Scripture Study For Latter-day Saint Families: The Doctrine And Covenants

Rate this book
For many families, scripture study is a challenge at best. Too often, it means the same old thing – quickly going around the room with each person reading a verse or two. Isn’t there more that parents can do to bring the power of the scriptures into their families?

Scripture Study for Latter-day Saint Families offers a solid answer: Yes! This power-packed resource book is full of great ideas for family scripture study. Parents will thrill as they open up chapters and discover activities, object lessons, stories, quotations, and insights that will help them lead their families through the Doctrine and Covenants.

The authors write, "Every effort has been made to make this book simple to use, even for children. As you thumb through its pages, you will notice that it follows the Doctrine and Covenants sequentially. Creative teaching ideas have been provided for every section, for Joseph Smith – History, and for the Articles of Faith. In addition to the teaching ideas, historical background is provided for each section, as well as biographical sketches of people mentioned in the Doctrine and Covenants. Object lessons, activities, scripture insights, prophetic statements, discussion questions, stories, and many other learning aids are provided to help your family unlock the scriptures and deepen their testimonies."

Imagine what might happen as a result of studying the scriptures together. As President Ezra Taft Benson promised, "When individual members and families immerse themselves in the scriptures regularly and consistently…testimonies will increase. Commitment will be strengthened. Families will be fortified. Personal revelation will flow."

When Alma the Younger was in the darkest abyss of sin, it wasn’t the words of his seminary teacher that came to his mind but the teachings of his father. And when Enos’s soul hungered, it wasn’t the teachings from a Young Men’s president that he remembered; instead, it was the spiritual teachings of his father. And although the stripling warriors did not doubt, it was not because of what they learned from a Primary teacher; it was the words of their mothers that strengthened their faith.

It is not the job of institutions, including the Church, to teach and raise our children. Primarily, that job belongs to parents. The purpose of this book is tohelp you in that sacred responsibility.

"Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it." - John Taylor

"When individual members and families immerse themselves in the scriptures regularly and consistently.... testimonies will increase. Commitment will be strengthened. Families will be fortified. Personal revelation will flow." -Ezra Taft Benson

"A testimony in our day consists of three things: It consists of the knowledge that Jesus is the Lord, that he is the Son of the living God who was crucified for the sins of the world; it consists of the fact that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God called to restore the gospel truths and be the revealer of the knowledge of Christ of our day; and it consists of knowing that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true and living Church upon the face of the whole earth, the one place where salvation is found, the organization which administers the gospel and therefore administers salvation to the sons of men." -Ensign December 1980, 15

Scripture Study for Latter-day Saint Families: The Doctrine and Covenants goes pretty much verse by verse with ideas, quotes, activities, questions, and more to help your family learn lessons from the Doctrine and Covenants. I used it for religion class in our homeschool with my 10 and 12 year old sons. It worked so well and they learned so much. I highly recommend this for families who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

This family guide helped us create our best year of family scripture study to date. My teens responded so well to the question and answer format, and we all liked the general authority quotes, stories, biographical sketches, and other commentary. We didn't use every suggested activity, as some were intended for families with younger children than ours, but I was impressed with the ways the authors tried to help young minds grasp the Doctrine and Covenants. We have used so many different resources for scripture study over the past 15 years, and this is the one I would recommend most highly.

We used this as a family study guide for the D&C. I thought it provided the right amount of background information and biographical information to make studying the D&C a good experience for our family. Some of the activities and questions suggested were downright silly, but we just skipped over those. Others were thought provoking and appropriate for the ages of our kids (10-17), and seemed to keep them focused on our study of the book. I would recommend this for any family desiring to have a companion study guide to their reading of the D&C.
