Emergency! is a great book to allow children to discover and learn about the different kinds of emergency vehicles and how they help through fun little rhymes on each page.
The children really enjoyed this book and wanted to spend a while on each page taking in what we had read and looking at the scenes that we come across in the story. The illustrations are fun to look at and there is so much detail but it's not too much that it's overwhelming. The vehicles are the main focus on each page and the children were fascinated by what each of them did. They particularly liked seeing the fire engines and the police.
The story is written in a rhyme with some repetitive words that are great for getting the children involved in the story. It's nice that each vehicle has a page where it is explained in a short rhyme as it gives us a chance to get to know each one, some the children know well and some they've not seen so often.
We really enjoyed this book and the children loved seeing all of the vehicles, perfect for vehicle fans and great to show help is on the way when you need it.
I have lost count of the number of times I have read this book on SBC2. There was quite a few children who were particular interested in the emergency services and would spend a long time reading this book with me and picking out opportunities for counting (firemen) and creating cross curricular links with painting and outdoor building (we built a fire engine with boxes). All inspired by this book!
This was an interesting book about different community helpers and what they do! It’s educational for kids without being too wordy. My kids enjoyed this book! It’s cute and informative!
Emergency! By Margaret Mayo (Picture Book) I read this book to my daycare children who love vehicles. As a daycare provider I appreciated the wide variety of verbs that the text includes. We had a lot of fun reading this exciting book! The children were able to look at the illustrations and tell me different colors and different vehicles that were in the pictures. I love how it introduces emergency vehicles that he sees on the road and explains that "help is coming!" And the book also tells you the different sounds that the vehicles make. This book covers a lot of different vehicles so if you have a child that has and obsession with vehicles such as fire engine, ambulance, tow truck, etc. This book will be a great pick for them. I love to make and activity out of every book that I read with my daycare children so I made a sensory box that has different types of vehicles in it to pull out of the box while reading it for children can observe and learn about the different types of vehicles. Sensory boxes help young children to get a better understanding about what you are reading to them. I would recommend this book for children 2-6 years. I also use this book for fire safety.
This book would be a great read aloud for younger students. I know some of the standards for my practicum kindergarten class focus on community helpers and this book would be great for introducing the subject. It has the sounds the different transportation vehicles make on their way to help people in need and it explains what they do. If they ae water rescue, land rescue, air rescue, etc. It has bright illustrations and a positive writing style to help the studnets understand that they are people just like them who help and save lives.
This book helps students to learn what different emergencies are and the different people that help out during emergencies. Children are able to see what policemen, firemen, and paramedics do and how they help the community. This would be a great book to use in a kindergarten and first grade classroom when it is time to teach about community helpers.
I read this book and thought it would be great to read to your kindergarden or first graders! It is a great representation in the lower grade levels of what community helpers are and look like. It would be a great children's literature integration within a lesson.
What a great way to share what community helpers look like. As this is a state standard, showing what community helpers are in second grade, this would be a great anticipatory set to read aloud to students. Highly recommend this to any lower grade level teacher!
I LOVE this book. My kids ask for it all the time, and I think it's great, upbeat look at emergency workers and vehicles. The pictures are fun and the rhyming text is easy to follow.
My 21 month old son really likes this book, which depicts various emergency scenarios (pleasantly sanitized for toddlers, of course) and their corresponding emergency vehicles.
