Charlie Beckwith the founder of Delta Force goes into exhaustive detail about how the special ops unit came into existence. He told stories of his time in Vietnam, his time with the British SAS (which gave him the idea for delta), and how he had to battle for years before it ever came to fruition. After it was finally commissioned on its first and most important mission (hostage crises in the Middle East), it almost fell apart before getting off the ground. Thankfully that led to delta not being required to use people from various branches of the military and form an autonomous unit. This book was much longer than it needed to be but was still interesting to hear about how this came to be. Also very thankful for the work they do in rescuing people and protecting our country.
A friend recommended this book, and I found it an interesting read. The first part of the book was a bit random, and I was wondering when he would get around to the creation of Delta Force. He also comes across as pretty cocky, which might just come with the territory, but I tend to shy away from people who come across that way. Aside from those two issues, the book was a good read. It kept my interest and didn't take me too long to finish it.
I knew some of the delta team over the years. They always impressed me. What was interesting about this book is how poorly missions were planned. Iran being the first example and the second being the invasion of Grenada. It seemed they had zero intelligence and zero recon time. Anyway, I cool read about awesome operators
