Norma Simon has published more than fifty books for children. Her books
have the special quality of engaging children because they deal with experiences which have rich emotional meaning for them. Her books explore a
wide spectrum of topics ranging from playful accounts of children and pets,
from the pleasures of a rainy day (WET WORLD is her most recent book for
Candlewick) to books which help children deal with death and separation.

Ms. Simon has had a lifetime of experience working with children as a
teacher, parent, and, for more than twenty-eight years, working as a
volunteer with the children in her local elementary school.

Her formal education includes a B.A. from Brooklyn College and,
significantly for her career, an M.S. from Bank Street College of Education.
As a pioneer in "progressive" education for children, the Bank Street
College philosophy of early childhood education continues to influence her
work.

On a personal note, Norma Simon grew up in New York City. Her parents came
from Europe as adults. Her extended family all shared a big brownstone
house in Brooklyn, New York, where she lived until she was six with her
parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

For the past thirty years, Norma and her husband have lived on Cape Cod,
Massachusetts. She enjoys fishing on Cape Cod Bay, clam digging, hunting
for wild mushrooms, gardening, cooking and--when she has time--reading.

While prepping for a two-month stay in Mexico I tried to pick up a little Spanish ahead of time. What better way than with a kid's book? (Probably an intro course at a local college or intensive Rosetta Stone type study.)

If I had a choice, I would've picked a book with a cover that didn't have ghoulish creatures with black-coal soulless eyes staring out of a window at me, but I found What Do I Do? - no doubt a thriftstore or yardsale purchase from a bygone day - on my bookshelves in the language section and needing something simple to start my Spanish lessons with, I went with it.

It wasn't a bad choice after all! I mean, it is rather slim, so I didn't learn a heap-load of new words, but at this point I'm taking baby steps, so Simon's kids' book worked for me.

I learned the words for store, school, to say, to play, and obviously important the phrase "what do I do?". On the other hand I think I wasted a little time memorizing "Joe wants my wagon."

I refreshed my memory on "No mas," the word for milk, money, brother, and the man. Since I didn't find it here, I guess I'll have to Google translate "Step back fool or I'll tear you a new one!"

There is no instruction on pronunciation, inflection, etc, but the fact that the English had its Spanish translation right under it made this most helpful indeed!
