A decent biography in a very niche figure, though perhaps one who deserves to be more well known. The biography gives an excellent overview of Fairchild’s life, focusing most on his political career. Since I learned about Fairchild due to his service in the Iron Brigade during the Civil War, I had hoped for more information on that time of his life. Those years are given more of an overview and the author does not go into as much detail as I would have liked.

Still, the biography was interesting and very readable. I learned a lot and it gave me additional perspective not only on the life of Lucius Fairchild but also of the attitudes of many Union veterans after the war and the politics that surrounded them.
