Meet Katy -- a feisty ballerina-in-the-making who loves to twirl like a leaf, stretch like a flower, and float like a swan. She's all dance, all the time -- until she faces the fear of dancing in front of everyone in her new ballet class at Mr. Tutu's School of Dance! Suddenly the once-bold Katy is overcome with a bad case of stage fright! What's a duck to do?
Kids will relate to this fun, charming story about the shyness that can grip all of us at times...and our inner star that refuses to be denied!
Alyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.
This is a cute book that my almost 2 year old picked out at the library. I think the repetition is really good but when it came down to it I was unsure as to the purpose. The back of the book says it is a tale about shyness (Katy is shy at dance class) but I didn't feel that it was obvious. I will still read it to my toddlers a few more times before we need to return it but I don't think I would check it out again.
I first read this book after looking for some ballet books for my daughter! She loved watching the little ballerinas go into thier class next to her gym class. She loved this book and twirled and moved!
Catherine likes this book a lot. It was a good launching point for a shyness/nervousness discussion for my shy little girl. Now: "Sometimes I shy like Katy Duck."
Katy loves to dance and twirl. Her mother notices that, and enrolls her in dance class. Katy is scared. The teacher has her dance as a butterfly, and she loves it.
