From the New York Times bestselling author of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind comes a powerful collection of spiritual activities that we can use every day in order to create miracles in our lives. Through daily meditations and exercises, Borysenko helps us to let go of fear and realize the light of peace.
This is the best book of daily reflections I've found. Each day you are given a reflection to think about along with a prayer or meditative practice. What makes this book really meaningful is the range of sources and experiences that Joan Borysenko draws from, Christianity, Judaism, Native American spirituality, and Islam. There are also themes for each month; The Foundations of Spiritual Practice, lovingkindness, courage, freedom, gratitude and the divine feminine, miracles of light, creativity, vision and purpose, spiritual maturity, dreams, intuition and the inner life, grieving, forgiveness and completion, and kindling the light within. She provides a great deal of information on archangels and how to seek their guidance and protection at different times of the year. The resource section at the back contains lists of books, spiritual music, along with many wonderful breathing and meditation exercises. If you want just one book of daily reflections this is an excellent choice.
This book - if you can call it that - is a phenomenal companion! If I could give it more 🌟🌟🌟's I would! My Gran got a little book every month called the 'Daily Word' & 'Pocketful of Miracles' is that on steroids. A daily/yearly treat - you finish on December 31st thinking okay, yet January 1st (as you start it again) it's like a new read & lessons flow as 'you' are ready to receive them. From the beautiful 'Mandela's, the prayers & the artful instructions on (did you know there's a right way to breath) how to 'Meditate' & the meditations themselves that are many & varied, as well as the lovely 'Loving-Kindness Metta' (*which I include below) alone is worth opening this 'powerful,' yet unassuming little wonderous, wonderment!
May I be at peace May my heart remain open May I awaken to the light of my own true nature May I be healed May I be a source of healing for all beings
Loving-Kindness Metta *
Which by a 'simple' change of focus can be said for friends, family, loved ones (of all stripes) & the World 🌎 - sweet:) Brilliant, just brilliant. Joan Borysenko adds humor, insight & a bit of fun - along with centuries old philosophy & wisdom. I'd urge 'Get' it for yourself or as a gift (esp to the young people in your life) it's more than worth it & you will find treasure even in your 15th year of delightful reemergence.
DNF (just due to the nature of the book being a daily devotional), but it was okay. It means well, but for me it was simultaneously overarching and vague, and a bit too woo-ey for me. It’s designed like the traditionally-Christian devotional, except it’s not Christian, it’s instead trying to appeal to all agnostics. It’s not bad though, the right message is there.
I have read this through six different years and gain from it each time. I still use much of what I learned in my daily devotions and meditations. I have bought copies for my husband, daughters and several friends. Highly recommend it.
Best of its kind, not trite or sickeningly sweet, or overly religious. Perfect blend of story, meditation, and spirituality. This book sets the tone for my day with a reading each morning.
This book has expanded my understanding of soul, spirit, life and wisdom. Every few years I use it again as a daily devotional but it is always close at hand for ready reference.
