Case Studies in Psychotherapy

Rate this book
The fourth edition of CASE STUDIES IN PSYCHOTHERAPY maintains its parallel structure with the Seventh Edition of Corsini and Wedding's CURRENT PSYCHOTHERAPIES. Cases are selected on the basis of intrinsic interest, clarity of presentation, and the extent to which each case demonstrates the basic techniques and methods of the theory being illustrated. This edition retains classic case studies by L. Bryce Boyer, Barbara Sullivan, Harold Mosak, Carl Rogers, Albert Ellis, Irvin Yalom, Arnold Lazarus, and Peggy Papp, while adding two new cases that illustrate psychodrama and experiential psychotherapy.

"Case Studies in Psychotherapy" by Danny Wedding et al.

This book consists of 14 chapters in which different models and schools of psychotherapy are shown in practice in a way that each model is applied to one case or more. There's a book written by the same authors (Current Psychotherapies) in which current psychotherapy models are explained completely and authors claim that it can be used beside this book. However, I haven't read that book and found this book nearly enough for a practical introduction to different models.

Chapters include: psychoanalytic psychotherapy, adlerian psychotherapy, client-centered therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy, behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, existential psychotherapy, gestalt therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, family therapy, contemplative psychotherapies, positive psychotherapy, integrative psychotherapies, multicultural psychotherapy.

Some chapters have dialogues which help to better understanding the models, but some only have a description like a rigid scientific case study. After all, by reading this book you'll understand which models are more suitable for which illnesses and problems.

This book is amazing to either revise your knowledge on psychology or to learn more about human behaviour.

Obviously these case studies have been carefully chosen and the clients are very responsive to psychotherapy but they are real. Also, it is a very holistic book. There are various methods to practice therapy and they are all very interesting, informative.

What I really related to was “Rational Emotional Behavior Therapy” which is an event and belief driven technique that allows you to put a tangible discussion about anything going on in your life. I love it since it is solution oriented, definitely added it to my arsenal.

Read this book during Introduction to Counseling class during undergraduate education. Provides good examples and dialogue interaction.
