A Distant City: Images of Urban Experience in the Medieval World

In a remarkable synthesis of iconography and social history, Chiara Frugoni addresses the changing concept of the city as revealed in visual and literary images throughout medieval Europe. By exploring the sentiments expressed through the image of the city, she traces how notions of civic identity became fused in the consciousness of the people and in the daily flow of their lives. An examination of cities depicted in early medieval illustrations suggests a widespread feeling of insecurity, often conveyed through networks of bare walls marking the boundary between order and chaos. Analyzing chronicles and other historical texts, Frugoni shows that the strong relationship between cities and their bishops led to a consciousness of the city as a meeting place rather than simply a place to live under protection. As the religious and protective roles of the city diminished during the high Middle Ages and early Italian Renaissance, a secular ideology emerged, finding its expression, for example, in the Lorenzetti fresco in Siena, a political manifesto offering a reassuring view of Good Government in the city.

Chiara Frugoni è stata una storica italiana, specialista del Medioevo e di storia della Chiesa.

Figlia del medievista Arsenio Frugoni, si è laureata nell'Università degli studi di Roma "La Sapienza" nel 1964 con una tesi dal titolo "Il tema dei tre vivi e dei tre morti nella tradizione medievale italiana", dove già si fa strada la ricerca di un metodo di lavoro che tenga in uguale conto testi e immagini, metodo che considererà sempre importante nella convinzione espressa che «l'immagine parla».

Ha sposato Salvatore Settis nel 1965: dal matrimonio sono nati tre figli. Nel 1991 è passata a nuove nozze con Donato Cioli.

Nel 1965 è stata ammessa al Diploma di perfezionamento alla Scuola Normale Superiore, e nel 1974 è approdata all'insegnamento universitario; nel 1980 è chiamata a Pisa a ricoprire la cattedra di Storia medievale. Vi è rimasta fino al 1988, per poi trasferirsi presso l'Università di Roma Tor Vergata, dove ha insegnato fino al 2000, anno in cui rassegnerà volontariamente le dimissioni dall'insegnamento.

Il nucleo principale della sua ricerca verte intorno alla figura di Francesco d'Assisi, cui ha dedicato libri tradotti all'estero, e numerosi articoli. In particolare ha approfondito il modo in cui le istituzioni hanno contrastato l'azione di Francesco d'Assisi.

A book full of interesting observations and conclusions but also pretty chaotic and scattershot in its approach. Perhaps it's an issue of translation, but its readability is pretty low even for an academic book.

Still, it's a great subject and there's some fun stuff to be found if you like medieval Italian history.
