This is a Sara Craven that pulls its punches, that follows a predictable MOC plot, and contains characters I will forget tomorrow. So why three stars?

It'a an HP comfort read. We only have the heroine's point of view as she is treated as Cinderella by her family, sees her "unofficial" fiance run off with her step sister, and agrees to a marriage of convenience with the rakish hero for her father's company's sake. The heroine is treated to lovely meals out, a whole new wardrobe, a service flat in London, and a hero who keeps trying to get her into bed.

But our virgin heroine is holding out for love.

She misunderstands when she sees him with the OW. He misunderstands when he sees her ex fiance (who does some great whiny groveling and she is having none of it) leaving their flat. Poor hero is so beside himself with longing that he leaves the heroine on their wedding night because he didn't trust himself. (Oh, stupid, stupid hero - I could almost feel SC quivering over her keyboard, resisting the urge to write a forced seduction scene).

Of course the H/h finally realize they both feel the same way after a night of love and one final misunderstanding that leaves the hero a broken man (for all of ten minutes).

All of the twists and turns are about as shocking as warm bath. But warm baths are pleasant and help you relax - so read this one when your nerves need a bit of HP soothing.

Heroine's fiance cheated on her with her sister. In order to save face she accepts hero's marriage proposal. Alex is a successful city banker but when his grandmother gives him an ultimatum to marry within three months or lose his inheritance, he's forced to find a bride. Louise seems the ideal candidate until she falls in love with him.

Sweet love story with loving characters. I wish the author had written an epilogue.

The first third of the book was the best part. Louise's loyalty towards her family seemed commendable even though it made her a good candidate for Doormat of the Year. I loved Alex's sardonic humor and his sparkling banter with Louise! The blurb didn't lie about that. I even laughed out loud a few times.

A little disappointing, though, was how the story lost some of its wit and sexual tension after Alex and Louise returned to London from her country home. Alex became very remote, so much so that it was hard to tell if he was even attracted to Louise! I believe Alex was trying to protect his heart, but I wished the author had given more clues into his feelings for Louise and had him spend more time with her, which would have validated his declaration of love. I also thought Louise's family didn't get their just deserts for treating her so shabbily. Guess I'm just too bloodthirsty. But Louise didn't care, she was too busy relishing her happy ending.

An enjoyable Cinderella fairytale!

Absolutely wonderful. Flawless. Did not feel bored or as if the author’s interest lagged anywhere.

The Hero falls for her at the beginning.

Truly wonderful hero. He takes care of her. Wipes her face when she throws up. Realises she hasn’t eaten anything and gets hot chocolate and cookies for her.

Made me fall in love with him!

Loved the way he jokes and flirts with the heroine throughout.

Their characters are built beautifully and not once does the author slip. Some books .. one never gets a sense of the characters or they do uncharacteristic things not at all in keeping with how they are built up.

In this one, one can see them. Literally.

The dialogues were amazing too. The hero is always joking yet one knows he’s fallen hard for her.

Only one flaw.

I just can’t get my head around how he gives up the house in the end. Why?? Why??? It was a beautiful house. She loved it too. And then he gives it up.

That spoilt the book for me a bit. It’s like you wait for a pizza .. it’s being made .. it’s being made..

Finally!! You get it. Oh no. It’s a diet version.

The hero’s grandmother. What a bitch though. To force her grandson to get married within three months on threat of disinheriting him from something he loves with all his emotions.

Like the old woman is giving something away … yet she is continuing to decide how it will be used after her death. There will be a wife and children peopling the house’s corridors. Why? Because she says so.

The sister and the other man. Ugh. Horrible. The wicked step mother. So perfectly drawn. The girl’s father. You instantly hate him. What a beastly man. To abandon his own daughter and set up a family with the other woman and their child and then to allow his wife to use step daughter like a servant.

It’s a nice old fashioned story. Perhaps people today won’t identify with the emotions.

They love cardboard cut out characters skimming over the surface pretending fake emotions are real emotions.

Ugh. Can’t read a single book by any of the new lot. They’re like factory products .

Whereas earlier authors were the real thing.

The book had three segments. The family drama at the start where Cinderella heroine, Louise, -- a mouthy Cinderella thank goodness even if submissive work-wise-- is planning a romantic weekend with her Prince Charming fiance, David, when she's coerced into cooking by step-mother for wealthy banker Alex Fabian, who's visiting their country home, hoping that he puts a ring on her only darling daughter Ellie's finger. Alex, whose beloved grandmother is upset with his playboy ways, more particularly, his current affair being with another man's wife --which didn't sit well with me either-- has issued ultimate that if he wants the house he's loved from childhood, he had three months to produce a wife. Seeing that Ellie's father needed refinancing for his publication, he agrees to the funding if Ellie married him. The weight of the ring seem too much to bear for fragile Ellie --she was actually scared by Alex's formidability-- for she elopes the following day, that too, with her step-sister's fiance. Shocked by the double betrayal, and with Alex's threat of pulling away from the refinancing deal, Louise ends up agreeing to marry to him. Liked the banter between the two.

Second segment, is about Alex taking Louise to live in her penthouse and seeing that she's not comfortable with him being around her ---"I’m beginning to find the role of potential rapist a little wearing. I wonder what they did with the stones from the Berlin Wall. I could find a use for them"--- leaves her in the hands of his P.A to prepare/shop for the wedding and gran's birthday party soon after, and gives her the distance she wants. This segment I found somewhat boring except for Alex's wry humour that had me laughing at times.
‘Who-who is it?’ she called, her voice strangled.
‘Who do you think?’ He sounded irritable rather than amorous, she noted thankfully. ‘There’s hardly a cast of thousands out here. May I come in?’
‘I’m in bed.’ It was a feeble protest and she knew it.
‘Really-in a bedroom?’ His tone was caustic. ‘How bizarre. This I must see.’

Things perk up at the third segment which is all about marital life. On her wedding Louise finds she's in love with her husband and is suddenly not liking the fact that husband dearest is adhering to her demands of leaving her to her own devices and not making the wedding day special for her. Moreover, he doesn't come home on the wedding night --he wasn't sure he wouldn't keep himself from having his wedding night-- she thinks he was with another woman. They argue. She tosses coffee at him.
"You don’t touch me when we’re alone, remember?’ she said hoarsely. ‘Not now, or ever. And in public only when strictly necessary. That’s the deal, Alex, and if you break it I will go. I swear it.’ She drew a swift, uneven breath, wanting to hurt him in turn. ‘Don’t you understand? You make me feel-contaminated.'
He was very pale suddenly, his mouth taut. ‘And, of course, we can’t havethat, my little plaster saint.’ There was icy bitterness in his voice. ‘I just hope you won’t get too lonely up there on your self-righteous pedestal.’
She gasped, anger surging up inside her, overwhelming the pain, the bewilderment, and the aching, desperate need. Before she could think, her hand swung back, and the remains of her coffee were sent showering over him.

However, just when they manage a truce, she sees him with his married lover and he sees her ex-fiance leaving their apartment building after visiting her. Moreover, at the apartment Alex finds her showering soon after her ex left. Both accuse each other of being jealous. At gran's place they find they have to share a bed and find her desire of one another escalating. By the end of the birthday party, they can't help succumb to that passion and spend a blissful night of lovemaking and clearing the air about their exes. My fav was Louise worshiping a sleeping Alex's body with her lips, only he'd been quietly observing her from under half-closed lids and enjoying her ministration. Sadly, the next morning Louise's bubble bursts over a misunderstanding, making her lash out at Alex. He asks her to choose between the deal and marriage. Angry and hurt, she chooses the deal. Only after grandma reveals the truth, Louise realizes her mistake. I felt the end was too rushed. Moreover, there was no epilogue in the end. But, I liked the sexual tension and angst between the pair in the third segment. I liked Alex and Louise.

It was a nice read, not too great though.

Very sweet story may be spoilers below

I liked this very much. The heroine 's fiancee runs off with her half sister and the sisters fiancee asks the h to marry him. Business only of course but you know the H is totally in love with the h. There is a weird wedding night disappearance that I didn't quite understand. The H takes off and doesn't come back until the next morning. He makes the h think he went to another woman but I don't think he did, and he never explained. But he totally loved the h and her family treated her terrible. He saw that right away and he wanted to save her. I really liked the story and I will probably read it again.

This book starts with the hero going to marry her half sister. It was crazy how she was in love with another guy one minute then in love with the hero the next. Also they get married and he just leaves her??? I mean the whole night. Then he is gone the whole time almost and she loves him!? What he was nice to her when her whole world broke apart when sister dearest ran off with her man!!! Then the ex has the nerve to come back to her and say it was all a mistake! Please! I enjoyed it and I will read it again.

Louise became Alex's substitute bride when her sister, his fiancée, ran off with Louise's fiancé.

Alex made a deal that Louise would help him secure his childhood home from his grandmother and he would pay her enough money to secure her for life.

Things never turn out as planned and Louise soon found herself falling for Alex.

While a typical HP romance, I loved the characters. Alex is the typical arrogant Alpha male and Louise is the smart mouthed female who challenges him at every turn. Their constant sniping at each other makes for a fun read.

Sara Craven novels always remind me why communication between people is so important. I don’t understand why her male characters only divulge their feelings when the woman is walking out of their lives. I guess she felt there aren’t any other ways of writing a story.
This book had what so many of her earlier books didn’t- the couple actually spending time together. Alex was a fun conversationalist so points for clever repartee.
Points off for virgin shaming. I’ll never understand why authors think it’s ok for male characters to mock female characters for waiting for a man who will respect them before they give that man the privilege (yes, it’s a privilege) of seeing their bodies. How does Alex get off calling Louisa “icy” and “unfeeling” because she hasn’t slept with every man who propositioned her? How is he more “feeling” for not caring about the legions of women he slept with, let alone their husbands? Also, bedroom recreation doesn’t make you suddenly come alive or understand way more about the world. This book almost reads like it was written in the 60s/70s. I wouldn’t have known the time period if there hadn’t been the single mention of a cellphone.
I do love the absolute snobbery Craven tends to show whenever she discusses food. As if majority of people eat French cuisine on the daily.

3.5 stars.

This book deserves an extra star for the hero's young and pretty PA, who is neither the heroine nor the evil OW. Andie is a sweet lady who is competent at her job and uber helpful to the heroine. The heroine even bemoans the fact that she'll lose her friendship with Andie when the marriage of convenience ends.

The book starts well, and the protagonists have an interesting meet-cute when the hero arrives for dinner at the heroine's home to propose to her stepsister. The next morning, they find that the heroine's fiancé has eloped with her stepsister, who has just become engaged to the hero. The hero is not cut up about it because it was just a deal for him to fulfill his grandmother's condition for inheriting a beloved home. The heroine is devastated, though, because she believed herself in love and had planned out an entire future. There is a nice scene when the heroine's parents are busy with recriminations as she's falling apart, and the hero firmly takes charge of the situation to protect her.

The heroine prepares to leave the village where everyone knows everyone's business to avoid humiliation. The hero makes her get in his car with him. He offers her a marriage of convenience and adds a little bit of blackmail to make her agree.

They get married, the chemistry turns somewhat tepid, and the story meanders on to the HEA.

They’re not very passionate to each other. He is being nice to her and she is being cold to him. I like the H to be smitten, but he is probably too relaxed, too laidback.

The H is a nice guy. She is a virgin and he waits patiently until almost the end of the book to get some.

She cries a lot and she is a trembling, nervous wreck who jumps to the ceiling every time he even dares to make any suggestion of taking their relationship to another level.

I loved the dialogue, especially in the early chapters. Very witty. And Alex, despite being a banker and a slut, was a very attractive H. Every time I read Sara Craven I just feel blown away by her command of pace and language. This was no exception. A very enjoyable read.

Interesting plot. I think it could have done with a little more fun, but overally pretty solid and with a hero who isn't overbearing.

The first half was not very convincing for me. It was too rushed - not the "getting engaged-for convenience-sake to a hot, sexy guy one day after your fiancee leave you" part, but the fact that the heroine got over her fiance THAT fast. I mean, I know she never really loved her a-hole fiancee but they'd been together for...I don't know, almost their whole life to that point? Surely she felt something.

However, the second half is very satisfying as far as misunderstanding and unresolved sexual tension go. Hands up to Sara Craven, the queen of USTs! Therefore, it's a 3.5 star.

Original: Quite good MOC. The two talk more than usual and are more honest with each other about everything except how they feel about the other.
