One strike away-a painful reminder to Red Sox Nation of the 1986 Red Sox team that, until the 2004 World Series champions, came the closest to delivering that elusive trophy back to Boston for the first time since 1918. It was a team constructed by Lou Gorman, who was in the early stages of a 10-year run that produced three playoff teams, plenty of excitement, and more than its share of controversy. In Lou One Pitch from Glory, he shares rare and private storeis about constructing a team in one of the most demanding markets int he world.
Too many typos, misspelled names, repetition within paragraphs, contradictions if "facts" and just poor writing and dreadful editing. The stories are good, but seemingly not enough of them. I was fortunate to meet and lunch with Lou, along with a group of my friends. Lou was incredible, regaling us for over two hours with countless stories - all while writing this very book. He told them better, in more detail and more of them, at our lunch. Lou was a classy, wonderful guy, but this was a tough read. Editing is so very important.
Wonderful stories from a wonderful man, however, poor editing (inaccuracies, misspelled names and dates) keep this from being rated higher. I still enjoyed it overall.
