"AAARGH I can't do it!"
Do your children or students get angry when something doesn't go their way? Or when they are trying something new? Do they lose confidence and give up? Anger is a natural emotion. Can children learn to recognize the signs when they are feeling angry? Not only can they learn to recognize their own feelings, but they can also use the strategy of "I Can Check My Senses" to get past the anger and move forward in a positive way. How does Carnuli help Nyx get past the anger when struggling to learn the game of Wabble?
"I Can Check My Senses", like every book in the Power of Thought Series, begins with a conflict that every child can relate to and teaches an evidence-based strategy that adults can model for everyday use. Children will learn, in a fun way, how to problem-solve and find positive solutions to everyday situations.
The Power of Thought children's book series has been developed alongside clinicians, educators and parents to use as a proactive resource in teaching children emotional literacy. I'm obviously biased, but my 6-year-old daughter, Blake, is basically the perfect child. We really lucked out with her.

That being said, she does have the occasional episode where she's overcome by her emotions. I'm sure we're far from alone in dealing with this kind of thing. Blake loves when we read books to her, so when I heard about "I Can Check My Senses," it felt like it was meant to be.

The brightly illustrated book takes place on another planet. One creature, Carnuli, is teaching another, Lazu, how to play a game, but Lazu soon becomes overcome by anger and jealousy. Carnuli then teaches him how to check his senses, which she says helps her out when she gets angry.

It's simple: Take a few deep breaths, then utilize each of your senses to calm you down — for example, find four things around you that you can smell, and three things you can hear. We've tried it a few times with Blake, and it's been a huge help.

Blake loves this book. She's asked me to read it to her numerous times. Here's her review:

"It is great. I think that every time I get angry I think I will do it. I liked that the two creatures were together. It's so sweet. And I really loved the diamonds because I love blue just like Nana."

This is a fanatic book for both children and adults alike. As a step mum of a daughter who has autism, it is especially hard to communicate feelings properly.

I also think it’s brilliant that through the book ‘distraction techniques’ are used. From the very first page is asks the children what they are angry about and what their aura may look like.

This book will make children more ware of their own feelings, emotional and well-being and help to bring it back to a level that they understand and can control.

It then has a series of distraction techniques in my opinion / can you write down your senses which is forcing the child / children to focus their mood and mind elsewhere, and become more aware of their surroundings.

This really is a genuinely excellent book, and in my opinion should be on the bookshelf at every primary school, secondary and home!

It is particularly helpful in helping children to understand their moods, and their ‘auras’ and give them, and the adult reading along with them the chance for an open dialogue about around feelings and emotions, which are so, so important in this day of age. and of the age of the ever influencing social media.

This book could and will help so many adults who stifle a little giving a presentation; to the kids who aren’t or won’t verbalise their frustrations- which must be so hard for themselves.

This book will break the mould for communication and add yet another layer.

Absolutely fanatic, 5/5 Ms McLaughlin.

Good step by step instructions for both parent and child to follow in breaking down what causes a temper tantrum and how to deal with it. Importantly, it requires both child *and* parent and probably should be used each time a meltdown occurs. Additionally, if coloring is supposed to sooth adults (just look at all the apps purporting such), then why would it not do the same for a child?!

I smile a bit when imagining the possibility of sitting and having an exchange with my grandparents, discussing how I was feeling. Their response my be, "Well, that's nice, but we don't have time for that. We have things to do." Members of my generation might have similar reaction - "You don't talk about your feelings. You just FEEL them." I can recall a conversation in a movie between two recently divorced men - "We never talk about how we feel." "Do you want to talk about that?" "No!"
Having experienced this aversion to discussing and examining emotion, it seems to me to be a new, and surprisingly productive, use of time to examine feelings. I've certainly encountered many children who claim to enjoy the time spent talking about their anger or happiness.

In I Can Check My Senses, Lynn McLaughlin has created a fully illustrated book designed for children which has the goal of helping young people to examine their senses and talk about their feelings. A character named Lazu, from the planet Tezra, is taught that colors reveal senses, and that deep breathing, as well as thinking about things seen, smelled, heard, felt and tasted can lower stress and diminish anger. It's a cute book, the illustrations are beautiful, and the admonition is simple and straightforward.

I received a copy of this for free, to review for Booktasters.

This was another very fun and educational book from the Power of Thought series. This time, the theme in the story was senses. This was another fun story, with fun characters and fun, colourful illustrations. It creates a kind of game to play which involves exploring the senses - sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste. I think this is something that children would find entertaining.

Thank you to Booktasters and the author for a free copy to review.

This is the second book of this series that I have read, and I would have given it six stars if I could have, simply because it would have been so useful for me when I first started teaching. So many children have anger issues these days, for many different reasons. This easy to read book is a way to show them that there are ways to control that emotion. It recognizes their feelings of anger, and then channels it in other ways. As an adult, we often forget that this was a lesson we had to learn over time, but how awesome would it have been to have learned this at an earlier age? Recommend it to parents, to read BEFORE anger issues arise and get out of control, or become a habit. Also, for teachers, to help with their students who did not have the support from home., or perhaps the parents simply did not know this themselves. Anger is such an issue right now in our world, perhaps everyone should read it!
