"We resent the thought that anything can please us when someone we love is no longer here to share the pleasure with us, and we almost feel as if we were unfaithful to our sorrow when we find our interest in life returning to us." (290).
I reread this enduring, coming of age classic as an adult for the first time since I was a teenager- and I was startled at how incredibly touching and timeless Anne Shirley's story is. One of the pluckiest heroines in literature, and definitely one of the luckiest- her life at the bucolic Green Gables in Prince Edward Island with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert still holds up.
I grew up on the Kevin Sullivan miniseries starring Megan Follows (Anne), Colleen Dewhurst, (Marilla); Richard Farnsworth (Matthew), Patricia Hamilton (Rachel Lynde), Jonathan Crombie (Gilbert) and Schuyler Grant (Diana) by watching it on PBS.
Anne was a character I related to: With her love of literature and imagination, I could say she was one of the characters that I admired enough to want to become an educator, someone who shaped my imagination. Gilbert Blythe was one of my first literary boy crushes, and Jonathan Crombie was super cute and mischievous as Gilbert in the series. Matthew and Marilla were the parents I never had and wished that I did. I had plenty of girlfriends who were "bosom" friends to me- variations of Diana Barry.
I didn't realize until now that Anne Shirley is among the greats of literary characters who overcome adversity and bleak home lives, with the help of adults who help them become the way they should be. There's Mary Lennox from "The Secret Garden", David Copperfield, Dorothy Vale among some of the classic coming of age characters of the late 19th century to the early 20th century. These characters all have a kinship with Anne Shirley- except Anne luckily escapes much of the abuse that they've endured. Instead her support system is impressive and touching, and they all believe in her.
I have a special place in my heart for Marilla Cuthbert. Crusty, touch and lonely- Anne becomes the daughter she never had, and she's a wonderful foil and support for Anne, "I don't fancy her style myself," admitted Marilla, "but it's that or keeping her ourselves, Matthew. And since you seem to want her, I suppose I'm willing—or have to be. I've been thinking over the idea until I've got kind of used to it. It seems a sort of duty. I've never brought up a child, especially a girl, and I dare say I'll make a terrible mess of it. But I'll do my best. So far as I'm concerned, Matthew, she may stay" (83).
In this fraught 2024 election cycle between Vice President Harris and President Trump, reading "Anne of Green Gables" is a healing salve that is hopeful and sweet. But there is the pessimistic person in me that has a feeling this is a book that will be banned if not already.
Love 🥺 so precious and has really helped me try to appreciate the things in my life and see the good. Also the imagery was so beautiful. If I could live in a little book world please send me there 😭 and Anne and Gilbert at the end ugh😭 adorable
Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert wanted to adopt an orphan and they expected that he would be a boy so he's going to help Matthew run the farm. Instead of a boy arrived a thin, red-haired, freckled girl: Anne Shirley. After some initial doubt Anbe became part of the family of Matthew and Marilla being very kind and useful. A story recommended to readers of every age.
I read this four times because I had to. I understand why this book became a classic and is important in the history of literature, but it`s not for me. I appreciate its literary value but it doesn't mean I have to like it. However, it is refreshing to read something for young adults that doesn't contain sex, violence, lgbt nonsense and race.
Not as bad as the 1934 movie, but not by much. This was written in 1964 and has the language and sexism to prove it... as well as several Americanisms that I think L.M. Montgomery, in her disdain for the 1919 film, would not approve of. The play is set in "the present day" - i.e., 1964 - and there is no way around that without changing the dialogue. There is no mention of Anne having her iconic red hair. Miss Stacy is given an inconsequential mention. Matthew isn't shy, but rather a Man who has been pitifully steamrolled by Marilla's dominating bitchiness--he's not afraid of women, but is forbidden from speaking to them. Diana does not get drunk, but rather is cut with Anne's penknife. Schooling is unimportant; Anne does not go off to Queen's. Matthew does not get sick or die, nor does Marilla lose her sight; Anne does not sacrifice her education and Gilbert does not sacrifice his schoolmaster post. With all of these cuts the playwright finds time to add three new characters, one of whom plays a Deus ex machina to the bank failure. Suffice to say that Anne's maturation and the changes she makes among the populace are trifling matters in light of turning this classic coming-of-age story into a dated and shallow comedy.
4.a) Matthew was living with his sister Marilla. They wanted to adopt a boy who can help their work. But a girl came to their house accidentally. They decided to live together. The girl is Anne who has a lot of freckles. She also has a red hair. Her character is little strange. But she is kind and cheerful. But she often get into troubles.
B) I like the scene when Anne changed her hair color. She didn't like her hair. Red hair. Because many people made fun of her hair color in school. One day , a man came to her house and sold liquid of a bottle. He said it change your hair color from red to black. So she used it. But her hair turned green. . . Big accident.
5. I liked this story. It is famous story . But I had never read it . Anne grew up not only her body but also her mind thanks to her foster parents. She often get into troubles . It's funny and so strange. At the end of the story she became a good woman . This story made my heart hot.
1.level 2/OXFORD 2.5/22-20min,5/24-10min,5/26-30min 3.Anne, parents, home, school, red, dream, friends 4.a) My favorite scene is the " More trouble for Anne". Anne got into the boat, and Unfortunately the boat had a hole, and water was coming. She got impatient, and somehow she tried to escape from the boat. b)I like this scene. After water was coming into the boat, Anne could move on the branch of tree. After that Anne waited for help and few minites later Anne's classmate, GILL was coming to help. I was imppessed with their friendship.
5. I love this story since when I was child. I like especially main character, Anne. Anne is a young girl who has no parents. Many times Anne was in trouble, but she had never given up and smiled. She is funny person I think. If I were her, I gave up. So I respect her strong mind and I want to be a girl like her.
1. Level2/ Oxford 2. 7/16= 40minutes; 7/17=60minutes 3. Anne, girl, farm, home, orphan, housework, life 4 a. Anne who has red hair came to the Green Gables, and she started to live there with Matthew and Marilla. Anne's parents died when she was a baby, so she had lived with various families and she was poor. She was forced to do housework and she went to school normally. One day, her friends introduced her to a man. His name is Gilbert who is older than Anne. At the end of story, Anne marry him and they live happily. 4 b. This first half of the story is sad, because Anne was forced to do housework. But the second half of the story is happy, because she met future husband and her life became well. 5. It takes a little long time because this book has some difficult expression for me. But this is interesting.

1. Oxford, level 2 2. 5/12=90 min. 3. Matthew, Marilla, Green Gables, Anne, School, Diana, Gilbert 4. a: You're very good at making mistakes! b: This is Marila's word and I agree with her. Anne is really good at making mistakes, but she is positive. So, I can't hate her. 5. I have read some series of Anne. I like this series but this book is thin so each stories are short. I wanted to read each stories longer. However, I like Anne's personality because she is always positive, but sometimes she is depressed. She has a rich imagination and her imagination is overdoing sometimes, but these are interesting.
