Bernie decides to run away because nobody pays any attention to him, but when he stops to say good-bye to his friends, he discovers that they all love and need him.
I loved this one a kid and so does my son. It feels so familiar, yet it's such a different world then the Midwest, where I grew up. Bernie gets to be useful and appreciated, a great feeling for kids.
This was one of my all-time favorite books as a child. There were many times that this was my first pick when it came time for bedtime stories, and I knew it well enough to know when my parents were trying to skip over pages to read it faster and get me to bed sooner.
Sonia: I love it and I don't hate it. I like the cover. It has the sun coming up and Bernie is looking out the window with his pajamas on. The pictures are nice and cool.
Maddie: I like it and I love it. It's my favorite because the pictures I like and the story. This book there's pretty pictures and they're beautiful, the colors like purple, green, white, red, yellow. It's not Sonia been sticking these stickers on it and I don't know.
Bernie, clearly an Enneagram 2, longed to be useful, and achieved his goal in very creative ways.
I started reading this book over my daughter's shoulder this morning while I combed her hair for school, and finished it aloud to her and her younger brother, sitting on the front porch while the scholars waited for the bus.
