror first, with its graphic violence and descriptions. And honestly this just read as really grounded for a huge chunk of it. Anna’s choices in dinner felt kind of like Dexter meets vampirism. But with the vampire heightened strength and speed, as well as the hunters, it still has that urban fantasy feel to it.

The sapphic angle shows Anna finding herself propelled towards Saira. There is in-scene explicit ‘spice,’ which you may know is not my cup of tea, but with the heightened senses and lust, I did feel like it read as warranted for this one. The two of them together feels real, the author does a great job making the reader feel how drawn to each other they are and honestly, I didn’t even think far enough ahead to see the twist.

Overall, this was fast, fun, and a bloody good time. Anna’s use of someone else’s arm as not only a weapon, but a shield in some causes was my favorite part. Personally a 4.5/5*

The author had me at "lesbian vampire goes on a murderous rampage, killing wealth hoarders." And with that I knew I had to read this book.

That's what we were promised, and it's what we got... but there is more too. Even with this short length, there are twists and turns.

Anna appeals to our inner rage at the world - and she relishes in dishing out punishments to those who deserve it. In that, she's a kind of vampire Dexter, removing the moral ambiguity with each kill - telling us precisely why this person had to die so brutally.

This was a fun, tense, horror thriller that was so refined in its simplicity. Can't wait to read part two!

You don't live 500 years without acquiring a wiser and biting (get it?) view of the world. Anna is my kind of vampire getting ready to live the saying "Eat the rich." Prepare yourself for a fast read with lots of blood and lust. Everything a good vampire tale should have. There's surprises in there too. Definitely a favorite vamp read.

I just want to start by saying, I love this book cover. It's so minimalist and is one of the reasons it attracted my eye. The second reason was because of vampires.

Anna is a 500+ year old vampire who is attending a celebratory retreat because her start up was bought by Beyer Corporation. The retreat, however, is just a front because she plans to have a personal feed fest before she burns the place down. She's very much a woman of today in that she's against rich people using their money for bad things and is very much happy to murder everyone. There's only one small complication to her plan: Saira. At their first meeting, she Saira immediately draws Anna in with her beauty, later with her brains and eventually with her body. For some reason Saira just breaks all her vampire rules. However, Saira is not totally what she seems and when things come to light, choices have to be made.

I actually enjoyed this little novella. Anna had some great one liners and I loved being her head whenever Saira was around because her thoughts were completely scrambled. The two of them together was brief but sexy. The only reason I docked a couple of stars is because I found the middle to be a bit boring. Maybe it was too much inner commentary, I'm not sure but I started to look at the percentage read a little too much. The last quarter of the book was the most exciting and definitely made up for the slow parts. I'm on the fence if I'll visit the sequel or not because I felt it was a good enough ending but maybe in the future.

We’re All Monsters Here is a novella about a vampire who goes to a business retreat for billionaires and oil execs and literally eats the rich. The concept is amazing, but even more than that Anna is such a fun character to read she has so many iconic lines! Amy is so good at adding in little plot bombs that made the story even better then its already really intriguing concept. With the way it ended it opened it up for more adventures with Anna and I am so excited to revisit the story and the characters!

This book was reviewed as part of the Speculative Fiction Indie Novella Championship, or SFINCS, which I am judging as part of Team Jamreads. This review contains my honest thoughts and does not represent the opinion or final rating of the team.

A fresh take on the urban fantasy genre from a villain’s perspective, if you count vampires literally eating the rich as villainous, which I don’t. We’re All Monsters Here is the Sapphic rip-roaring bloodthirsty riot you didn’t know you needed.

Characters
Our main character is Anna, a vampire who’s lived through a few hundred years and seen it all. Well travelled and well versed in many cultures, she’s learned what it takes to survive as a vampire in this modern world. That, of course, includes building a portfolio of riches and living comfortably, because if you’ve lived for hundreds of years and AREN’T rich yet, then clearly you’re doing something wrong. Anna is smart and resourceful and knows what she wants. Being a vampire, she’s careful of where she sources her blood from, but she also cares about the environment, as you would if you were practically immortal. Thus, she makes her living, quite literally, but bleeding companies dry. She’s invited to a business trip where she plans to devour the top bosses in charge. But while she’s there, she attracts the charms of Saira, the company’s secretary, and that leads to some flirtatious behaviour and a deadly encounter. Has Anna bitten off more than she can chew? (Sorry, I’m gonna keep rolling with the puns!)

Anna has a plan for taking out a group of greedy business executives who are contributing to climate change while also satisfying her hunger. This doesn’t make her a BAD bad guy, but she is a murderer, placing her in a morally grey category. Personally I enjoyed Anna’s character, though she did make a couple of decisions that I disagreed with.

Setting
Taking place in a posh resort, the hotel is a backdrop for Anna’s activities and gave me Glass Onion vibes. I’ve not read many urban fantasies set in a similar location or as a backdrop for murder, so this was a nice change of pace.

Plot
Anna had her goals all planned out – commit delicious murder by killing off the resort’s guests one by one, cover up the bodies, and then escape fully satisfied. That is, until she falls for Saira, the human secretary. As the two of them flirt back and forth, Anna is left with the dilemma of what to do with her. Let her go? Kill her? Turn her into a vampire? As the story progresses, there’s a few twists thrown into the mix, and we end with a brutal and rather messy conclusion. Throughout, there is a very strong ‘eat the rich’ anti-capitalist vibe. Some readers may find this quite on the nose, and it is. This book doesn’t hold back nor does it take itself seriously.

There is some loving thrown in, and again, it doesn’t hold back here on the detail. If you love your fantasy with a touch of Sapphic smut, then this is for you.

Writing
Written from Anna’s perspective, the writing and dialogue was smooth and a lot of fun, with plenty of sexy snark. Anna has much to say about her vampire history and how capitalism is destroying the world.

Enjoyment
While some people may be put off from the blood, gore, sex, and the heavy anti-capitalist themes, these are the elements I crave in fiction, and thus this book was right up my alley. We’re All Monsters Here is a cathartic explosion of blood that explores what it means to be a real monster, and it’s not the blood-sucking vampires.

Cover Art and Formatting
The cover is very stylishly red and does the job!

We're All Monsters Here is a queer urban fantasy novella, written by Amy Marsden, which mixes a great story of vampires with a short but intense romance. Anna came to this corporate retreat with the idea of getting a feast on the attendants, satiating her hunger; but her plans don't go as expected when she meets Saria.

Marsden quickly introduces us to Anna, her previous story, how she became a vampire and why she decided to feast on the corporate world (somebody said eat the rich, literally?); told in first person, we soon understand the self-confidence and the superiority Anna brings to any place. She's aware of her own power position, making this plan a simple task to execute, but after meeting Saria, Anna gets partly caught by her own lust. An intense and steamy romantic relationship starts between both.
However, the presence of another vampire in the place really messes with Anna's plan; she has always moved with caution to avoid being trapped by the hunters, but suddenly, both are in a dangerous situation as they have attracted them to the place.

From this point, the pace is increased, as the place becomes pure chaos, with both of our vampires having to fight their way out; all with the author still keeping some surprises under the sleeve.

We're All Monsters Here is an intense novella, an interesting twist to the vampire genre adding a romantic plot that is well balanced with the rest. If you like urban fantasy, and want to try a queer and quick read, this would be a splendid choice.

Dark vampire story with a pinch of humor and streams of blood
A vampire wading through blood (literally: if you are squeamish don‘t read this!) and who has at the same time a sense of humor and a moral compass - gimme more!
And there is more: Marsden does an excellent job in this fast paced, action packed novella where the CEO and the board of a corrupt company do get what they deserve: a dream for every woman ever accosted by entitled guys and good riddance to those whose greed destroys the planet. And even better that this vampire is a lesbian. But fear not: this is not about the shiny vampire-knight there is plenty of moral grey in the story to make it truly, err, human. The writing is good, the pace does not falter and the end is well done. More! Please!

Thank you to the author for the ARC. The review is left voluntarily.

Sapphic vampires in the horror genre sounds appealing and right up my alley, but this was not good for me. I struggled through the prose and often found it choppy and unevenly paced in both action sequences and characterization. I did like the smut, but that wasn't enough to save the story. This is 110 pages, but it took me 2 weeks to read because it was so easy to put down and forget about. I'm sad because I was hoping that this would be something I would love. :(

I read this as part of Speculative Fiction Indie Novella Championship (SFINCS, pronounced “sphinx”), which is a yearly competition to recognise, and celebrate the talent and creativity present in the Indie Community. The competition is the sister of the SPFBO and SPSFC and is primarily focussed on novellas. This is the first year of the competition.

Now let me tell you, when I first looked at this I knew absolutely nothing about both the book or the author. As the book was on my list to read for the aforementioned competition, I dove straight in without any biases. However, when I read the blurb and saw the cover I must say that normally there would be nothing that would draw me in and get me to choose this book to read.

I don't mean that to be disingenuous in any way. It's just that it simply is not to my tastes. I mean, when it comes to vampire stories, I can take them or leave them. It's not that I don't like vampire stories, it's just that I have read a lot and I always think that there is nothing that can surprise me anymore. And also, when it comes to these stories, my favourites tend to revolve around the 30 days of night kind of vein, or maybe Brian Lumley's Necroscope series. I mean I have read and totally enjoyed Anne Rice's books and many other besides.

Another thing that would normally send me running away in the opposite direction is the romance aspect. Sorry, I am not a romance kind of bloke and I must admit I do have some stereotypical prejudices when it comes to romance stories. It's not the LGBTQ+ aspect of the story, I might add, it's just that it has a romantic element.

So, I was totally gobsmacked when I really enjoyed this book, with all the things in it that would normally have me running away at full pelt.

I loved the character of Anna and how she manipulates the situation to get everybody to the hotel so that she can feed with wild abandon and rid the world of misogynistic corporate types.

As the story is a first person narrative her snarky view of the world oozes off the pages and I couldn't help but fall in love with her character.

In some ways this reminded me of Chuck Wendig's Double Dead, particularly in the way that the main character is totally amoral in her feeding habits, or the way that she delights in the bloodshed and gore. And there is plenty of bloodshed and gore let me tell you. It definitely kept this old horror hound entertained.

However, it is not only that it is the characterisations of both Anna and Saira that drew me in. There is definitely some elements of the Montagues and Capulets about their romance (I won't go in to details as I don't want to give the game away).

So, yeah! Quite enjoyed this one.

'We're All Monsters Here' was a fast, fun, sometimes gory, often amusing and surprisingly romantic vampire story. I finished it with a satisfied smile on my face and the hope that there's more to come.

The story is told from the point of view of Anna, a five-centuries-old vampire who has a plan to wipe out the morally repulsive board of a fossil fuel company during a weekend retreat at an isolated country house.

I loved the tone of Anna's thoughts. She's self-confident without deluding herself into thinking she's invulnerable. She's genuinely disgusted by the board members she intends to drain but is honest enough with herself to admit that she'll enjoy feasting on them and that she's also going to kill the staff running the country house, although they've done nothing wrong because letting them live would be dumb and anyway, she's hungry.

I liked that Anna had a plan but knew that the plan would almost certainly have to change and she was ready to roll with that.

What Anna wasn't ready for was the deep mutual attraction between her and Saira, a secretary working through the weekend to service the workaholic needs of the Chairman of the Board.

It turned out that that was only one of several things that Anna wasn't ready for. I spent that last third of the book enjoying the tension of not knowing what would happen next or how Anna would deal with it.

I loved the action scenes in the book. They're vivid and bloody and exciting without losing Anna's sense of fun or her mild amusement at the mess she'd let herself get into.

The scene where Anna and Saira finally enjoy each other is one of the best-written sex scenes I've read in a while. It was cliché-free, doesn't shy away from the physical details but doesn't try to turn them into erotica for the reader either. Instead, the scene does a great job of capturing the feeling of two strong characters discovering each other with a wonderful mix of curiosity, surprise, lust, and aggression that ends, eventually, not just in mutual exhaustion but in a change in the relationship between the two women.

The pacing kept the book moving forward relentlessly without feeling rushed and the plot packed a few surprises but what I enjoyed most was simply watching Anna dealing with the unexpected and learning more about herself as she did so. Anna is a scary, inhuman, dangerous but surprisingly likeable vampire who I hope to have the opportunity to see in action again soon.

Blood & beautiful women - A lesbian vampire’s dream.

Anna, a vampire, is invited to a secluded retreat filled with easy prey. Unexpectedly, she meets Saira. And as the romance builds, a group of vampire hunters show up at the retreat. Will Anna get out unscathed, or will they finally catch up to her? Will she give into her feelings for Saira, or will Anna leave her to burn as she destroys all evidence she was ever there?

This was a fast paced gory action novella. Marsden does a great job of entertaining the reader through not only humor but a truly capturing plot.

A must read!

Vampires. Pointy teeth. Night hunters…and if you’re of the generation that grew up with Buffy, ridged features and yellow eyes that let you know who the monster is.

Marsden has taken a look at those classic features, and turned them on their head, dragging her vampires into the modern era. That isn’t to say this isn’t your typical vampire book – we still have the Vampire who has lived centuries, seeing the world change considerably in that time. Although Anna has very much stayed abreast of those changes, rather than loitering in the past. And there is still the hunger for blood, the stalking of human prey and of course the bloody mess that follows. And an age-old conflict between hunters and vampires. However, that is really as far as We’re All Monsters Here tips its hat at the classics, before forging its own fresh take on vampires.

The stories of Nightwalkers and so much of what the world thinks they know about Vampires, are myths and misdirection, fed by the Vampires themselves to keep prying eyes off their activities and throw hunters off the trail. Marsden’s vampires – and especially Anna – are chameleons hiding in plain sight, side by side, with the humans they hunt; using technology, experience, and the lovely murkiness of the definitions of human and monster to exist freely in the light of day…albeit with all the necessary precautions of course.

This take on vampires would have been interesting enough, but Marsden really brings it to life with her main character Anna. A vampire with over five centuries of experience, is a wonderful character, cast in a dozen shades of grey…and plenty of red; and the reason why this book hits so hard. Because Anna’s character voice, full of experience, acerbic wit, glamour and ability to cut through all the pretence and nonsense is captivating; and honestly I would read a book a hundred times the size of this novella just to enjoy more of her way of looking at the world – past and present and of course to watch her dissect her prey in more way that one.

This novella is on the nose at many points, especially as we dive into the hunt, with Anna providing our eyes and ears (and appetite) for the walking meals that are the participants of the corporate retreat that is the setting for this story. This is literally a case of eat the rich, or rather eat the doucebags in power and those who are busy representing the worst of what corporate humanity has to offer – and while it makes it hard to have much sympathy for her prey (there are some exceptions), it doesn’t detract from our investment in Anna’s hunt. Hell, it had me cheering her on.

Which leads to that title. We’re All Monsters Here couldn’t be any more appropriate, and what I love is that Marsden is putting the idea of what it means to be human, and who the monsters really are, under the microscope without adopting a moral high ground. We get to see the best and worst of both sides, and honestly – they’re both a bloody mess – and who is worse? The misogynistic CEO and his minions, or the Vampire who wants to devour them? What about the innocents caught in the crossfire? And the hunters closing in? Marsden rips aside the curtain, and lets us see all the tangled threads, corruption, blood and gore and general mess that is masked under polite day-to-day life and leaves it up to us decide.

That isn’t to say that this isn’t a bloodbath, and firmly falls into the horror category with the amount of blood and gore that fill these pages. Yet, it is finely meshed with entertainment, pragmatism – and honestly some of my favourite moments were the clean up, and how Anna went about her plan for this bloody feast.

And of course, I can’t ignore the romance. To some extent it is head over heels lust, but Marsden captures the attraction between Anna and Saira perfectly, like two pieces of the same whole coming together. And despite the time frame of the story, it is easy to be drawn into the pull they feel for one another, the connection through their conversations, and of course…the steaminess that follows. It also further blurs the line between human and monster, because Anna is otherworldly and captivating to humans, and yet here, she is the one captivated and foolish in the face of that attraction.

The latter part of the book shifts the pacing which had been delightfully spread between anticipation and action, hot flashpoints giving way to quieter reflection, to full throttle. Here Marsden flips the table, with a twist I have to admit I didn’t see coming, and some fantastic action – including a memorable incident with an arm. I don’t want to say too much, as it would spoil the story – but it was a brilliant race to the end of the book, and really was the cherry on the top for me.

We’re All Monsters Here is a delicious treat all wrapped up a bloody parcel. Fast-paced and compelling, this novella is delightfully and unapologetically itself from start to finish, and just a great read. I adored Marsden’s take on vampires and hunters, the dip into morality and the idea of what it is to be a monster without losing the entertaining factor, and the perfect level of spice to finish it off. A fantastic read for anyone who enjoys vampires and wants a modern spin on the classic.

If you were a 500 year old vampire invited to a 4 day weekend retreat for the world's largest oil corporation, you would have a little fun wouldn't you? Anna has a good time with easy prey and unexpectedly falling for the CEO's secretary Saira. But vampire hunters show up to the event...what will Anna do?

This is a great queer urban fantasy novella! I found the pacing to be good and deliciously faster during the end. I thought the take on older vampires was good and the world building very nice for how short it is. I also enjoyed reading a vampire lesbian romance. I am interested to see if this will progress as I did enjoy how the characters were written. CW: Sex and Gore.
