There were a hundred games the children played with the sky. Each question that arose in a child's mind was a game. About the author

Vinod Kumar Shukla (born 1 January 1937) is a modern Hindi writer known for his surreal style that often borders on magic-realism and sometimes move beyond it. His works include the novels Naukar ki Kameez and Deewar Mein Ek Khirkee Rahati Thi (A Window lived in a Wall), which won the Sahitya Akademi Award for the best Hindi work in 1999.

His first collection of poems Lagbhag Jai Hind was published in 1971. Vah Aadmi Chala Gaya Naya Garam Coat Pehankar Vichar Ki Tarah was his second collection of poems, published in 1981 by Sambhavna Prakashan. Naukar Ki Kameez (The Servant's Shirt) was his first novel, brought out in 1979 by the same publisher. Per Par Kamra (Room on the Tree), a collection of short stories, was brought out in 1988, and another collection of poems in 1992, Sab Kuch Hona Bacha Rahega.

Vinod Kumar Shukla was a guest littérateur at the Nirala Srijanpeeth in AGRA from 1994 to 1996 during which he wrote two novels Khilega To Dekhenge and the refreshing Deewar Mein Ek Khirkee Rahati Thi. The latter has been translated into English by Prof. Satti Khanna of Duke University as A Window Lived in a Wall.

I didn't want to DNF this book. It's so beautiful with all the illustrations and black n white. And the blurb. sounded so good and dreamy. But I guess, the translation is the problem. It lacks the feelings and emotions, the element of magic which is so very essential in a book like this is absent, the poetry falls flat and the philosophy is just words and no feelings.

I might read the mother book, maybe that would make sense.

कहने के लिए ये एक किताब थी, और महसूस करने के लिए एक पूरा बचपन। विनोद कुमार शुक्ल का लेख कुछ शब्दों , कुछ पंक्तियो में समेटा नहीं जा सकता , इसे जरूरत है एक पुरे आसमान की, 5 stars नहीं, इससे अंधेरा भागने वाले अनगनित तारों में मापा जा सकता है बस।
Magical realism या जादुई यथार्थवाद एक ऐसा समुंदर है जिसमे जो एक बार गोता खा ले वो बार बार वापस आता ही है। अगर आपने अभी तक विनोद जी को पढ़ा नहीं है तो यकीन मानिए आपके जीवन में कमी है कल्पना की बहुत सुन्दर दुनिया की ♥️

बहुत बहुत बहुत सुंदर! दुनिया इस नज़र से देख सकेंगे हम कभी?! कि जिसमें एक दरवाज़ा हो, अंनत के आगे लगा दरवाज़ा। जो कभी बन्द ना होता हो। जिसके आगे भी अनन्त, पीछे भी और बाजू में भी। जिसमें एक चलते हुए बोलता और बोलते बोलते उड़ता हुआ लड़का हो, स्कूल में छुट्टी के दिन मनाने जाती एक पूरी बस्ती हो, एक नीचे गिरता पूरा नगर हो, गली हो, घर हो और हर दरवाज़े के खुलते ही प्रेम से खाना खिलाने वाले लोग हों। खिड़की के बाहर फ्रेम में टँगे लगातार गिरते पत्थर हों और एक बूढ़ा आदमी हो जो समय में टहलता हो। यह जादू है! जो हमारे आस पास ही है। हो सकता है। इस जादू को दिखाने वाले के भीतर की दुनिया को सलाम। उसकी कलम को सलाम।

शुक्ल जी ने हमेशा की तरह एक अद्भुत फंतासी रची है। पहली नज़र में पात्र और उनके संवाद बिल्कुल बेतुके लग सकते हैं, लेकिन जब हम अपने बचपन को याद करेंगे तो याद आएगा कि हम भी इसी तरह की दुनिया बनते थे अपने मित्रों के साथ। कथानक में सहजता है। कई-कई जगहों पर साधारण भाषा में बहुत गहरी बातें भी कहलवाई हैं पात्रों से, बिल्कुल दादी-नानी की कहानियों की तरह।
एक सुखमय अनुभव हेतु पढ़ने के लिए उपयुक्त।

ये उपन्यास जादुई है। और उतना ही सच। सपना। एक एक वाक्य विनोद कुमार शुक्ल के जीवन की आशा से भरा। सुंदर। इसमें सब है। अनंत काल वाले बूढ़े। एक आदमी जिसके बोलने पर शेर दहाड़ता है। एक लड़का जो बोलेगा तो चलेगा। चुप रहने पर रुका रहेगा। एक लड़का जिसकी अपनी आवाज नहीं है, वो हमेशा दूसरों की आवाज में बोलेगा। अपने की पहचान भी दूसरे की आवाज में देगा। एक घर जिस पर हरी घास है और चंद्रमा उसके बीच से निकलता है। छुट्टी के दिन की पढ़ाई। स्कूल की दीवार में आले जिस में बैठकर सब पढ़ते हैं। चंद्रमा से समुंदर में छलांग। एक बौना पहाड़ जो अनंत तक गहरा है। जिसमें गिरते लोगों ने एक बस्ती बसा ली। और बहुत सारा सुख।

Children's world is full of questions and wonderful fantasies, the author introduced us to the amazing fantasy world of children's. This book was written in Hindi which is now translated by Satti Khanna. Its name in Hindi was 'Hari Ghaas'. The title and cover of the book are unique and interesting. The author has described the beauty of grass to the moon. It Takes one to a completely new, different world. The author has wonderfully described the world and innocence of children. The language used by the author is simple and interesting. The author has described each and every scene very interestingly. one can connect to the story easily from the very start. The characters that the author built are very strong, The plot is very different and unique. The pace of the story is also good. The tempo of the story is full of fun, innocence, and mystery. I loved the sketches that the author has added at the start of every chapter. Not to forget the poems at the end, they are beautiful and worth a read.

Overall it's a good read. If you like reading fiction, go for it.

ttMoonrise from the green grass roof is a novel translated by Satti Khanna which was originally written as Hari Ghaas Ki Chhappar vaali Jhopdi aur Bhauna Pahad by Vinod Kumar Shukla in Hindi literature. Book talks about the beauty of the world in different-different thing that exist in this Universe, from grass to the Moon. Bolu, Bhaira, Poona and many more are the characters of the book. These characters are the important components, through them Author has described his Fantasy and questions related to tue world and how these things are connected. Author has beautifully written all the scenes and the most important thing about the book is that he has amazingly described the innocence of these kids from the novel.

The books is totally amazing. Satti khanna has done a really remarkable job with the translating of the book and has justified the Author, Vinod Kumar Shukla

This book by Vinod Kumar Shukla, is a truly enchanting rare treat for every age, seamlessly taking the reader away from the real world to a magical fantasy land. It's a marvelous adventure that sparks imagination and reminds us that magic is just beyond the veil of reality. A perfect read to share across generations!

“हरी घास की छप्पर वाली झोपड़ी और बौना पहाड़” – बहुत ही रोचक, विचित्र, हँसाती, गुदगुदाती, सोचने पर विवश करती, बेहद ही कमाल किताब है ये! विनोद कुमार शुक्ल ने लेखन के क्षेत्र में एक नई विधा ही खोल दी है! इसमें कहीं कुछ रुकता नहीं, कहीं कुछ छुपता नहीं, कहीं कुछ बचता नहीं। विनोद कुमार शुक्ल जैसे कहानी को घास बना कर उसका एक-एक तिनका चुनते हैं और उसके हर एक रंग का प्रयोग करके नया ही चित्र खींच देते हैं – कल्पना से विचित्र एक सपनीला संसार!

सारी कहानी एक कविता जैसे चलती है, और कविता संगीत की तरह सुनती है, सरल भाषा एक मंद मलय पवन सी बहती है, और एक ताज़गी भरी महक पाठक को दे जाती है। आज के भागते दौड़ते दौर में ये उपन्यास पढ़ना एक माया-लोक में चले जाने जैसा है।

"झूठ तो कुछ देर का होता है। और सच हमेशा का।"

क्या यही सच है जो विनोद जी ने लिखा? काश यही सच हो। कयोंकि इसमें सपने थे। एक के बाद एक सपने। और सपनों की दुनिया बहुत खूबसूरत होती है। किसी चीज़ के कोई मायने नहीं, किसी एक जगह पे लंबे समय तक बंध कर नहीं रहना, एक जगह से पल भर में दुसरी जगह पर, एक अहसास से दुसरे अहसास पर, पल में रोना पल में हँसना। कितनी खूबसूरत दुनिया होती है सपनों की, बच्चों की सी मासूमियत लिए हुए।

कल्पनाशीलता मे�� लिखा हुआ उपन्यास है यह। लेकिन कुछ अलग सी ताज़गी लिए हुए है, कयोंकि इसमें कविता और कहानी का अन्तर नहीं है। गद्य और पद्य की सीमा रेखा को मिटा द��या विनोद जी ने। किसी का चले बिना बोल न पाना और बोले बिना चल न पाना, किसी का प्रतिदिन भूतकाल से वर्तमान और वहां से भविष्यकाल तक टहल कर आना, कक्षा में आलों पर बैठना और खूँटे को पकड़ कर यहां से वहां जाना, और सबसे बढ़िया था छुट्टी के दिन की पढ़ाई। क्या खूब कल्पना है।

उपन्यास पढ़ कर ऐसा लगा जैसे बचपन में पहुँच गए हों, जहां पर हर रात दादी की कहानियां कल्पना की उड़ान पर ले जाकर सूलातीं थीं और फिर सपनों में भी वैसी ही कुछ कल्पना की दुनिया में घूमते रहते थे। बचपन की उन सपनों से भरी रातों में लाकर छोड़ दिया विनोद जी ने।

यह मेरा विनोद जी का लिखा पढ़ने का पहला अनुभव है। बहुत हैरानी हुई और बहुत अफसोस भी हुआ कि पहले कभी इनके बारे में सुना क्यो नहीं था। इनकी किताबों से परिचित होने का सौभाग्य मानव कौल जी की पुस्तक 'तुम्हारे बारे में' से प्राप्त हुआ। चलिए, देर आए दुरुस्त आए। अब तो यह यात्रा लंबी चलेगी।

मेरे बचपन में शायद मेरी दादी मां और नानी ने खूब कहानियां सुनाई होंगी, बाकी सभी की तरह मेरा बचपन भी रोचक और मिस्टरीज से भरा हुआ गुजरा होगा। लेकिन मुझे वह सब नही याद। कई दफा याद करने की कोशिश भी की, याद नही आया।
बचपन के शुरुवाती साल मेरे गांव में बीते, लेकिन वह समय बहुत कम रहा। मैं आज जब शहर में रहता हूं और अलग अलग तरह की चिड़या या पेड़ों को देखता हूं तो उनके नाम नही मालूम होते। मेरे इर्द गिर्द के लोगों से पता करने पर जानकारी मिलती है कि यह फलाना फलाना पेड़ और चिड़िया है। उस वक्त लगता है गांव में ज्यादा समय बीता होता तो मुझे भी यह सब अपनी भाषा में मालूम होता। निराशा सी महसूस होती है।
इतने साल बीतने के बाद आज इन सभी यादों की और तरह तरह के चिड़ियों और पेड़ों के नामों को जान लेने की जिज्ञासा को मेरे लिए विनोद कुमार शुक्ल की किताबों ने, उनके लेखन ने पूर्ण रूप से शांत कर दिया है। चाहे फिर वह पत्रंगी हो, कोतावाल, शौबाजी, किलकिला, दैयार, गौरैया और ना जाने कितने ही नाम।
मेरा यह कहना बिल्कुल गलत नही होगा कि मेरी दादी मां और नानी की जगह विनोद कुमार शुक्ल जी ने भर दी।
और कितना सुंदर है यह महसूस करना कि किसी आदमी ने या उसके लेखन ने एक औरत की जगह को भरा है। यह होना भी अपने आप में अद्भुत है।

ट्रेन में यह किताब पढ़ते समय एक 9 साल की बच्ची मेरे बगल में बैठ गई और किताब में दिलचस्पी लेने लगी। तब मैंने शुरुआत से उसके साथ 30-35 पन्ने पढ़े। उसका सुख और जो भी उसे इन शब्दों से मिल रहा था, उसने एहसास दिलाया कि मैं अपनी एडल्ट और दुनियादारी से सराबोर नज़र में क्या मिस कर रहा हूं। ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा बच्चों को यह सुख मिलते रहे यही दुआ है। और किताब के बारे में तो क्या ही कहा जा सकता है।

"वे सबकी आवाज सुनने के हकदार थे। यह हक मनुष्य से प्रेम करने से मिलता था।"

यों तो किताब की हर पंक्ति इतनी अद्भुत है कि पर्दों पर लिख के दीवारों से टांगी जाए, लेकिन पूरे उपन्यास का जो तजुरबा है, शायद ही कहीं किसी और तरीके से मिलता होगा। अपने आप को अनपढ़, भ्रष्ट पाता हूं विनोद जी की सरलता के आगे। एक अजब सी प्रेरणा मिली है इस जादुई दुनिया से गुज़र के।

‘हरी घास की छप्पर वाली झोपड़ी’ एक ऐसी दुनिया रचती है जहाँ गरीबी, अभाव और सीमित संसाधनों के बीच भी मनुष्य का मन अपनी कोमलता नहीं खोता। झोपड़ी यहाँ केवल रहने की जगह नहीं, बल्कि आत्मसम्मान, सादगी और जीवन से जुड़ाव का प्रतीक बन जाती है। लेखक बिना किसी नाटकीयता के, बहुत शांत ढंग से यह दिखाते हैं कि कम में भी पूरा जीवन जिया जा सकता है। भाषा इतनी सरल है कि वह पाठक के मन में सीधे उतर जाती है और देर तक ठहर जाती है।

Have you met Bolu, a six year old boy who speaks only when he walks, Bhaira, a normal boy who prefer communicating through sign language over speaking, Chhotu, who has the habit of speaking in voice of others and their friends. You can meet them all and many others in Moonrise from the Green Grass Roof a lovely novel written by famous poet and novelist Vinod Kumar Shukla. Originally written in Hindi titled ‘Haari Ghaas Ki Chhappar Vaali Jhopdi Aur Bauna Pahad’ translated by Satti Khanna.

The author has introduced us to the quintessential world of amazing children where many eccentric situations are possible. In this world the patrangi birds talks only during their flight, khanjan birds can vanish anything, moon rise and set from green grass roof, kittens comes out from textbooks and goes back on its own,writing sticks move from one schoolbag to other and many such outlandish things.

The language used is simple and character development is great. He has used poetry and the quirky innocent questions of children at places which increases the curiosity quotient of the reader.The illustrations at the start of chapter makes the read more interesting. I visited the fantasy world of a very Old man, Bajrang Maharaj, Koona and many others through the lively description of the author and saw the things through their eyes.Children would love this book.

The essence of poetry seem to be lost at few places during translation which prods me to read the original work. I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to everyone who want to revisit their childhood and enjoy the joy of simple things.

Didn't enjoy as much I thought I would. Might have been better if I had read the original hindi version.

It falls flat and makes no sense🙄
