Il giovane avvocato Libotz è l’ultimo arrivato in una cittadina svedese sperduta tra le montagne, un tempo famosa per le sue terme e ora divenuta un luogo spettrale. Timido e impacciato, Libotz apre il suo studio con tanto di targa scintillante, confidando che presto avrà numerosi clienti e forse potrà persino convolare a nozze con una giovane del posto. Ma la comunità gli è ostile e il forestiero, portato per natura ad accollarsi colpe non sue e a farsi schiacciare dal senso del dovere, sembra destinato a incarnare perfettamente il ruolo della vittima sacrificale, che infatti gli abitanti non tardano ad assegnargli. Accanto a lui, una galleria di personaggi mutevoli e sfuggenti ma riconoscibilissimi, come in una commedia umana di balzachiana un oste che vive di ricordi e illusioni, un ambiguo commissario, uno scrivano disonesto, un padre arcigno votato al piagnisteo. Scritto nel 1906, Il capro espiatorio è l’ultimo romanzo di August una potente indagine sulla natura umana e sull’inafferrabilità dell’esistenza, che lo sguardo maturo dell’autore può finalmente contemplare con ironia e senza più amarezza.

Johan August Strindberg painted. He alongside Henrik Ibsen, Søren Kierkegaard, Selma Lagerlöf, Hans Christian Andersen, and Snorri Sturluson arguably most influenced of all famous Scandinavian authors. People know this father of modern theatre. His work falls into major literary movements of naturalism and expressionism. People widely read him internationally to this day.

Eerste lezing 2019: 4/5

Tweede lezing 2023:
Advocaat Libotz vestigt zich in een bergdorpje en wordt er al gauw scheef bekeken. Roddels, pesterijen, intriges, ... Het motiveert hem uiteindelijk om weer te vertrekken en nieuwe oorden op te zoeken. Net zoals "Aan open zee" leest dit als een verhaal geschreven om wraak te nemen op een gemeenschap die hem ooit echt als zondebok beschouwde en weggejaagd heeft. Geen echte hoogvlieger in zijn oeuvre maar toch aan te raden voor fans. Zeer weinig misogynie trouwens, wat ook een verademing is bij zo'n auteur. 3.9/5

"Maar je zag er zo anders uit dan alle anderen, je naam was een bron van ergernis: de naam Libotz is lastig uit te spreken; je had beter Lobitz kunnen heten; daarbij denken mensen misschien aan een spoorwegstation of aan een mijn. Overigens kan ik je zeggen dat de mensen zelf niet weten waarom ze liefhebben of haten."

A short novel by August Strindberg. Better paced than even his plays and none of the misogynistic rants you find in his other novels.

Può un uomo rimanere buono, puro ed altruista in un mondo di personaggi meschini e malvagi? È questo l'interrogativo che ci si pone leggendo questo bellissimo romanzo breve, dove assistiamo alla straniante e a tratti surreale lotta per la sopravvivenza di un avvocato che cerca con tutte le sue forze di farsi accettare in un paesino sperduto della Svezia profonda. Non ci riesce, tutti lo odiano (pesino il padre ed il fratello), cercano di imbrogliarlo. Potrebbe rispondere agli attacchi con la stessa moneta, porsi allo stesso livello dei suoi detrattori. Ma lui non viene mai a compromessi, non rinuncia alla sua dignità, ai suoi principi. Nella parte finale ci viene suggerita la chiave, che ha un risvolto sorprendentemente religioso: è il capro espiatorio, la vittima sacrificale di tutte le miserie umane: il suo destino è accettare il male altrui per contribuire al bene universale. Lettura illuminante, magnifico romanzo.

This was the first thing I've read of his, I don't know if it was the translation but does he not believe in chapters or sometimes paragraphs? This is really short but it was a chore to read.
