184 pages. Has Index, Bibliography, and Acknowledgement and Credits. Lots of pictures of flora, fauna, topographical features that may be considered visually impressive but also seem quite repetitious. Seven Chapters with text of descriptions of local areas and occasional conversations with local residents. It doesn't seem to offer anything for the general reader, and actual scientists/scholars would presumably prefer more scholarly works. Drawback minimal to no picture captions. Includes sections on prehistoric cave drawings and Earle Stanley Gardner and gray whales.
This book has been in my home library since I subscribed to Time-Life's American Wilderness series. I always enjoyed the photographs by Jay Maisel and now I take the time to read the text. I recommend it for armchair travelers.
