The Hat Shop on the Corner

Rate this book
Hats! Hats! Hats! Upbrims, sidesweeps, silks, ribbons and trims all become part of Ellie's life when she inherits the little hat shop on Dublin's South Anne Street. But the city is changing and Ellie must decide if she wants to follow the hat-making tradition of her mother or accept a generous offer to sell the shop.

Encouraged by her friends, Ellie takes on the hat shop and her quirky designs and tempting millinery confections soon attract a rich assortment of customers all in search of the perfect hat. Creating hats for weddings, shows, fashion and fun, and falling for the charms of Rory Doyle along the way, Ellie is happier than she has ever been before. But as her fingers work their magic she discovers a lot can happen in the heart of a city like Dublin...

Ellie inherits a hat shop on the corner of South Anne Street in Dublin. After some thought, she decides that she will take on the running of the shop and continue in her mothers’ footsteps. Using her own experience and knowledge to create millinery masterpieces fit for any occasion.

This is a lovely story to listen to and the narrator Caroline Lennon has the perfect tone to her voice to make the story come alive.

This is obviously a story about hats, the making of them, the different materials used and all manner of other things. The author has the balance of the millinery world just right. Giving enough information to keep my interest without overburdening me. It compliments the story of Ellie and her customers. There are also other different things going on this this story. The street where the hat shop is situated is underthreat, not just Ellie’s shop, but also other retailers, from a large development.

I am going to go back to the hats again, well the customers actually. Each customer that comes into the shop wants a bespoke hat. This involves Ellie finding out what the occasion is and then also a little bit about each customer. This means I got to know more characters and their own stories, some are sad, some happy, some nervous, some shy but all want a hat. I got to know their likes, dislike and preferences. Whether they were willing to take a chance on something they wouldn’t normally pick or knew exactly what they wanted.

This was such a lovely story to sit and listen to. It’s one I would recommend to those that like a gentle, heartwarming story about people in their everyday lives. It has also left me wanting to now go and read the book as well.

Predictable, old-fashioned and riddled with cliches, yet this gentle mix of millinery and romance is a real tonic.

After I had read the first pages in the book my expectations on it was kind of low. I simply thought that this was another author, trying to be the new Marian Keyes, but who had simply failed. However, the book became better and I was swept away by all the hats and decorations.

Conlon-McKenna is certainly not a new Marian Keyes but she is not far off. This is a feel good-novel to read if you just want to relax for a moment and just want something enjoyable to read.

This is another book I bought while in Dublin in June 2007. I wanted something that would remind me of walking around the streets of Dublin. This book is cute and light. Good summer reading (definitely a beach read.) I really enjoyed recognizing some of the names and places woven into the story. I enjoyed the book.

Marita has that gift that many Irish writers have of drawing you into a world with a tale and leaving you wanting more and sorry to have left it.

3.5

I enjoyed the parts about the hat shop and it's customers but as for the two love intetests of the main character it felt a little unconvincing for me and major red flags.

Ended too soon! I wanted another chapter!

Lovely read, very fun and light. And I love hats, so the theme was great, too. I very much recommend it. Still wish it had one more chapter, though.

Lovely in so many ways.

Loved the setting and wish I were a passerby on the primary Dublin street featured in this story. So very glad I stumbled onto this author and this book! It was a fine way for me to get immersed in the lives of others overseas.

Fun story

A fun read getting to know a variety of characters through their need for a hat made just for a special occasion. Ellie makes beautiful hats that are perfect for each client. Her love life starts out shaky, but she gets it right in the end, just like her hats!

Simple, quick read.

This was a quick read. Nothing bad happens to anyone, and everyone has a happy ending. I did like that the chapters separated from the main character, Ellie. There wasn't much of a story with just Ellie, but I thought these other storylines were interesting enough to keep me moving through the pages.

Picked this up at a charity shop in Ireland 🇮🇪 while I was there on vacation in 2018 and its been on my to be read pile ever sense. The story revolving around the hat shop was very good, but the main romance didn't make alot of sense. I did not root for the "hero" he kind of seemed like a jerk and that Ellie could do much better. Also Shay sucks and I hope Constance lives happily ever after with some art historian in Cyprus.

quite an entertaining book for me, since it describes the kinds of hat/headpiece Ellie (the main character) creates.
however it's pretty guessable already from the first few chapters, how the ending would be, and when i finally got to the ending, i couldn't help cringe at the cheesiness of it :p
however, it was all in all a pretty okay book, so 3 stars for that! :)

I was surprised that this was so pleasant. So long as you are content with a life where only good things and people abound, with a few disappointments - mainly on the romance front.

Good story telling- not in the least tedious. Enjoyed it

Excessive and random use of exclamation marks... But, good story. A huge cast of characters was well-managed so you didn't lose track of who was who. More of a 'chronicles' type book - little stories all woven together with the milliner at the center.

Sweet, a bit predictable. I did like how the author wove in the side stories that were related to the story without being part of the main thread. A bit unusual to spend several chapters on a character and story thread that never reappears, but it worked.

Not that great, but I love Dublin and since the book is set there and the author is Irish, it definitely reminded me of one of my favorite cities. Very similar to the film You've Got Mail...
