In Search of Hope: The Global Diaries of Mariane Pearl

Rate this book
Mariane Pearl started traveling the globe for Glamour magazine in 2006 to profile courageous women and show that hope is stronger than fear. During the first year of writing her monthly "Global Diary" column, Pearl logged nearly 100,000 miles and met 12 brave, determined women-true agents of change in their communities-who make the world a more just and harmonious place despite personal hardship, discouraging odds and even death threats. In Search of The Global Diaries of Mariane Pearl introduces readers to these everyday heroes. The limited-edition run of In Search of Hope features more than 200 previously unpublished images from Pearl's travels and updates on the women since they were first profiled in the magazine. Mariane's good friend, Angelina Jolie, who also portrays her in A Mighty Heart, has written a touching and personal tribute to Mariane as the foreword for In Search of Hope.

Among some of the inspirational women readers will meet are Somaly Mam, a former child sex slave in Cambodia who now rescues girls from forced prostitution; Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first woman to be elected head of an African country; Lydia Cacho, the intrepid Mexican reporter who exposes violence against women and children despite repeated threats on her life; Sheila Watt-Cloutier, the Inuit leader and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee working toward the reverse of global warming; and Dr. Julian Atim, a Ugandan AIDS orphan-turned-doctor fighting for health rights in her country.

"The women featured here are all different and their context varies widely, yet you will find the same active principle animating them. This is the ultimate value of hope," says Mariane Pearl. "These women teach us a lot about the power of human empathy and the value of beauty that emanates from them as they progress on this lonely yet magnificent path that will lead them to become a genuine source of hope for all people."

"As anyone who's seen or read A Mighty Heart knows, Mariane is a woman of incredible personal strength," says Cindi Leive, Glamour editor-in-chief. "But as millions of Glamour readers have learned, she's also a fiercely committed journalist. She set out to find women who are changing the world-and the stories she's brought back, collected here for the first time, are the kind of personal profiles that alter your thinking forever."

Mariane Pearl's acclaimed "Global Diary" column for Glamour has been featured in The New York Times and on CNN, and has been recognized as a National Headliner Award winner. Glamour will donate 100 percent of its proceeds and royalties from all books sold on glamour.com to charities selected by the women profiled.

She is a French freelance journalist and a reporter and columnist for Glamour magazine. She is the widow of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in early 2002.

Pearl, being of Dutch-Jewish, Afro-Latino-Cuban and Chinese Cuban ancestry and raised in Paris, Van Neyenhoff met Daniel Pearl while he was on assignment in Paris.

They married in August 1999, lived for a time in Mumbai, India where Daniel was the South Asia bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, and later traveled to Karachi, Pakistan to cover aspects of the war on terrorism. Their son Adam Daniel was born in Paris three months after his father was killed.

Pearl's memoir, A Mighty Heart, which deals with the events surrounding her husband's kidnapping and assassination, was adapted for the film A Mighty Heart. Co-produced by Brad Pitt, Andrew Eaton and Dede Gardner and directed by Michael Winterbottom, the film stars Angelina Jolie and Dan Futterman as Mariane and Daniel Pearl.

Mariane Pearl is a practicing Nichiren Buddhist and a member of Soka Gakkai International.

In July 2007, Pearl filed suit in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York against terrorists and a bank which may have financed them, for their alleged roles in the abduction, torture and murder of her husband. Those named in the suit include Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Habib Bank. On October 24, 2007, the lawsuit seeking damages against al-Qaida, a dozen reputed terrorists and Pakistan's largest bank was dropped. Lawyers for Mariane Pearl noted that Habib Bank Limited and the other defendants in the case had not answered the lawsuit filed in July (although Habib Bank Limited had denied ever supporting terrorism), but they otherwise did not explain their reason for dropping the action. A spokesman for the lawyers has stated that the withdrawal was due to personal reasons and should have no bearing on the merits of the lawsuit.

Pearl is a member of the honorary board of the Daniel Pearl Foundation[http://www.danielpearl.org] with international correspondent Christiane Amanpour, former President Bill Clinton, Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, president of Stanford University John L. Hennessy, founding Nightline anchorman Ted Koppel, Queen Noor of Jordan, Palestinian professor and president of Al-Quds University Sari Nusseibeh, violinist Itzhak Perlman, Nobel Peace Prize winning author Elie Wiesel, Daniel Pearl's parents Ruth and Judea Pearl, and others.

Extremely touching. Bought it not knowing anything about Marianne as a writer, but out of respect for her husband’s memory. The stories of women she shares will stay with me forever. Heroes do exist. I am glad she is not only one of them, but makes it her mission to find, support, and surround herself with people that affirm the best in humanity.

Already known as a respect writer, Mariane Pearl was thrust into the international spotlight when her husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, was murdered by Islamic extremists. Refusing to believe that hate and violence are more powerful than love, Mariane Pearl worked with Glamour Magazine to bring stories of amazing women from amazing corners of the world. What she discovers is nothing short of inspirational, with uplifting and heartwarming accounts of women’s courage, determination, and spirit. Perfect for anyone travelling to a remote or challenging area.

Brief biography/interviews, of twelve women who, like Mariane and her late husband Daniel, work for peace and justice, in the face of terrible odds. As I read, the power of their faith and compassion lifted my heart. The articles are taken from a column Mariane Pearl wrote for Glamour magazine, which donates 100% of its proceeds and royalties from the book to charities selected by the women profiled. Lots of color photos.

I read this book, if gave me another outlook of strength, and hardship in this world. I love what the Madame President of Liberia said, which is like medicine to my heart. " Deeds say more than words, I'm going to set an example...it's the only way to free myself and my country" I love all the women in the book. The women in each country are very courageous and inspiring. Read it for yourself. You won't regret it. Mariane Pearl is awesome too!

Mariane Pearl is a great thinker. She is able to see hope in places where others would despair. Very much focussing on the glass half full, the people working for good in the face of evil, instead of the evil. Very impressive to me that Glamour ran these stories. Don't remember them having articles like that when I was a teen and last read it.

More of a coffee table book than anything, this book features stories of courageous and inspiring women from around the globe. The photos are magnificent, and my only disappointment is that there aren't more books like these!

I read this book because the author was going to be speaking at the Women's Connection dinner in the Quad Cities. I mostly skimmed through the book, a collection of stories of women of strength and/or character.
