The Devil Bats get their first real victory as a team in an exhibition game against a school of hard knocks who now owe their souls to the quarterback Hiruma. This victory gives the team the push it needed to put their recruitment in a whole new level; for the first time, a dozens of aspirants want to join the team. But, they all must face the "tower of hell" entrance trial.

The new receiver figures out Eyeshield 21's identity pretty quickly, but the female manager gives her best impression of Lois Lane. The manga-ka is unsubtly riffing the Clark Kent-Superman dynamic here.

Il semblerait que je ne sois jamais allée très loin dans l'animé à l'époque parce que je ne me souviens pas des nouveaux personnages introduits ici...

More team members yay! I love that now Hiruma can get more complex gameplans on the fields, it's great to see the team grow. Also love the recruitement and selection method.

Sometimes, I hear people complain about football because "it's so simple." which I never understood, because there are a lot of rules and nuance to the game. There are a ton of positions, there are a lot of limits on how you can move or how you can act, and that means the slow, piecemeal way this series is building its team is perhaps the only way it could be done and still make sense to people who aren't already familiar with the sport.

In the wake of adding a receiver to their team, the Devil Bats have an exhibition game against a nearby school of punks, the Chameleons. While this team will stick around for much of the manga, the only person here you really need to get to know is Habashira, their captain. He loves football, and he tries to cut an intimidating figure. but as the team is coming together, his on-field ability to scare them has been somewhat hampered.

Also, as mentioned above, there are a lot of ticky-tack rules and moving parts in football. So in this game, you can really feel the way the addition of that new position has opened up the field, giving Hiruma way more options.

But speaking of new options, I loved the second half of this volume more than the first. Because after their exhibition game, to show off the team and the sport, the Devil Bats are recruiting! The two-part method includes an interview, then a trial of determination and endurance. Quite a few interesting characters pop up, including a small but mighty guy who wants to be Kurita's apprentice, a bookworm who hasn't gone out for sports before and a brash guy who thinks he can learn a thing or two from Hiruma.

I kind of love the challenge that Hiruma sets to the participants. It's hellish, but in the exact way you'd expect from him. What I didn't expect was what he did right at the end. but what can I say -- Hiruma loves skill, but he's also a big fan of perseverance and grit. :D

Eyeshield 21: Intimidation continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (26–34) of the on-going manga series.

The tankōbon opens with Ryokan Kurita, the largest and strongest lineman of the Deimon Devil Bats, caught the Ha-Ha Brothers trying to retrieve blackmail pictures that Yoichi HIruma took of them to blackmail them to playing for the Devil Bats.

The Devil Bats easily dominate the game because Rui Habashira, linebacker and captain of the Zokugaku Chameleons, is trying to focus on Eyeshield's runs, but they did not expect Monta or even Tetsuo Ishimaru to be playing, who was new recruits from the baseball and track teams respectively. In the end, the Devil Bats win by 46–28. Since the Chameleons lost the bet and could not pay the money they wagered, they became Yoichi Hiruma's slaves.

The next day, the Devil Bats conducts interviews for new members, and Yoichi Hiruma gives them a test to weed down the applicants – a marathon run to the top of Tokyo Tower with bags of ice and many obstacles. In the end, Sena Kobayakawa, Monta, Manabu Yukimitsu, Daikichi Komusubi and the Hah Brothers pass the exam.

This tankōbon is written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. For the most part, I really liked the story and how the Devil Bats are forming – mostly from the schemes of the captain and quarterback – Yoichi Hiruma.

All in all, Eyeshield 21: Intimidation is a wonderful continuation to a new series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

Enjoy banget bacanya, apalagi tuh gambar-gambar lucu di antara pergantian bab menghibur sekalii 🤣 Yah ada sih perasaan aneh selama liat beberapa gambar utk karakternya yg masih ga bagus2 amat (aku syok liat kemunculan pertama Yukimitsu hiks), Tapi namanya juga awal2 volume yaa belom berkembang teknik artnya, jadi ga terlalu mengganggu.
Trus juga mungkin saking seringnya aku baca ya dulu, volume ini jadi ga selucu yg aku bayangin dan rasain kyk dulu. Aku ngerasa pacenya jadi lebih cepet?? Padahal sama aja.... ya itu deh, kayaknya emg karna jd bagian yg sering aku baca dulu karna suka scene recruitment anggota Deimon yg lucu parahh 🙃✌️

3 ESTRELLAS ☆☆☆

[NOTE: I’m rereading this entire series; I read it for the first time probably around a decade ago.]

I love the "recruitment" arc! I used to think that the pacing of ES21 was a bit slow, but upon a re-read it's clear that it's so that we have a working understanding of CURRENT characters so that we're not overwhelmed as more are introduced. I love this arc since our cast of characters is growing so that we have a more legitimate roster of players.: Yukimitsu, Komosubi, and of course, the "Hahhh" Brothers ... all fun characters with interesting dynamics.

The test is absolutely unhinged and brutal; fitting for the quarterback who designed it!

(And I love Hiruma's choice at the end of the test... a lovely humanizing moment for him there).

We get a taste of Seibu in this volume, as well as the reminder that Oujou isn't completely untouchable...

2025 reread:

Mamori with a flamethrower… slay… Hirumamo still has me by the throat after all these years lmaoooo

Also, Monta is adorable in this volume… he looked a bit wonky last volume, but Murata has really gotten into the swing of things with him here and he’s a big cutie patootie

Kurita crying while eating the cream puffs broke my heart into a million pieces… and the introductions for sweet baby Yukimitsu… and tiny hamster Komusubi… Wahhhhh…

the final ice cube for Yukimitsu… I hadn’t noticed that the first time I read it I’m gonna cry wtf his big smile and his gleaming forehead 😭😭😭

And my goat the kid with that last second introduction… oh i fucking love eyeshield!!!!!!!!

Not a fan of the chameleon team's whole gimmick being how they'll go on the field and just... beat up their opponents with kicks and punches and nut shots. Doesn't prove a whole lot. But our team gets some new members and fills out more of the cast, yay. I think the over-the-top "literally shoots guns at people to motivate them to play high school football" style doesn't fit me but I guess that's how this series is going to continue.

Really fun volume, we get two new characters which is good, plus these two new guys already have character as soon as we meet them, we know what they’re about and what they bring to the table, the game played was fun but I know there can be better ones. The bullies from the first chapter are also members which has potential for them to be better. The recruitment game was pretty fun too. Then you get the plot twist of the Knights about to lose in the final.

Sena and his teammates must play the Zokugaku Chameleons, and he's a bit creeped out by how scary that linebacker, Habashira, can be. But he's faced Shin--how scary can this guy be?--and the exhibition match ends satisfactorily. Hiruma has managed to blackmail Sena's bullies into being linemen, but they still don't have enough regular players, so Hiruma begins recruiting again. Now that there's some interest in the Devilbats, he creates a test--the Tower of Hell. Those who pass--and passing means getting to the top of the stairs with your bag of ice before it melts--get to sign up for the team. Several new and interesting players show up, including Komusubi (who is tiny and doesn't say much but wants to be a lineman), Yukimitsu (who has never played sports but wants to do something other than study, and has to be helped to get by), and of course Sena and Monta (and Sena's three bullies, the Hah brothers). They have a team! And when they go to watch the continuing matches in the tournament they're already out of, they are surprised when they find that the Ojo White Knights are playing the Seibu Wild Gunmen and they're actually losing. . . .

The Tower of Hell was hilarious, with many of the obstacles the characters had to get by caused by Hiruma harassing them as they tried to climb. Ever try to get up stairs with a bag of ice when a guy with a flamethrower is melting your ice? The Hah brothers being in the challenge was a little strange, but their pride was at stake; their evolution from bullies to actual team members is interesting too. This had a lot of wackiness in it, but I thought the ending was intriguing, and wanted to know more about these Gunmen who could actually give Ojo a run for their money.

This volume of Eyeshield has the new additions to their team square off against the punkish Chameleon team. The ace team linebacker has a knack for breaking the O-line and sacking the Devilbat's quarterback. Sena and the team learn about a the play-action run/pass fake to dupe the adapting defense for the win. This volume features lots of new players to the team, and a fun new opponent in the Chameleons, who may be my new favorite opponent so far. The play action development shows progression in the complexity of Gridiron Football strategy which is much appreciated from this American football aficionado. Another really fun volume in this addicting series.

This remains one of my favorite manga series - my weakness is still most definitely sports manga, and in a manga series with characters so dynamic and fun like the characters in this one, there's no doubt that this was going to be one of my favorites.
