Wake Up America is a guide for those who want to know how years of enlightened policies have managed to create a more angry, more bitter and more intolerant America. To Joel, we were never meant to be insecure, unstable or at odds with ourselves and we were never meant to have a world that keeps us in disdain. Joel feels self-hatred has run amok and it is creating great obstacles for our people to find constructive meaning in their lives. Furthermore, Joel feels this negativity might lead us down a path of complete indifference, and complete servitude as a people if its not put in check. He claims self-hatred is unnatural and it is in fact a direct result of our leaders of culture denying us a right to a positive past. Indeed, for him, we have been tainted. Johnson states several reasons for his view, the forerunner of which is self-denial. It seems to him we are in denial of the fundamentals of human nature. So he puts the facts on the table, compares ideals to their results and compares reality to fantasy. Uncomfortable questions are asked, issues are confronted and positive outlooks are encouraged. Joel truly feels that too much uncontested idealism has undermined who we are as a people and we are too great to let it continue.
