From the 5th century, Germanic peoples from the North Sea areas of Europe began settling and establishing kingdoms in the Eastern parts of Britain. This title reviews the main events of the period 400 to 1066 and the legacy left by the Anglo-Saxons to later centuries.
An accessible and concise introduction to the history of the Anglo-Saxons, providing a chronological outline of key events from the fifth to the late-eleventh century. Slightly surprised that the author didn't dispel the Victorian myth of King Alfred burning the cottager's cakes - and I personally thought she downplayed the impact of Norman rule on English society - other than those minor gripes, a recommended read.
This is a slim edition so I was surprised by the depth of understanding of the events, New connections were made for me that explained what had been inexplicable; the killing of King Edward to put Aethelred on the throne.
