Rose Estes is the author of many fantasy and science fiction books, including full length novels and multiple choice gamebooks. After contributing extensively to TSR, Inc.'s Dungeons and Dragons Endless Quest series (of which she wrote the first six, as well as others later down the line), she wrote her first full length novel, Children of the Dragon (1985). She continued to write for TSR by writing six volumes in a series of Greyhawk novels. She contributed to other series, but continued to write books and start series of her own that, like Children of the Dragon, take place in a fantasy or science fiction world created by her own imagination. She also wrote the Golden Book Music Video Sing, Giggle and Grin.
Since the synopsis for this book is inexplicably in Spanish, I will explain that it's my favorite Choose Your Own Adventure, D&D version, and I believe the only one with a female lead.
YOU have heard of an evil plot, and must hide out in a magical circus! What makes this one stand out is both the unusual magical circus setting, and that it's further divided into three possible adventures: with the freak show (surprisingly non-offensive), with the acrobats, and with the animal tamers. The animal tamers is the best. They have blink dogs, gryphons, pegasi, and other magical beasts.
This book warmed the cockles of my magical beast-loving thirteen-year-old heart. Except for the parts where I got eaten by a living net.
Yes! One of the two awesomest Choose Your Own Adventure Books that I've ever read (The other? Revenge of the Rainbow Dragons). Rose Estes was the only author to tackle the Endless Quest series for Dungeons and Dragons until it was obvious that this was a marketable endeavor. She pushed out books 1-7, Circus of Fear (9) and Dragon of Doom (number 13) as her first books written for any publisher.
The idea of an author's first time resulting in a series of seven consecutive books published within a year boggles my mind. The fact that TSR gave one questionable author this much control... weird. At some point I'll need to pick up the 'Saga of the Lands' series, if only to see if her adult literature was as inspired and trapsy as her geeky 13 year-old literature was.
I don't know what it is about this book. Maybe it's a symbol from my childhood or it's what's fun about reading. Maybe both. Either or it's always brought a smile back to my face. Memories.
I enjoyed reading this book very much when I was in Jr. High. I had recently become acquainted with Choose-your-own-adventure books, and had enjoyed several, especially those affiliated with Dungeons and Dragons. But this was the first with a female protagonist. Since I am female myself, I was able much more to relate to the protagonist, and put myself into the story with greater ease. The story itself was fun, and I enjoyed the different possible paths the protagonist was able to take.
Lo leí de niña. Ese estilo de poder elegir cómo se desarrolla la historia te da un libro diferente cada vez que lo agarras Me parece genial para incentivar a los niños a leer Lo volví a leer de adulta y si es bueno
While set in the Dungeons and Dragon’s Greyhawk universe, this book doesn’t focus on missions or quests. Instead it is a simple tale of a young girl and boy (of whom you play the role of Laela) who are very poor, and their visit to a circus.
It is here that their interference with one of the circus owner’s prized animals leads to them owing money and having to work it off. While doing so they stumble onto a plot to take over the Kingdom.
The book splits off into three paths early on (depending on what type of act you choose to be when forced to join the circus) and each is refreshingly different enough to hold the interest of the reader.
One thing I liked about this is that whether you chose the animal trainer, sideshow, or acrobats, there were interesting plot lines with each of them. The book made a pretty good impression that stayed with me.
