ok so like we have to evaluate this through the lens of a young adult book. I am reading this as a chad, 23 year old male that goes to the gym 4-5x a week and its like a 2/5 if we are evaluation it as that/ HOWEVER, i read this book as a teen and let me tell you: it slapped.
the pros: the parallelism to how they were using the class assignment as a tragedy to the real events of the book was sick. I mean, you could see it a mile away but it makes for a really good classroom read, so any teachers: pay attention. The writing is one of the better ones i've read from adult authors trying to write dialogue meant for teens- it's not really cringy or far off from what I imagine I would've said as a kid. I've read books that have teens saying stuff like "yolo" in 2024. dont get me wrong, there are some cringe parts but its not over the top. The structure moves the story along in an interesting way. The dual pov of a character that experiences the main story with us is really cool.
the cons: I wish the romance was more of a focus. The first half of them hanging out in the hotel was gripping. like ??? they just meant and theyre cozying up and hes all nervous: he just like me fr when I fall in love with a stranger on the street or someone I just met at a work event for the first time. Give me more of that! instead, it falls off in the second half like Sword Art Online. Yeah that's really my biggest criticism if I'm gonna be honest
overall: a solid 3.2/5 stars. If this book was a pokemon it would be like a uhhhhhhh pidgeot. pretty basic, does what its meant to do, and under certain circumstances it could be good.
