Drawing as a Sacred Activity: Simple Steps to Explore Your Feelings and Heal Your Consciousness

Rate this book
Like many people, Heather Williams was not encouraged to embrace her creative side during childhood and as a result turned her back on part of her inner life. Beginning with an explanation of how she reclaimed her artistic impulses, this book invites readers to explore their own resources for creativity. With a·step-by-step approach to personal development in the tradition of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and The Artist’s Way, it teaches not only the technical skills needed to draw but also ways to delve into our inner lives for healing and inspiration. The book is divided into three Pencils and Perception (observing and drawing what is seen in the physical world); Crayons and Consciousness (drawing the interior landscape); and Ink and Intuition (drawing on one’s intuitive wisdom). With 300 black-and-white illustrations, this is an easy, fun way to unlock creativity and unleash the spirit.

What a facinating book!

I absolutely loved this book. First off it does teach you a little bit about how to draw. It taught me a new way of drawing I had never learned before. How refreshing. How to draw wasn't the point though. It's main focus was what I would call intuitive art. A favorite subject of mine. The excersises were very much in depth and some of them were practically therapy and some even were trauma work.

I would be careful with that if you don't have a therapist. That's the only negative about this book is that it goes a little far in how it guides you theraputically. Some of the teachings and ways it guides you to think are pretty heavy and you might not agree with all of it. Especally if you have some trauma or family issues. The farther along the book went the heavier it got for me and I couldn't even do all the excercises because it was just too much.

It is deeply personal and I don't think everyone would have this experience working through the book. Much of it seemed dated and we read a little bit about the author. But I would love to own this book someday. I borrowed it from the library. It really encourages creativity and intuition. But almost all of the exercises are to be done with the none dominate hand. Which is not how I prefer to work.

Excellent book even if it's just for the instruction on how to draw at the beginning.

Brilliantly profound

Heather expresses an authentic connection with the ever practical divine. Destined to be a timeless classic of art. I am familiar with the source and I am impressed by this authentic expression
