Summer at Tiffany - A Memoir is an enjoyable recollection of a rare time, a unique time for youth in 1940s America. Written by Marjorie Hart, this book is a lovely recalling of when she and her best friend, Marty Garrett, found jobs at Tiffany & Co., in New York, during the summer of 1945. Both Hart and Garrett were college - age debutantes from Ohio. New York was The Big City, where it felt the whole world was there. Ms. Hart's memoir is a delightful, light read. Filled with the coming of age experiences many women their age were experiencing, like going to Jack Dempsey's speak easy club, meeting the man whom she would eventually marry, seeing actress Marlene Dietrich at Tiffany's and being awed by her presence. One event that stood out for me was her the moment she discovered Japan had surrendered, ending the Second World War. The excitement, relief and unbridled joy of the author, her friends and people upon hearing the news is truly a moment to remember. This is a lovely book, good for any season, fall, winter, spring or summer. Recommended. This book is available in accessible formats from the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) in Canada and Bookshare in the United States.

Marjorie was on summer break and she and her best friend Marty decided to go to New York City for summer jobs. They wanted to work for a nice department store and after some time they were able to find jobs at Tiffany & Co. to which they became the first women to work on the sales floor. They weren't paid much but they worked hard to make their time in New York memorable. They were able to be around very rich and famous people and experienced what life in New York could be like. She met a shipman and they dated when she was in the city and he helped her make unforgettable memories.

A great light read! It’s fun to read about what New York was like in 1945 and the real events that occurred in the city and at Tiffany’s. Loved this book, especially reading it after having just been in New York and still feeling that excitement and wonder for the big city.

This was a wonderful book, set in the 1940s, about a woman from Story City, Iowa who was a student at the University of Iowa. In 1945 she went to NYC with a college friend and got a summer job at Tiffany. Her experiences were so interesting and this book was just a pleasant experience.

Light, fun, story about the author’s time in NY. You can tell she worked hard on writing the book and loved that summer. To recall all of that 60 years later is impressive, plus the time and courage it takes to even write and publish a book.

This was a wonderful, sweet book. It also gives a personal look at the events of 1945 from a young woman’s perspective. What I know of that time comes from a history book. This was so interesting.
