Doctor Who Unbound: A Storm of Angels

Rate this book
What if...
the Doctor really had changed History,
even just the tiniest bit?

1480: Leonardo da Vinci visits the stars.
1508: Vasco da Gama sets foot on Mars.
1585: Francis Drake begins charting the Asteroid Belt.
1588: Earth is destroyed by a storm of angels.

The Doctor was really enjoying his freedom. But now there’s a Temporal Agent on his tail. Gloriana and the President of Gallifrey are not amused. And Susan’s none too well either.

Possibilities, like the Doctor, have a habit of running away with themselves. But who cares, when the jewels are so dazzling…

Marc Platt is a British writer. He is most known for his work with the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who.

After studying catering at a technical college, Platt worked first for Trust House Forte, and then in administration for the BBC. He wrote the Doctor Who serial Ghost Light based on two proposals, one of which later became the novel Lungbarrow. That novel was greatly anticipated by fans as it was the culmination of the so-called "Cartmel Masterplan", revealing details of the Doctor's background and family.

After the original series' cancellation Platt wrote the script for the audio Doctor Who drama Spare Parts. The script was the inspiration for the 2006 Doctor Who television story "Rise of the Cybermen"/"The Age of Steel", for which Platt received a screen credit and a fee.

He lives in London.

An alternate reality? A variant history? An incarnation of the Doctor and/or a timeline that was erased by effects of the Time War? This is a wonderful follow up to the very first in this “series”: Doctor Who Unbound: Auld Mortality. Here the adventures of The Doctor and Susan pick up some time after that story ended. What we get are some wonderful performances and a glorious soundscape. The pacing is excellent up through the third chapter, but gets a little wonky in the concluding episode. In any case, this is delightful sequel to the events from Auld Mortality and is a fine homage and epitaph to William Hartnell’s Doctor and offers a glimpse of what a meddler the Doctor could and might have been. And as always it’s wonderful to have Carole Ann Ford back again.

A Storm Of Angels follows on from the continuity of the previous unbound story ‘Auld Mortality’; in this story having Susan and the alternate first Doctor travelling to an earth with a warped history. This story felt a lot less like its predecessor to me, not only because of its differently structured narrative, but also because it runs for twice the length of previous ‘Unbound’ stories.

The fact that different elements of earth’s past and future are meshed in this screwed up timeline is the hook. As much as that is interesting, it really does play out in a formulaic way which robs that concept of its originality. The Doctor and Susan just progress through events while the villains conspire until appearing, and all is tied up neatly at the end. I wasn’t asking for something grim like ‘Full Fathom Five’ or any of the other high-concept Unbound stories, but something a bit different could’ve added some memorability here.

Geoffrey Balydon and Carol Ann-Ford are great and play so well as a 1st Doctor and Susan, their dynamic being one of the interesting parts of the story; the twists in their character drama being the only real element of surprise to the whole thing. The supporting cast are great and I really engaged with their characters but by part 4 it was obvious that all of this would be retconned so there was nothing to actually care about.

The titular ‘Angels’ are a great creepy background presence, but even once revealed they don’t actually do much. They do their whole luring and inspiring greed schtick but nothing more. Their function in the plot is literally just to create background drama so the character drama between the Doctor and Susan can develop. I will say though, the imagery and their voices are very ominous and create a creepy atmosphere in the build up to their reveal.

A negative in a way is that the time agent following the Doctor for messing with time (who I was never interested in from the start) practically disappears halfway through the story. He serves the sole function of being a point of reference and nothing more. This story doesn’t mesh well with ‘Auld Mortality’; it feels like trying to incorporate the idea that Gallifrey has a much larger presence in the 1st Doctor’s life than he did in the original universe. Doing this means the story is slowed down by lore and continuity that serves no purpose, but does provide one rather great if not confusing twist.

I had no issue through sitting this story but very little made me think this was anything more than alright. I’m impressed at least by the fact that a 2 hour story with so many conflicting factors managed to not bore me. I’m not devastated they didn’t continue this on as a series, but I am glad this Doctor got a second story.

The Unbound range is an incredibly clever idea for a series of audios and I'm glad to see Big Finish have recently brought it back despite mixed reviews. I've been meaning to give A Storm of Angels a go for a while now, so I finally decided to listen to it.

What if The Doctor decided to travel through history, changing it to be better? The Doctor and Susan have been enjoying their adventures but a time agent is on their tail. Susan is unwell and The Tardis is stuck in a timeline created by The Doctor. The people of the Elizabethian era have discovered technology and space travel beyond their wildest dreams. On a ship traveling back to Earth, a precious cargo of jewels is waiting with angels inside of them...

Marc Platt has written an outstanding story that is clever, funny, unique, terrifying, and just really fun. It's a story with really cool concepts and world-building along with some terrific characterization. Geoffrey Bayldon and Carol Ann Ford get on well like a house on fire, they are amazing together and really capture the vibe of their respective characters.

Overall: A brilliant story that's actually pretty underrated, honestly more people should give this a go, it's spectacular! 10/10

The Unbound series takes key points in the Doctor's history and ask, What if? In A Storm of Angels the question that is posed is What if the Doctor had changed history?
In 1500's Earth Sir Francis Bacon flies a space pirate ship, serving the queen of England, whose "palace" is a giant space station. There is something wrong with Bacon's cargo and the Doctor and Susan (Carole Ann Ford) must put things right... and there are surprises along the way!

A sequel to Auld Mortality that is double the length. Somehow, I didn’t find it as interesting.

I had a bit of a hard time with this. My brain kept picturing "Pirates of the Caribbean".

There's two stories here. The Time Lord story and the Angels in the mirror. This feels like a new Who episode with a classic who cast. The story just overcomplicates itself.

"A Storm of Angels", is a double CD release bringing back Bayldon and Ford as the Doctor and Susan; the Doctor, having decided at the end of "Auld Mortality" to go travelling after all, has been busily changing history and runs into Sir Francis Drake in the middle of the asteroid belt. At first I wondered if there was really much merit in what seemed basically yer standard alternate history, without much apparent need for the Doctor's alternate history as well. But then I realised that Platt had cleverly built the plot around both endings to "Auld Mortality", even though they are contradictory; and it finishes rather nicely. As with all long stories (it is about as long in play time as a TV six-parter would have been, though split into only four parts on the CDs) it could probably have done with a bit less padding.

In this alliterative Doctor story, What would earth and the world be like if the Doctor took Leonardo Di Vinci on a couple of space trips. Would the great early explorers be space farers? Would the earth be invaded by gems that look like Angels. Find out.
